The Henderson County Historical Society and the Daniel McMahon Chapter of the DAR have are co-sponsoring a genealogy workshop for area residents from 10 am to 3 PM on Saturday, February 21. The workshop will be held at the Henderson County Historical Museum Annex at 207 North Prairieville. It is open to anyone interested in working on their family lines and there will be no charge. The workshop will contain two classes titled "Making the Most of the Evidence You Have" taught by Judy Jacobson, a professional genealogist and DAR registrar and "What Sources Can Be Found Locally" by Sarah Jane Brown, curator of the museum and chair of the Henderson County Historical Commission. There will also be one-on-one help at reference and research tables staffed by members of the Henderson County Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Athens Genealogical Organization and the Henderson County Historical Commission. The study areas will be divided by regions and interest areas. Books from the personal libraries of experienced researchers and the local history museum will be available to use. Attendees are being asked to bring a clear statement of the problem being researched. Although blank pedigree charts and family group sheets will be available at the workshop, time can be saved if the attendee fills ones ahead of time. Lists of sources of the information, such as birth, marriage or death certificates; obituaries, wills or family Bible would be helpful. A one hour break at noon will allow attendees to go get something to eat. However, attendees can bring a brown bag lunch and work with the books through the lunch period. Coffee and soft drinks will be provided. To reserve a space call Sarah Jane Brown at 903-675-4222 or Judy Jacobson at 903-677-9686. Note that because of space limitations, the registration will be closed if the meeting space fills. Late walk-ins may be turned away.

Hi All, I am going to the Dallas Library on Feb. 28th to attend DGS's Irish Genealogy Seminar. If anyone wants to ride along, I can take 3 or maybe 4 people. Leaving about 7 a.m. to arrive about 9 a.m. and then starting back at about 3:30. You can attend the seminar or just research at the library. Not confirmed yet but I am also considering attending DGS's Government Documents on March 21st. So the same offer is made if I decide to go. More information on the seminars can be found at: http://dallasgenealogy.org <http://dallasgenealogy.org/> http://dallasgenealogy.org/fundraising/Seminars/2009-02-28-IrishGen.pdf http://dallasgenealogy.org/fundraising/Seminars/2009-03-21-GovDoc.pdf Scott

ETGS to Dedicate Meeting to Remembrance of Versie Terrell The East Texas Genealogical Society will celebrate African-American Month on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the Tyler Public Library’s Taylor Auditorium, 201 S. College Ave. The program will be dedicated to the remembrance of ETGS member Versie Isabell Terrell. Ms. Terrell, a native of Smith County, a graduate of Texas College, and a retired teacher died in Tyler on January 5, 2009. She and her husband, Claude Terrell, Jr. had been active in the community in the study of and preservation of African-American family records for many years. The featured speaker will be Gwendolyn McMillan Lawe, director of A.C. McMillan African-American Museum in Emory, Texas and 2003 Smithsonian Fellow. Ms. Lawe will speak on the genealogical research on her family and other African-Americans in Rains County. Following refreshments ETGS President Sam Kidd will present a video titled “Lester’s Trip of 1,500 Miles and 120 Years,” the story of the research of an African-American family in Canada for their Smith County, Texas roots. The video will be aired on Canadian television later this year, and includes research provided by members of the Smith County Historical Society and East Texas Genealogical Society. Much of the video was filmed in Smith County and concludes with Lester Mapp’s meeting with his Smith County cousins. Persons interested in African-American family research and friends of Ms. Terrell are encouraged to attend. ETGS meetings are free and open to the public. It appears the dates stated in the paper as the death years are reversed. There is a Death Certificate (DC) for Matt Terry b. 22 Jul 1887, Crockett, d. 24 Feb, 1953, Smith Co, resided at 1212 W. Paul, Tyler; married but wife not shown; DC states buried at St. Louis Cem. but he is not shown on the St. Louis enumeration. His father was Matt Terry, mother was Susan Crowder. Informant was Andrew J. Terry. There is a N. H. Terry 1888 - 1953 listed on the Old St. Louis Cem list. I suspect the "N" is an error. This appears to be the M. H. Terry shown in the Tyler paper. There is also a Death Certificate for Mimi A. Terry b. 13 Jan 1913, d. 21 Mar 1959, Smith Co, resided at 1212 W. Paul, Tyler; buried at Branham Cemetery. Her father was Thomas Branham and mother was Catherine Clemmons. Her Death Certificate shows she was a widow. There is a Mrs. Mimi Terry, d. 27 Mar 1959, FH marker only on the Old St. Louis Cem list next to N. [M] H. Terry as of 1984. Thomas Branham's DC [25 Dec 1844 - 06 Apr 1919] also shows burial at St. Louis but he is not listed there nor is he listed on the Old St. Louis list. I haven't found Catherine Clemmons Branham. I noticed that Walter Henry Branham's address was 1408 Noonday Rd, Tyler and he is shown as married. There is a DC for Sadie Branham [06 Dec 1893 - 21 Jul 1967], widowed, buried at Branham Cem. Her address was also shown as 1408 Noonday Rd, Tyler. Both are shown on the list for the Old St. Louis Cem. list with minor variations in the dates shown on list from those shown on their Death Certificates. Old St Louis List Death Certificate Terry N. H 1888- 1953 Matt Terry 22 Jul 1887 - 24 Feb 1953 Terry, Mrs. Mimi d. 27 Mar 1959 Mimi A. Terry 13 Jan 1913 - 21 Mar 1959 Branham, Walter H. Walter Henry Branham 11 Oct 1884 - 17 Aug 1957 14 Oct 1882 - 17 Aug 1957 Branham, Sadie 1885 - 1967 Sadie Branham 06 Dec 1893 - 21 Jul 1967 I might also mention the DC for Neuell Branham 26 Apr 1894 - 31 Dec 1934, father Sam Branham, mother Catherine Branham, widowed...buried at Branham Cem. He is not listed on either the St Louis or the Old St Louis list. He was a teacher and the informant was Julius Cannon. As time and weather permit I will be doing some more work on this cemetery but at the moment I am already working on four other old cemeteries not listed on the Smith Co website. I would appreciate any additional information anyone might have. Understanding Legal Terms in Documents Subject for ETGS The East Texas Genealogical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, January 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Tyler Public Library in the Taylor Auditorium. The featured speaker will be Michael J. Vaughn, a retired attorney, who has been engaged in genealogical research for 53 years. The title of his program will be “Legal Arcana for Genealogists (Who Said That Latin is a Dead Language.). Genealogists face the problem of encountering words in original records that are dated or obsolete, including legal terms in both English and Latin – French in some places, and even words not obsolete that are not used in everyday conversation. A researcher cannot really understand a document without understanding what the author of the document was trying to accomplish by the use of the terms in the document. The program is intended as a primer of legal terms that genealogists encounter in their research. Attendees will be given a handout of eleven pages of legal term descriptions to use in their research . Approximately thirty minutes following the conclusion of the regular program and refreshments, the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Tyler Jr. College Director of Distance Education Ken Craver will present a program titled “Understanding Adobe Acrobat Documents.” ETGS meetings are free and open to the public. For more information about ETGS go to our web-site: www.etgs.org or contact June Everheart, Publicity Director at 1stvp@etgs.org or (903)877-4501.
