The Smith County Project has been moved off of Rootsweb to the new ETGS Server at: http://www.etgs.org/ For Smith County, Texas, the new URL is: http://www.etgs.org/txsmith/ The old URL at Rootsweb was: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txsmith/ This URL now just provides a pointer to the new URL. If you had bookmarked any of the pages in the Smith County Project while they were on Rootsweb, you will need to throw out the old 'Favorites' and go search for the new URL. The Texas TXGenWeb Project and many of the other County Project websites have also moved off of Rootsweb onto the new TXGenWeb Server at: http://www.txgenweb.org/ If you had bookmarked any of the other counties in Texas while they were on Rootsweb, you will need to go to the TXGenWeb Project and check for the new URL. Sorry for this inconvenience - it was necessary. Larry Lawrence E. Oliver; Smith County TXGenWeb Project Manager,

I'll be giving a talk about Trammel's Trace in Mt. Enterprise on April 26th. Trammel's Trace was the first road into Texas from the north, running from Fulton, Arkansas to Nacogdoches where it connected to the El Camino Real. Its earliest use by Anglos dates back to about 1813. The focus will be on Rusk County, but we will also cover a general history of Trammel's Trace and Nicholas Trammell, Jr., the man for whom the road is named. The program will be from 1-3pm at the Mt. Enterprise Community Center. Take a look at my new website at http://drop.io/trammelstrace. There you'll find a flyer with the details. Besides a brief presentation, there are maps, pictures, and even poems pertaining to Trammel's Trace. I think you'll like it. Gary Pinkerton

In regard to the Holts: my husband's family are from Tennessee....in the Lawrenceburg area, and Pulaski, and Columbia ....so, not sure how many migrated to Texas, since my husband moved here to work for NASA, and his family was all in Tennessee.... I am native Texas with surnames in my family of Parker, Childress, Griffin, Huckleby; Thornton's and Dean's of Alabama; the Parker's and Griffins came to Houston, Harris County, coming from England; and the Huckleby's and Childress's from Madison Co, Mexia, Navasota, and other central Texas areas....The Childress family coming from South Carolina I believe originally, by way of Alabama, and Mississippi to Texas.... I don't have that name; our Childress's came from the Levi Childress line in Texas , which you can see at the web site of Pat Childress....Levi even has a photo ....you can look for the geneology listing of the family there.... my dad was William Charles Childress.... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jpcfamily/childress_ancestor s1.htm "The search for happiness is one of the chief sources of unhappiness." I don't know where my Holt's are related to your Holt's, but Jack Holt, the movie actor, was my grand mother's (my mother's mother) first cousin. Jack's son, Tim Holt was my grand mother's second cousin. It looks like the Holt's married into the McClarney which was my grand mother's father's name His (James "Jim" McClarney) father was Holt McClarney. I am leaving Friday morning for a class reunion in Eastland, Texas and I hope to stop by the Ranger Cemetery (10 miles east of Eastland) and see if I can find James "Jim" McClarney tombstone. Since James McClarney had three wives, we (two other people researching this information) are not even sure where he is buried. There are several McClarney buried in the Eastland Cemetery, but I don't know about Holts.
