    3.  Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that if any of you are interested, the following Rootsweb mailing lists are now officially up for adoption. As I really don't have the time that needs to be put into them, I am hoping a more devoted list mom or dad, will step forward. :) This is a "first come, first served" adoption, and if you request to adopt, and don't hear back from me immediately, please be patient.                                                                      Take care,                                                                         Diana                                                                       List mom AL-FREEDMEN AL-ORPHANS ALDALLAS AMERICAN-INDIAN-MISSIONS ANCHORS ANDERSONVILLE ANKER BOONE-DANIEL-KY CASHATT CONNACHER DAMATO DanvilleCrossing DanvilleQueries DAVIS-VA DOLLAR ETN-OZ FL-AfricaAmer FL-FREEDMEN FL-PAHOKEE FLCOLLIE FLHARDEE FLHERNAN FLMARTIN FLOSCEOL FLPALMBE FLUNION FRYER GA-ELBERT-CO GAWALTON HONEYMAN IA-FREEDMEN IABUTLER IACLARKE IACLAY IAFRANKL IAMONROE IATAYLOR IN-FREEDMEN IN-LAWRENCE-MTZionCemetery INBLACKF Justice-Marshall KS-FREEDMEN KSJEWELL KY-ADOPTIONS KY-AUBHISTSOC KY-FEUDS KY-FOLKLORE-GHOST-STORIES KY-FREEDMEN KY-INTERTRIBAL KY-LITTLE-SANDY KY-REGULATORS KY-SLAVES KY-STURGEON KYADAIR KYCARTER KYEDMONS KYLARUE KYLINCOL KYMORGAN-HISTORY LA-FREEDMEN LAACADIA LAASSUMP LAWEBSTE LONGLEY MARTINDALE MO-FREEDMEN MOWORTH MS-FREEDMEN MSAFRICANAMER MSCLAY MSKEMPER MSMONTGO MSRANKIN MSWINSTON NC-FREEDMEN NCCOLUMB NCSCOTS NJ-AFAM NJ-FREEDMEN NJ-ORPHANS NYFULTON OBERLIN OBERMAN OBRE OH-FREEDMEN OH-SLAVES OKCCGS ORDER-OF-ELKS ORDER-OF-THE-EASTERN-STAR PA-BUCKS-CEMETERIES PA-DEL-CEMETERIES PA-DEL-CHESTER PA-FOLKLORE PA-FREEDMEN PA-MEMORIES PA-MONTGOMERY-CEMETERIES PA-OLD-RAYSTOWN PA-PHILA-CEMETERIES PA-RIDLEY PA-ROLLCALL PA-SUSQUEHANNA PA-SW-OBITS PADATA PAMCKEESPORT ROBENHORST ROBIE ROBSON SC-DUTCHFORK SC-FREEDMEN SC-VETERANS SOOTER SOUTHERN-CHAT SOUTHERN-PLANTATIONS Southern-Trails SPARKES STAGGS STURGILL-EAST-KY TN-BLOUNT-OBITUARIES TN-FREEDMEN TUTT TX-BAPTIST TX-CATHOLIC TX-COTTON TX-EARLY-LEADERS TX-FREEDMEN TX-HISTORY TX-LUTHERAN TX-MEMORIES TX-MERCERCOL TX-METHODIST TX-OILGEN TX-REVOLUTION TX-SHARECROP TX-VETERANS TX-WOOD-CEM TX-WOODMEN TXBOSQUE TXCALDWE TXCALLAH TXCHAMBE TXCOCHRA TXCRANE TXCULBER TXDUVAL TXHARTLE TXHEMPHI TXHUNT-ARCHI VES TXHUNT -OBITS TXKENDAL TXKENEDY TXKENT TXKIMBLE TXMOORE VA-AfricanAmer VA-CHURCH-HILL VA-FREEDMEN VA-ROLLCALL VAAMELIA VACHARLE VACNORFO VADINWID VAGREENE VAISLEOF VALDRES VANANSEM VANOTTOW VANVOORHEES VAPOWHAT VAPRINCEG; WV-FREEDMEN WV-MetroValley WVPRESTO WVSUMMER

