I am just realizing a lot of my family and friends arrived in Upshur County, around the East Mountain, Gilmer area by late 1870s. Can someone give me an idea as to why the families were moving from Missouri, Arkansas and as far away as Georgia to come to Upshur? Perhaps land, mining, etc? Would like some input if possible. Hi Susie, We have written before-I cannot remember who we were trecing- lol In reply: The growing season is 245 days a year with average 45 inches of rain a year- temps from 37 in January to max of 96 in July--plus the watershed of two rivers--- ANYWAY go to THE TEXAS HANDBOOK ONLINE and type in Upshur--it brings up a very nice-extensive article on the early and present county. How is the weather in Seattle?
