Mrs. SHIRLEY was a most remarkable woman in many respects. She was born in Houston, Tex., in 1843. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. VAN ALSTYNE, were quite wealthy, and spared nothing to give their daughter the highest education possible. She graduated with distinction in one of the northern schools and was then sent to Europe to perfect, as nearly as possible, her musical and literary education. On her return home she spoke the French, German and Italian languages as fluently as her mother tongue, while her musical attainments were none the less proficient. At the age of 23 she married Mr. Thomas SHIRLEY, and to them were born two children, both of whom are living near this city. Mr. SHIRLEY was very wealthy, and immediately after the war he invested all his own money and that obtained by marriage in the Houston and Texas Central railroad. In a short time they were among ! the largest, if not the largest, stockholders in the corporation. They owned their own private car and had the privilege of the whole road. About nine years ago they moved to Denison, but fortune had ceased to smile on them. They were in excellent circumstances during the first year of their residence in Denison. Her remains were shipped south this afternoon over the Central to Houston, in which city she will be buried. Her mother, Mrs VAN ALSTYNE, is still living. She also has a brother and a brother in law, Capt. E. P. TURNER, who is one of Houston's most prominent citizens. The remains were accompanied by Mr. SHIRLEY and the two children. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Mother and Two Children Buried Together...A Mad Dog in a Cow Lot. Article Text: Waco, Tex., March 24.--One day last week, perhaps last Tuesday, a mad dog under unusually severe spasms made a dash on the cow pen of Mr. B. MONEY, four miles north of Moody. Mrs. MONEY was milking when the dog entered the pen and the mad brute rushed straight at her, but she saved herself by knocking him down with a stick. The dog recovered from the blow and next attacked the cows, biting several, and was a length killed by one of the cows pinning him to the earth with her horn. It was an awful scene in the pen when the cows were bellowing with pain and terror and the dog snarling and biting. Mrs. MONEY is still ill from the shock. Near Mr. MONEY Mr. CORMAY resides on what is called the E. A. JONES tract. Last Friday night Mr. CORMAY's corncrib containing 2000 bushels of corn suddenly blazed up and went on burning until nothing was left but ashes. It was an unaccountable fire. Yesterday, in the fifth ward, two sons of Mr. H. P. WINN died of measles, aged respectively 12 and 6 years. This morning Mrs. WINN died, and there is now none left of the family except the father. All day two coffins lay in the front room and people went by hundreds to view the affecting scene. In one coffin the two boys were placed, the youngest with his head on his brother's bosom and the older boys arm embracing his little brother. Beside the casket containing the boys was that of the mother, a beautiful lady. She died apparently of a broken heart. Those who came brought flowers and at noon the blossoms were heaped in profusion in the room. The death of Mrs. WINN and her two sons were mentioned to-day in every pulpit in the city. Sheriff Dan FORD locked up S. E. HINTON his afternoon on a capias issued from the district court of Freestone county, charging him with embezzlement. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
