Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that if any of you are interested, the following Rootsweb mailing lists are now officially up for adoption. As I really don't have the time that needs to be put into them, I am hoping a more devoted list mom or dad, will step forward. :) This is a "first come, first served" adoption, and if you request to adopt, and don't hear back from me immediately, please be patient. Thank you for posting this site. My grandparents and many of my relatives were Primitive Baptists. There is a lot of information about their beliefs and practices and I appreciate being able to study them. Frances
Back to discussion of Foot Washing, and into Primitive Baptist: from columnist Ken Thomas -- TOPIC: PRIMITIVE BAPTIST SITE Paragraph: Anyone descended from Primitive Baptists should check out the website at www.primitivebaptist.org and review some of the information placed there. One can study the questions and answers about what that faith's principals are, find information on some early churches, and many early ministers, and lots of other information. A good many Primitive Baptist church records can be found in the Georgia Baptist Historical Society Collection at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. One can also request microfilm from that collection on Interlibrary Loan at your central public library. Find them on Google by searching for "Georgia Baptist Historical Society Depository." They have material on all branches of Baptists in Georgia. TOPIC: CLAYTON LIBRARY, HOUSTON Paragraph: If you are traveling west, one of the great genealogy collections not to be missed is that at the Clayton Library, 5300 Caroline St., Houston, TX 77004. Check the website at www.houstonlibrary.org/clayton to learn about their vast collection and hours. They have material from all over the nation and were named one of the top ten genealogical libraries in the nation. twb's NOTE: our Houston Public Library site has undergone a change and apparently not quite ready. The above will say something like "page not available" and direct you to "home." At the home page of HPL you can use the online catalog --- put in Primitive Baptists and in location, scroll down to Clayton. You will find a number of books that you might like to be aware of. I failed to mention one other book in my previous list. I had it out on my desk to look up Foot Washing and failed to do so. "Encyclopedia of Religion in the South" edited by Samuel S. Hill. 1997 University of Mercer Press, Macon GA < There are many free-will or Missionary Baptist churches in Applachia. ... Some of the free-will churches are similar to the previously mentioned Calvinistic churches in terms of preaching style and the Foot Washing service. > <General Bapstis hold to the doctrine .... These Baptists practice open communion, and a diminishing number of them practice Foot Washing. > < The Anabaptists have many heirs in the modern church, such as the Amish, Mennonies, Quakers, Plymouth Brethren, and Church of the Brethren, who stress various motifs of primitivism, whether pacifism, footwashing, holy kiss .... > < Seventh-day Adventists practice ... The Lord's Supper is a memorial observed quarterly, often after a foot-washing ceremony in anotehr room. ... > < Union Baptist -[ NC TN VA MD KY WV PA] ... They are Calvinist and have three ordinanes: baptism, comunion, and foot washng." Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston, Texas
Down in Floresville (Wilson Co)? Barbara, is your book still available; cost? I've started a history for the Steep Hollow Baptist Church, Steep Hollow Community just outside of Bryan (Brazos Co). My husband and I will be buried at the Steep Hollow Cemetery (annual association meeting next Saturday). I did the application for the cemetery to be designated as an official Historic Texas Cemetery (marker on order) and I was in hopes the Church might be interested in applying for a historical marker but the answer was "not now" even though the church is well over 100 years old, so I'm going ahead with a small booklet. At last year's Angelina College Conference (12th, 2008), one of our visiting faculty was Alive I. Davidson, CG, from Lakeland, Florida. One of his topics was "Was Your Ancestor A Primitive Baptist?" We frequently have session by various speakers on phases of research into religious groups - but none this year! Two references Alive shared was "Primitive Baptist Outline" at http://www.primitivebaptist.info/ and "Primitive Baptist Library in Carthage,Illinois" at http://www.olpbc.com/ Some really interesting information! Several books in my private library that are probably available through interlibrary loan if not in your church library, and if a serious student, worth the investment: Texas Baptists, A Sesquicentennial History by Harry Leon McBeth. 