Is this an indexing issue on a beta data-set, or was there a major loss of records sometime before the data was microfilmed? I managed to find certificates for my maternal grandfather, one of his brothers and his sister, his wife and her parents. It was the first good evidence that Lillias Elvira Usry, wife of John Oatus Green, was his sister and my great-aunt. Thanks to all who made the data available and those who told you and me about the web site. About all I have left of my ancestors who were considerate enough to die in Texas is my paternal great-grandfather, Solomon Usry, said to have died in Smith County 10 June 1892 (or perhaps 6 October 1892). He was born in GA in 1854. I believe he had a son John that died about the same time and place. I have not found any evidence of either death. Could I interest anyone in looking in newspaper archives for any mention of him?
Hi Walter, Texas Deaths were not required to be recorded before 1903, I believe it was. I may be off a year or so. So, anything before that time is going to be scarce. And, even then, it was not uniformly complied with. I have grandparents who died in the 1920's for whom there are no death certificates. People died at home with maybe yes and maybe no as to a Dr. attending at the time. The Dr. filed the death certificate if he had the money to do so. When you remember that a lot of the Dr.'s back then did not get paid in cash, and usually on a account basis. So, if the Dr. did not have the .50 or so to file the certificate, it was not filed..The counties that died have certificates prior to 1903 were the ones that had implemented the procedure themselves, on a county by county basis. Hope this helps.
