Hi gang! Since it's pretty quiet in here, I thought maybe I could get a little discussion going. This IS a computer forum, so I thought I'd ask what genealogy you are using, and why you might like it. Personally, I have primarily been using Family Tree Maker since about Version 2 on Windows 3.0 (which makes me about older than dirt, according to my grandkids!) Actually, I'm older than that as far as genealogy goes, since I'm a geek from BD (Before DOS!) and used a Commodore 64 with a program called Family Roots. Anyway, I presently have FTM 2005, but still prefer the data entry layout of Version 11 just previous to this latest one. While it is true that the new version gives more data on the page about children, I don't like that idea that I need to be connected to the internet to use the program adequately (even if I DO have broadband access now that is "always on") I also don't really find the new version very "intuitive" as claimed, but I am a bit biased here, since the format in V11 really hasn't changed much since the early versions, and FTM2005 is a pretty drastic change for me. Family group sheet view seems ackward to get to, and is one of the main views that I like to use when quickly checking data. Since we did a review of PAF 5.2 a month or so ago at one of our meetings, I've dabbled a bit with that. For a free program, I'm really quite impressed with what it can do! For a $14.95 investment in the PAF Companion, it can do nearly everything that FTM can do! Not a bad value, IMO, especially if you are just getting started with a computer program! Being the computer geek that I am, I also dabble in Linux (SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional, to be more precise.) While I pretty much prefer Linux over Windows XP Pro, there isn't a lot of genealogy software available. About the only two I'm aware of are FTree and GRAMPS. I have downloaded a recent version of GRAMPS, but haven't really looked at it yet. When I can get to it, I'll give you my impression of it, if anyone is interested. So! What genealogy program to YOU use, and why do you like it!? Let's hear from some of you! Cheers, Phil
