Article Text: Houston, Tex., Jan. 1.--To-night between 9 and 10 o'clock Mrs W. C. HAWKINS was found dead in bed in her room on the second floor of a tenement house No. 64 Preston street. Her husband is a hard-working man, but owing to the fact that his wife was addicted to opiates and was so often under the influence of such, he had to quit living with her, though he supplied her proper wants. His three sons, the eldest perhaps 12 years old, occupied the same room. This evening she was down town before 7 o'clock and returned home about 8. More than an hour later the children who had been playing on the street went up to go to bed and found their mother lying dead, just as though she was asleep. They were overcome with grief from the shock and soon their cries aroused some Mexicans who occupied the lower floor and who with others living near went up to ascertain the cause of the trouble. The deceased is probably about 45 years old. About two months ago she jumped in the bayou and attempted to drown herself, but was rescued. A coroner will hold the inquest during the night. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com

Article Text: Marshall, Tex., Oct. 3.--Just before dark last night Major John W. BURCH, an old citizen, told several parties that he intended to commit suicide as all preliminary arrangements had been made. He gave domestic troubles as the cause. As he was somewhat under the influence of intoxicants no one took any notice of what he said, but attempt he did by the morphine route. A physician was called in who relieved the major of death. When he called for another dose he was gratified by the doctor with a good-sized portion of quinine. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! They Are Charged with Assaulting Their Brother-in-Law. Article Text: Gainesville, Tex., Oct. 3.--Deputy Marshal SALISBURY passed through here to-day for Muskogee, I. T., with Bob and Clab HENDERSON, charged with assault on Bob ARMSTRONG. It seems that ARMSTRONG and a sister of the HENDERSONS eloped and were married in Burlington, Tex. On their way back home they met the bride's brothers, who threw down on the groom with a Winchester and demanded the surrender of their sister. ARMSTRONG objected, but the infuriated brothers took the bride and carried her back to the parental roof and the husband was notified not to come near the HENDERSON household. ARMSTRONG appealed to the federal authorities and had the two brothers arrested, but at last accounts the bride was still kept under guard away from her husband. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