1998 Baptist General Convention of Texas A Texas Baptist History Sourcebook, A Companion to McBeth's Texas Baptists by Joseph E. Early, Jr.2004 University of North Texas Press, Denton. A History of Texas Baptists Comprising a Detailed Account of Their Activities, Their Progress and Their Achievements by J.M. Carroll. Baptist Standard Publishing Co, 1923. 2 vol. reprint by The Baptist Standard Bearer, Inc. #1 Iron Oaks Dr, Paris AR 72855 http://www.standardbearer.org/ Wikipedia has an article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_washing - just "google" foot washing practice and a lot of sites come up! I'm still here and have written a book of history for the Sutherland Springs Baptist Church as well as the community. If anyone needs information, perhaps I may have it. Mrs. Barbara J. Wood In a message dated 6/4/2009 10:34:11 A.M. Central Daylight Time, treviawbeverly@comcast.net writes: I note that there has been no action on this list since 2007! Well, partially my fault because I did not find it before and contribute. I am a Baptist by choice and very interested in Texas Baptist history .. Let's hear it! How many of you are still out there??? I've been active low these many years with a regional genealogy conference. In past years we've had sessions on church records for genealogical research. Even though we are not offering this particular topic this year, perhaps some of you will still find something of interest ...... Foot washing was an ordinance in Primitive Baptist Churches. In my grandparents' church in Arkansas, it was, along with communion, held after the regular morning service. Often there would be dinner on the ground after the morning service, then, if my memory serves me correctly, they went back inside to observe their ordinances. I have never known of footwashing being observed in a "missionary" Baptist church. Frances
There are 341 items about Agee in my gazetteer. The building in which Agee Baptist Church was located still stands, but it is not used as a church. The Sunday School rooms (which were built later than the church) were moved to the Heart of Texas Baptist Camp and Conference Center at Lake Brownwood when the church closed. The Agee post office did not last long: The Agee community and post office were named for Dr. William Absolom Agee: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gazetteer2000/a/agee/agee_wm.htm Agee Community http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gazetteer2000/a/agee/agee.htm The Agee post office was in existence from 1897 to 1905 and it was located in the home of Dr. William Absolom and Narcissa Agee. Mrs. Agee was the post mistress. After the Agee's home burned they went to live at Carlton with a daughter and her husband. Dr. Agee died April 2, 1923 at Carlton. His death certificate is here: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#collectionId=1320964;p=recordResults;searchType=standard;searchId=21563552215286730000;surname=Agee;eventPlace=Hamilton%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States;placeId=2866 Mrs. Agee spent her last days in Hamilton where she died in 1935: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gazetteer2000/his_fbc/stats1i.htm Her son, Marion Lee Agee died in 1954 and his wife Selma died in 1972. Their son Marion Paul died in 1988. I do not know any descendants of the Agees who remain in Hamilton County. Thank you so much for pointing to this site! I had no idea about it, and what a surprise to immediately find a reference to AGEE --- my husband's line! Huguenot, of course, and I chaired the first Agee family gathering in Richmond in 2007. Plans for the 2008 here in Houston fell through due to hurricane "Ike." I'll post this on the Agee Family mailing list; I'm sure there will be some interest. I may have missed it in my quick glance, but I don't think I saw anything about Hamilton Co post offices. You might like to add from Jim Wheat's Postmasters & Post Offices of Texas, 1846-1930 the Hamilton Co listing: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txpost/postmasters.html or at least point to Jim's site. First one up is AGEE: Agee, Narcissa C., 11 Sep 1897 Discontinued 14 Oct 1905; mil to Fairy. Time consuming but a brief history on each of the postmasters would be really nice! Wish I had your talent - your work is awesome! Trevia
