Hi Walter, Texas Deaths were not required to be recorded before 1903, I believe it was. I may be off a year or so. So, anything before that time is going to be scarce. And, even then, it was not uniformly complied with. I have grandparents who died in the 1920's for whom there are no death certificates. People died at home with maybe yes and maybe no as to a Dr. attending at the time. The Dr. filed the death certificate if he had the money to do so. When you remember that a lot of the Dr.'s back then did not get paid in cash, and usually on a account basis. So, if the Dr. did not have the .50 or so to file the certificate, it was not filed..The counties that died have certificates prior to 1903 were the ones that had implemented the procedure themselves, on a county by county basis. Hope this helps. I recieved this from the Texas Loose Ends rootsweb list. Although it states that is about the 5 counties mentioned, I found much about Anderson Co. history and all of East Texas history complete with photos and a lot of genealogical information. If you go to the bottom of the page it has a search item and you can type in any name that you are interested in. It even has info on south and west Texas areas. Karen Moore Kerr History of Texas, together with a biographical history of Milam, Williamson, Bastrop, Travis, Lee and Burleson counties : containing a concise history of the state, with portraits and biographies of prominent citizens of the above named counties, and personal histories of many of the early settlers and leading families Published in 1893 ... entire book on-line w/ FREE search engine ... http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/TBDP/UNT/meta-pth-29785.tkl Search Inside box is located on right-handside under the image of the book's cover ...
Walter, The only death certificates that will be on this file are those that were sent to Austin by the county. Many counties didn't send the certificates to Austin until the 1930's. Some didn't record many of the deaths. The East Texas Genealogical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Tyler Public Library in the Taylor Auditorium. The featured speaker will be Mic Barnette of Dallas/Plano. Mr. Barnette’s subject will be “Taking the Mystery Out of the Georgia Land Lotteries.” Founded in 1733 Georgia was one of the smallest and last of the thirteen original American colonies to be settled. After the American Revolution Georgia purchased huge expanses of land from the Indians and chose to distribute this newly acquired land in an unusual fashion known as the Georgia Land Lotteries. Over time Georgia held eight land lotteries known by and designated by the year in which they were held; 1805, 1807, 1820, 1821, 1827, two in 1832 and a final one in 1833. In his talk, “Taking the Mystery Out of The Georgia Land Lotteries,” Mr. Barnette, a former professional Georgia genealogical and historical researcher, will enlighten genealogists and historians of East Texas with the history of the eight lotteries, how they were conducted, and how one can use the records today to locate elusive and often difficult to find Georgia ancestors. Mr. Barnette, owner of Barnette’s Family Tree Book Company, attended Southwest Texas University where he obtained a degree in history, political science, and education. He has been actively engaged in genealogy since he was sixteen and has written numerous articles which have appeared in many national, state, and local magazines, newsletters, and quarterlies. For ten years he penned a widely read award winning historical-genealogical column in the Houston Chronicle. Mic currently works in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library and volunteers at the Plano Public Library’s Haggard Library. He is a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Sons of the Confederacy, the Sons of the American Revolution, and is an Admiral in the Texas Navy. Approximately thirty minutes following the conclusion of the regular program and refreshments, the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet with Barbara Galbreath, Tyler Library Local and Family History Librarian, who will present a program on “Internet Resources Available in the Tyler Public Library.” ETGS meetings are free and open to the public. A project that we have been working for over 6 months is nearly complete. The first 20 volumes of East Texas Family Records published by East Texas Genealogical Society which cover six counties {Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk & Smith} and the complete set of The Tracings published by the Anderson County Genealogical are now on-line at the Portal to Texas History website. They are searchable. The Texas State Genealogical provided funds to help pay for the scanning through its Partner Society one-time Archival Grant.