    3. Teresa Harris wrote: > Who were the biggest cotton producers in early (pre 1845) San Augustine > Co., TX? Dear Teresa, As far as before 1845.............. There was no federal census in Texas in 1840, as it was not a state, but the Republic did take a census in 1840. It is one of the holdings at the San Augustine city library: http://www.salibrary.org/ The city library also has the tax rolls for city and county beginning about 1850. You will find other help on early Texas residents here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/restx.htm#vol1 And the San Augustine Mexican census of 1835 is here: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/census/1835/1835sana.txt and here: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/census/1835/1835bsan.txt (transcribed in two parts). U.S. agricultural census schedules were taken for 1850. This census included crops produced for each farmer and the size of the crop produced (as well as animals owned, etc.) Only the farmers that produced $100 or more annually were included. This website might help: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/census/nonpopulation/index.html *** I notice that Amazon is selling both volumes 1 and 2 of the 1850 Texas agriculture census. *** It might also help to look at the federal census slave schedule for 1850. Most likely (but not definitely) the really big cotton planters were also the biggest slaveholders. You can find this slave schedule at Ancestry.com (fee-based site), but there might be non-fee sites that have it also. The federal census general population schedule in 1850 listed occupations and real estate values for each householder. That might be a clue. A transcription is here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/tx/sanaugustine/1850/ The following website will tell you about early agriculture in San Augustine: http://www.reynoldsrecords.com/texas/sanaugustine_history.html Very interesting data there. It says that in 1860, 144 residents were slaveholders, but only 8 owned more than 40 slaves. These probably (but not definitely) were the biggest cotton producers at that time. The San Augustine county genealogical site is::::: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txsanaug/index.htm The Stephen F. Austin Univ Steen Library houses the East Texas Research Center: http://libweb.sfasu.edu/ Warmest Regards, Donna P.S. I doubt that there are old cotton gin records going back that far, but miracles do happen. :-) --------------------------------------------------------------- Joseph Bayliss, my 2nd great grand uncle, is listed in the Mexican census of San Augustine in 1835.. He enlisted with the Texas Army of the Republic the following January and died at the Alamo. It is well documented that he took the oath with David Crockett's men at Nacogdoches on Jan 14 before a municipal judge, and that he rode to the Alamo with them. And of course, in less than 8 weeks they were all dead. Joseph Bayliss was from Tennessee, and Crockett and his men from Tennessee traveled to Nacogdoches via San Augustine. It is reported in all the Alamo lists that Joseph Bayliss traveled from Tennessee to Texas **with** David Crockett, but that is doubtful, since I find him in the San Augustine tax roll of 1829 and in the census of 1835. He was single and in his 20s and had come to Texas as a land surveyor. (Mexico was giving away vast amounts of land to Anglo settlers, and I'm sure surveying was a lucrative business.) I really wish my research had never led to this discovery. Sometimes genealogy uncovers stories too sad to bear. But I digress. Good luck in finding your information.

    1. Annual Roll Call
    2. Vince Leibowitz
    3. Dear List Members: Every year around this time, I post a call for an annual "roll call." Since so many families get new computers around the holidays and, because the period between December 15 and January 1 usually witnesses the largest growth of lists, this seems the perfect time to do it. So, between now and January 1, please feel free to post your "roll call" post. What is a roll call post? A roll call post is one in which you list the surnames you are researching and brief information about the lines you are seeking information on as they relate to the geographic nature of the list. A sample roll call message should look like this: "Researching the family of John DOE, b. 1837 Sagamon County, Ill, d. December 12, 1900, Rains County, TX. m. Susan JONES, December 1, 1860, Titus County, TX. Allied surnames include JOHNSON, SMITH, JONES, PETERS, ANDREWS." You may also wish to include any other pertinent information such as birtdates, places of burial, siblings, children, other places lived, etc. Essentially, include anything that may be helpful to other researchers to determine if they are related to your line. Also, if you are looking for any specific information like the burial location of someone, you may wish to include that. When posting the message, PLEASE phrase the subject as follows: "ROLL CALL: Researching DOE, JONES & SMITH" or something along those lines. Finally, please do not respond to this message! To post your roll call, please send the message to the list. The address for the list is "listname-l@rootsweb.com" where "listname" is the name of the list. Happy Holidays, Vince Leibowitz List Administrator

    1. [TX-COTTON] ROLL CALL:BURDITT
    2. Researching the Burditt(Burdett,Burdette,Burditte) family of Travis County. Am able to connect the family of my grandfather. His parents were Henry Burditt and Virginia(JAMES) Burditt. He was from the Garfield area. She was from Del Valle. She was the daughter of John James and Mary (HILL) James. He was born in Virginia or West Virginia. She was born in Tennessee. Difficulty finding the parents of Henry Burditt(1863-1920). Believe that his mother may have been a Benford. These Burditts are descendants of the slaves of Jesse F. Burditt and progeny.

