Texas was not a state in 1840 -- so no 1840 census. Anyway, the first census where families were listed is 1850. Hi, I was just wondering if there are any census records for Tx before 1850? I have an ancestor, my ggf was in Tx before 1840. He settled in what was Montgomery co. then, later it became Walker co. I would like to have a look up for the following family: Jesse Johnson b. 1841 MS. and Lucy C. Johnson b. 1855 GA. They were on the 1880 census for Travis Co. TX. with five children: Ransom, Marion, Virginia, Lucy and Eugenia. I believe by 1890 they were in Gonzales Co or Lavaca County.
