Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that if any of you are interested, the following Rootsweb mailing lists are now officially up for adoption. As I really don't have the time that needs to be put into them, I am hoping a more devoted list mom or dad, will step forward. :) This is a "first come, first served" adoption, and if you request to adopt, and don't hear back from me immediately, please be patient. Hello Listers, My grandfather lived and worked in Burkburnett from circa 1912 to 1929 when he left after the 1929 Stock Market Crash. He worked in the oil fields during this time. My father (born Louisiana 1912) and his brothers born in Burkburnett 1919, 1921 lived in Burkburnett until 1929. His sisters, Virgil (Dolly) and Alma Boyd also lived in Burkburnett. I am looking for anything, school photos, newspaper items, etc that may have anything about my dad's family. We have several picture postcards that they sent to relatives from Burkburnett. My apologies for my last post, which lacked sufficient detail for people who are unfamiliar with the Portal to Texas History. (If this is you, please read on!) The purpose of my initial post was to invite anyone who has, or will, use the Portal to Texas History to help us redesign the user interface by completing a brief survey. Your responses will help us gauge user satisfaction with the current Portal interface prior to introducing the new interface early this Summer. The Portal to Texas History is a gateway to digital collections from Texas libraries, museums, archives, genealogical societies, historical societies, and private collections. It contains primary source materials, including maps, books, manuscripts, diaries, photographs, and letters. It is managed by the University of North Texas Libraries. For those interested in Texas History, Heritage, Genealogy, etc. search and browse the Portal by clicking on “Researchers Portal” at: http://texashistory.unt.edu/ Afterwards, please take a few minutes to complete our brief survey. Just select “Take our Survey” near the top of any page in the “Researchers Portal” or go directly to the survey at: http://digital2.library.unt.edu/survey/ Many thanks for your help! Does anyone have a family tree on Sid Richardson's family? There is a remote possibility that I may have a tie-in (probably by marriage). Specific surnames I'd be looking for are HUNTER, SHULER, ASBERRY (or ASBURY) and RUST. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Keith Hunter Indianapolis (.. and no, I wouldn't get any inheritance money, just the satisfaction of proving or disproving a passed down story.)
Sam Wilson left his home in Racine WI when he was about 18. He never was back in WI. We had generic postcards from TX from him. I think he died young, probably in an oilfield . I don't know what kind of records were kept back in say the 1930's? (probably not many- for oilfield workers). I keep trying. I have been told to forget it. I ran both names and just need more info. What county in Texas did he live IN? Looking for information on my great grandfather, C.H. McDonald, Charles Henry but he went by Charlie McDonald. Born 9-8-1881 location unknown, died around 1953 in Tyler, TX. Though I don't know the name of the cemetery where he is buried, I do know he was buried in a mausoleum somewhere in Tarrant or Dallas County,Tx. He owned an oil company and had an office in the bank building in Corsicana, TX. He married a few times, one marriage to Esther Pinkerton, he also married 2 other times that I know of, both women were named Jewel and one had a daughter for him, Jewelldean. He and my greatgrandmother, Esther, were divorced after 3 children were born, Henry Taul McDonald, Rheba Jack McDonald, and Billie Beatrice McDonald. He had no formal education, could only sign his name yet became quite a rich man in the oil industry. Family story goes that he was listed in the Who's Who books from the 1940's or 1950's but unable to substantiate that. Have been unable to find one single thing out about him via research! Any one connected or with info please email with info! I do have a photo of him. He had red hair with a receding hairline, portly with blue eyes. His mother was Fannie Carrol, she had cancer of the tongue and had it cut out so she was unable to speak well in her later years. Do any of these names ring a bell? My second email is bubb1ette1959@yahoo.com He later had a church built in Tyler Texas and was a minister of that church until his death according to family story. Thanks and I hope this wasn't too long a query for your list! Annette Keen
Looking for any info on my great-grandfather, Charles Melvin ROOT. He was born August 19, 1867, in Springboro, Crawford County, PA. He died on October 8, 1937, in Evansville, IN, and is buried in Eastland, TX. He was an oil producer and had oil interests in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and California. C. M. ROOT and his nephew Andrew H. RHODES had a drilling company in Eastland, TX, and between 1922 and 1925 drilled 75 wells for the Big Lake Oil company in Reagan County, TX. Prior to that, C. M. was part owner of the ROOT-HUPP and DUFF oil producing company.
ROLL CALL: Researching Wilson, Sam B. 1882 Denmark (Soren Willadsen)
Kim, the Texas Railroad Commission keeps records on all oil wells drilled in Texas. If you contact them they may be able to give you information on the Ross Oil field. Dear List Members: Every year around this time, I post a call for an annual "roll call." Since so many families get new computers around the holidays and, because the period between December 15 and January 1 usually witnesses the largest growth of lists, this seems the perfect time to do it. So, between now and January 1, please feel free to post your "roll call" post. What is a roll call post? A roll call post is one in which you list the surnames you are researching and brief information about the lines you are seeking information on as they relate to the geographic nature of the list. A sample roll call message should look like this: "Researching the family of John DOE, b. 1837 Sagamon County, Ill, d. December 12, 1900, Rains County, TX. m. Susan JONES, December 1, 1860, Titus County, TX. Allied surnames include JOHNSON, SMITH, JONES, PETERS, ANDREWS." You may also wish to include any other pertinent information such as birtdates, places of burial, siblings, children, other places lived, etc. Essentially, include anything that may be helpful to other researchers to determine if they are related to your line. Also, if you are looking for any specific information like the burial location of someone, you may wish to include that. When posting the message, PLEASE phrase the subject as follows: "ROLL CALL: Researching DOE, JONES & SMITH" or something along those lines. Finally, please do not respond to this message! To post your roll call, please send the message to the list. The address for the list is "listname-l@rootsweb.com" where "listname" is the name of the list. Happy Holidays, Vince Leibowitz List Administrator
Hi, Joseph~ I'm not sure what info you are looking for, but I found Dorah in the 1900 and 1910 Census. In 1900, he was living with his parents, James and A. A. Hill in Justice Precinct, Parker County, TX. Dorah's name was misspelled as Dora, but I'm pretty sure it's him. He was born in Texas in May 1891. His sister Maggie E. was born in November 1894. James was a farmer. He was born in June 1870 in Tennessee. A. A. was born in January 1874, also in Tennessee. In the 1910 Census, James was 39, and his wife was listed as Ella, born in North Carolina. Dorah was listed as Dodie L., and he was 18. Maggie E. was 15, and there was another daughter listed. The family was still living in Precinct 4, Parker County, TX. Hope this helps. Sandy Rhodes