    1. [TX-COTTON] Semi-Annual Roll Call
    2. Vince Leibowitz
    3. Greetings, List: It is time once again for our twice-a-year Roll Call. As most of you know who have been on the list a while, Roll Calls are conducted once between Christmas and the new year and once after Memorial Day. To participate in the roll call, send a message to the list which meets the following guidelines: 1.) Includes in the subject line the words ROLL CALL and the surname such as: "Roll Call: DOE" 2.) Include in the message a brief synopsis of the information you have on the family as well as any additional information you are seeking. 3.) Include your EMAIL ADDRESS; replies to roll call postings should be done off-list. 4.) Include the URL of your genealogy webpage, if you have one. Please keep your messages short, but include any pertinent information that would help another reader determine whether or not they have information which would pertain to your line. Also, remember that these messages are ARCHIVED through rootsweb, so even if you don't find the information you are looking for now, someone doing a search may find your message later and be able to assist you. If you have questions, please feel free to ask. The roll call will run from May 26 until June 2, 2003 at midnight, EST. Please don't post roll call messages after that time. Also, please remember that we do a roll call twice a year and that only the listmanager can call a roll call. This is because, as new members join the group, if each one posted a roll call, that would take up a great deal of the lists' time. Thanks, Vince Leibowitz

    1. [TX-COTTON] Hinson/Henson and Blackland Alliance
    2. Karen K
    3. Besides the census, I can only find one record of my gg grandfather and my g grandmother. His name was James M. Hinson and his daughter was Samantha Eva Hinson. There was an old ledger for the Blackland Alliance that showed they discontinued their dues in Sept of 1898. This alliance had something to do with growing cotton in North east Texas. 1. [TX-COTTON] Annual End-Year Roll Call
    2. Vince Leibowitz
    3. Greetings, List Members: As you know, for the past several years, roll calls have been initiated the list during June and December. Our December roll call is usually the largest because so many people with new computers or new Internet software make their way on to the lists. As part of the roll-call each member is invited (not required) to post a message with a brief synopsis of the ancestors they are researching, including relevant dates, places, etc. to the list. An example would be as follows: Seeking information on the John Jay DOE family. John Jay DOE, born 12/12/1810, Richmond, VA, died 01/01/1901, Austin, Texas Married ( on 04/04/1844 in Long Island, NY) Elizabeth Sue SMITH, born 01/09/1817, Richmond, VA, death date & place unknown (or something along those lines.) Please remember to CHANGE THE SUBJECT of the message when you reply. The subject should read something like: John & Myra Winston DOE Family. (Accurate subjects also help when the messages are archived by rootsweb.com) The roll call will end at midnight on January 1, 2003. All list members are asked to respond to the roll call (should they desire) prior to that time. Roll Calls are conducted twice a year and only on the instruction of the list administrator. This is so the list won't get flooded for roll call requests every time someone new joins the list. Best Wishes & Happy Holidays, Vince Leibowitz List Moderator

    1. Semi-Annual Roll Call
    2. Vince Leibowitz
    3. Greetings, Listers: It is time once again for our semi-annual roll call. As most you know that have been on the list for at least six months, twice a year I call for a "roll call" so that we may share information about the lines we are working on so that everyone on the list may be made aware of that information, and hopefully find some much-needed links. We had quite a nice response to the last Roll Call, and I'm sure we will this time, too. I just want to take a moment and lay the ground rules: The roll call will run from Sunday, July 7 to Sunday, July 14, 2002. All Roll Call responses should be posted by that time. When posting a roll call message, REPLY/SEND DIRECTLY TO THE LIST, and not to me, the list owner. In the subject line, place the words ROLL CALL and whatever surnames you are working on, or a location you are seeking information on for the surname, etc. Please keep subject lines brief. As always, if you have any questions, please contact me at vpltz@vzinet.com. So, 3....2....1....Let the roll call begin! Vince Leibowitz List Administrator

    1. 2002 Roll Call
    2. Vince Leibowitz
    3. Greetings, one and all! As I have done in years past, I will call for a 'roll call' to coencide with the new year. Doing a roll call after the holidays is usually a perfect time, because there are a lot of folks that get new computers and internet access as holiday presents that have found their way on to the lists. An additional roll call is usually done in June. If you aren't familiar with what a roll call is, it is basically a time when everyone on the list submits to the list the surnames, etc., they are working on, as they relate to the list for which the roll call is called. Also, I ask that everyone follow the following format with roll calls: In the subject line, put something descriptive, for example: DOE, John M. 1818-1900, Missouri & Texas or The DOE family of Hunt County, Texas In the body of the message, include something like this: Seeking infromation on the DOE/SMITH family. John William DOE, b. 1819 Golden, TX, d. 1900 Quinlan, TX. m. Anna Smith, 1870, Tyler, Tx. Be specific, but don't include too much information. Also, remember: do not include information about the living. Also, remember to put your email address on all posts. To post your roll call message, send it directly to the list. Do not reply to this message, as the reply may end up going to me. This Roll Call will run through January 6. Please do not post roll call messages after that time. Thanks a million, and have a happy 2002! Vince Leibowitz vpltz@vzinet.com List owner/moderator
