    1. Re: [TX-ETGS] Millersburg 1832

    3. After the Republic [of Texas] was established in 1836, Bowie Co. was part of the large Red River County, and it was not until 1841 that Bowie was set apart and designated as a separate County. In the meantime, however, between 1836 and 1841, there were overlapping claims on this area by the new Republic and the State of Arkansas. In fact, there were two county seats established, one by each State, just a few miles apart. One was Clarksville and the other was Jonesboro. Actually, the original Miller County extended North quite a bit into what is now Oklahoma, and in two separate treaties with the Indians, Arkansas finally gave up their claims north of Red River, forcing the early settlers out of the area. Most of the evicted settlers came on south across the river, and ended up as good Texans when it was all over. Finally, due to the difficulties brought on by the joint ownership, and the refusal of the Republic residents to recognize the Arkansas authorities, the Arkansas State Legislature abolished the original Miller County and pulled out of the area. Another Miller County was established in 1874, where it is now located. 3. Thank you for the notice. Will see what I can do to help. One thing which probably is not know is that back in the early 1940s, when my family and I lived in Austin, the Archives, etc., etc. (of course) at Camp Mabry in "huts". My late Mother was doing a lot of research and was very upset with where all our valuable material had to be kept. So, she started a campaign and wrote each of our Texas Legislators asking that an Archives/Library building be built to save the records. She wrote so often many of them who know my late Father told him "Please tell your wife to stop writing. We are going to build an Archives/Library building". And so it was and still is. Seems like this would make the building a little older than 46 years. Of course, I was still rather young at the time and do not remember when it was actually started or when it was finished. Just wanted to pass this on. Billie Beth Moore DAR/DRT/UDC, ETC..... 3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, July 14, 2007 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Paula Perkins Program: "Immigration and Naturalization Records for Historians and Genealogists" One of the most difficult problems family historians encounter is locating an ancestral village in the Old World. Part of the solution to that problem entails knowing when and where an ancestor arrived in what became the United States. Covering time frames from the Colonial period to present, this program will study the types of records that may contain information concerning the arrival of an ancestor in America. It will also study the contents of those records and where those records may be located. Paula Perkins, a native Texan, is a professional consultant, lecturer, and instructor of genealogy classes. She has been featured throughout Texas and other southern states as a speaker, including radio shows guest, for over twenty-five years. Currently she is president elect for the Collin County Genealogical Society. A past president of Peters Colony Historical Society, she also served as executive vice president of Dallas Genealogical Society, She created and maintains a web site as county coordinator for the TXGenWeb. Paula has successfully accomplished research in many Southern and U. S repositories. She is a past coordinator for the Dallas, Texas local PBS station community outreach program in conjunction with the popular PBS series "Ancestors." Paula is also an Instructor of genealogical courses at the Houston Community College and a member of several genealogical/historical societies where her ancestors once resided. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Scott Fitzgerald will present a program on "Going Googling". Information on upcoming programs can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/meetings.html ETGS will be the local host this year for the Texas State Genealogical Society's annual conference on November 9 and 10, 2007. More information can be found at our web-site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/Meetings/2007/tsgs_2007_flyer.pdf East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. ETGS publishes the "East Texas Family Records" four times a year which features articles and records concerning our six counties and a monthly newsletter "The Bulletin" which features information about our society, things of interest to our members and information about our six counties. ETGS has began a First Families of East Texas covering our six counties.
