_____ From: Erica McKewen [mailto:emckewen@tsl.state.tx.us] Sent: Friday, July 27, 2007 12:42 PM Hi. I work with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. As you may know, we're embarking on a two year renovation of our main facility in Austin. Below is a notice we are trying to distribute out how (and when) the renovation will affect our researchers. Any way you can help us get the word out would be very much appreciated. I had hoped that you would include something in Stirpes, or distribute to your members in any other way you see fit. Thanks for your help, Erica McKewen Texas State Library and Archives Commission ***************************** The Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building, home of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, is getting a facelift! This is good news for both our customers and our staff, as the 46-year old building has been in great need of renovation. We expect construction work on the two-year renovation to begin in September 2007, but some important changes are afoot now that may impact your research with us. Please read on! We are pleased that we'll be able to stay open throughout most of the renovation; however, services will be limited, and much of our collection will be moved offsite. As with any construction project, unexpected events may cause us to close for certain brief periods. We urge researchers to call ahead when planning a trip to our facility. The number is 512-463-5455. With advance notice, the official state records of Texas stored offsite can be retrieved for you. Unfortunately a portion of our collection will be inaccessible during the renovation. Bookmark <http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/> www.tsl.state.tx.us and follow the Renovation News link, which includes a timeline and will be kept current with news about our services throughout the two year project. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we bring our facilities into the 21st Century.
Thank you for the notice. Will see what I can do to help. One thing which probably is not know is that back in the early 1940s, when my family and I lived in Austin, the Archives, etc., etc. (of course) at Camp Mabry in "huts". My late Mother was doing a lot of research and was very upset with where all our valuable material had to be kept. So, she started a campaign and wrote each of our Texas Legislators asking that an Archives/Library building be built to save the records. She wrote so often many of them who know my late Father told him "Please tell your wife to stop writing. We are going to build an Archives/Library building". And so it was and still is. Seems like this would make the building a little older than 46 years. Of course, I was still rather young at the time and do not remember when it was actually started or when it was finished. Just wanted to pass this on. Billie Beth Moore DAR/DRT/UDC, ETC.....
