    3. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Dennis McDonald's program last night! There are so many different documents out there that can (sometimes) provide us with information on our ancestors. I enjoyed getting to see some of those documents.........thanks, Dennis for an enjoyable and informative program! You rock! Jayna Picantine-Kobs

I'm sure ANY of us that has done genealogy research for any length of time has "been there, done that, and got the T-shirt" with something like that. No need to feel stupid, but at least now you know where you can get some info! *I've* made about six trips back to Iowa before a similar connection finally clicked in my head! LOL! Several generations of my ancestors never left the county, so it was logical their kids probably didn't either! Duh! I've learned now to at least take digital photos of any headstones with similar names, so if I make the connection later at least I'll have a reference for what to look for if I get back to that cemetery. Cheers, Phil

    3. I had sent the newsletter containing my trip to Oklahoma to my cousins that went with me. I kept thinking about the two Stuart graves that I knew nothing about. This thought kept rolling around in my head...and yesterday it hit me. The grave known as Martha Stuart....is my Uncles wife. How long had I searched for info on her?! How long had I searched for info on her parents??! The cousin that was also looking for my Montee...is the granddaughter of this Martha. Here I am on a committee of a genie society....and I didn't even make the connection. I feel stupid.

    1. Assumptions
    2. Phil Heberer
    3. It has come to my attention that perhaps I "assume" a bit too much when sending out the GSGS newsletters via email. I forget that not everyone has been using a computer for a long time, and know what to do with attachments in general, and .pdf attachments specificially, so here's a little tutorial: Since Outlook Express is the Windows default, and the majority of people are using Windows of some variety, I'll use that as my example. When you receive an attachment in OE, you will see a little paperclip icon in the top right corner of the message (there will also be a paperclip icon after the date received as you look at the list of messages in your Inbox). When you are reading the message, click on the paperclip icon at the top right, then click on the attachment and choose to "Open" (you can also "Save Attachments" at this point, which is safer to save them to a folder on your hard drive where you can scan the files with an anti-virus program first, but I can get into that later.) To read an Adobe .pdf (portable document format) file, you will need to have Adobe's free Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If the newsletter attachment doesn't open, then you will need to go to Adobe's web site and download it at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html (*I* usually uncheck the boxes under "Also Download", since all I want is the Acobat Reader.) You will need to remember where the file ! is downloaded (or download it to the Desktop so you can find it easily). Double-click on the downloaded file, and Acrobat Reader will install on your system. Once it's installed, you can delete the file you downloaded if you like. I HOPE this is clear enough for everyone to understand. I've been using computers for over 30 years now, so a lot of what I do is sort of second nature, and I don't really think about it, and I don't always use terms beginners can understand. If you need assistance on anything computer related, don't hesitate to ask me to explain it. Cheers, Phil

LOL! Yeah, you will find just about *anything* you want to do with FTM also points you to Ancestry.com. <sigh> In fact, Ancestry.com is now giving out free copies of FTM with subscriptions to Ancestry, so what's THAT tell ya!? :( I really *don't* like the FTM 2005, but adore FTM V11. I don't like the merge function of FTM2005. Now, when you merge two records with identical data, instead of merging the fields, it duplicates them. :( That means I'll have a LOT of work to do going through all my data and deleting the duplicates I don't want. <sigh> At least in it's favor though, it *does* show the duplicated in Family group sheet view, and I can delete them from there. > I am curious....I am reading a book on Genograms.....and there is a > program that does these called GenoPro....have you heard anything about > it? I'm curious. Have you heard of this? Curious..... I hadn't heard anything about GenoPro until you mentioned it. I just went to their web site and downloaded both the current version and the beta version. If I get a chance, I'll try to check it out for you, but it won't be until at least Monday or later. I need to get the newsletter done first! <g> Maybe someone else on the list might know something about it. Cheers, Phil

    1. Genealogy programs?
    2. Phil Heberer
    3. Hi gang! Since it's pretty quiet in here, I thought maybe I could get a little discussion going. This IS a computer forum, so I thought I'd ask what genealogy you are using, and why you might like it. Personally, I have primarily been using Family Tree Maker since about Version 2 on Windows 3.0 (which makes me about older than dirt, according to my grandkids!) Actually, I'm older than that as far as genealogy goes, since I'm a geek from BD (Before DOS!) and used a Commodore 64 with a program called Family Roots. Anyway, I presently have FTM 2005, but still prefer the data entry layout of Version 11 just previous to this latest one. While it is true that the new version gives more data on the page about children, I don't like that idea that I need to be connected to the internet to use the program adequately (even if I DO have broadband access now that is "always on") I also don't really find the new version very "intuitive" as claimed, but I am a bit biased here, since the format in V11 really hasn't changed much since the early versions, and FTM2005 is a pretty drastic change for me. Family group sheet view seems ackward to get to, and is one of the main views that I like to use when quickly checking data. Since we did a review of PAF 5.2 a month or so ago at one of our meetings, I've dabbled a bit with that. For a free program, I'm really quite impressed with what it can do! For a $14.95 investment in the PAF Companion, it can do nearly everything that FTM can do! Not a bad value, IMO, especially if you are just getting started with a computer program! Being the computer geek that I am, I also dabble in Linux (SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional, to be more precise.) While I pretty much prefer Linux over Windows XP Pro, there isn't a lot of genealogy software available. About the only two I'm aware of are FTree and GRAMPS. I have downloaded a recent version of GRAMPS, but haven't really looked at it yet. When I can get to it, I'll give you my impression of it, if anyone is interested. So! What genealogy program to YOU use, and why do you like it!? Let's hear from some of you! Cheers, Phil

    3. Hello Everyone, This list IS up and running, although it may be rather quiet for a few days until more people get the word that it's operational! <smile> While you are waiting for some postings, you might want to take a look at the "Acceptable Use Policy" at http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html. As of this evening (Jul 8), we have nine subscribers so far, so let the posting begin! Because of the small glitch we have with setting up a bank account to deposit membership checks, I'm pretty much making this an open forum for the moment (at least until we have an account open). The "rules" are pretty simple - essentially follow the Golden rule. I will be making up some general rules shortly, and will post them at a later time, and at maybe bi-monthly or so after that, depending how much use we actually get started in here (I hope it's a LOT!) ;-) Cheers, Phil