The history of Baptist Churches in Hamilton County, TX, has been part of my gazetteer for a long time: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gazetteer2000/hcba/hcba_hba.htm and http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gazetteer2000/his_fbc/begin.htm There have been many exchanges on this list. One of the more recent one was about the observance of footwashing in Baptist churches. Linne, Any chance you have a Huling Bowles? Born around 1890 or so? From Austin, Texas, and spent some time in Alaska in the Army? Linne, I'm sure you've been doing your general genealogical research on the families you listed. I'm not familiar with any of them so no news there. I understand about doing Texas (or any state) research long distance. If you find when/where they died and are buried you may be able to locate the chruches/religious faith they were connected to. However, the Brazoria County Museum has a wonderful site at http://www.bchm.org/ The folks over there are really wonderful. Some great databases online . cemeteries, Austin's Old 300, etc. You may not be familiar with The Handbook of Texas Online http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/ Wonderful article about Rev. Rufus Burleson and if your families were in any of his churches, I'd be looking for what kind of records he kept and where I could find them. There is also an article about James Shackleford Gillett and a Roswell Gillett is mentioned - same family? There are a number of good books on early Baptist, among one of the best and most enjoyable reading is Z. N. Morrell's "Flowers and Fruits in the Wilderness" written in 1872. Reprints are available. You may want to try Interlibrary Loan at your local library. Two general articles that might help you are available at Clayton Library Friends - http://www.claytonlibraryfriends.org/ Click on Resources - Archived Newsletters - then Rising Toward Heaven: Church Members and Their Records and to Faith of Our Fathers: Church Denominations ** problem with this one but I've notified the webmaster - Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston, Texas
Sandra, Too early to expect much response; so far you, Linne, and "Weathers" who contacted me direct. I can see a lot of uses that should help researchers. There are some neat websites out there that we can't all know about each, so that would be one thing. We might consider 'unofficially' a "directory" of churches throughout the state that are 100 (?) years old .. to list perhaps the name of the church, location (city/county), and founding date. Hopefully some would be encouraged to write a brief history if one has not been prepared (most genealogical collections would welcome such an offering) - and may even work toward an official Texas Historical Marker if it does not already have one. There are some neat brief marker text histories on the THC Atlas website .. and if one is of particular interest, the marker application and narrative can be obtained from THC for nominal copy costs. http://www.thc.state.tx.us/ Click on Atlas, then go into whatever county of interest. Linne, I may be able to help with your question - I'll look at it later this evening and try to reply before bedtime. Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston.
I'm here. Have been for many years. Not much activity, but I'm still hoping. I'm still looking for any of my ancestral names: Benjamin BOWLES and Betsey JEFFRIES Henry SMITH and sisters Harriett, Elizabeth and Sarah GILLETT Sylvester BOWEN and Almira WILSON BOWLES Rev. Roswell GILLETT and Martha SMITH BOWLES Jesse P. BOWLES and Ann HOBSON and Mattie NORWOOD Henry S. BOWLES and Martha Ann WHITE Elizabeth J. BOWLES and Robert INGRAHAM/INGRAM Mary Jane BOWLES and Joseph FESSENDEN Julia BOWLES and John SAMPLE Sarah M. BOWLES and Elijah MAXEY Many of these families started out from Barren Co., KY in about 1814 and went to MO to sail down the Mississippi to New Orleans and then to Brazoria by 1827. I'm not certain how many of these couples were Baptists, but I know for sure that Betsey Bowles and her daughters, Julia and Fannie, were recorded assisting the Rev. Rufus BURLESON in establishing Baptist churches around Texas. Most of the Bowles were ardent Baptists. Rev. Roswell GILLETT became well known in Baptist circles. The families listed above are recorded as having land in Anderson, Bell, Bee, Bastrop, Brazoria, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Lee, Milam, Montgomery, San Patricio, and Waller Counties. If anyone has any information on any of the people listed above or their descendants, or can point me in a good direction for finding Texas Baptist records, I would appreciate it. Living out in California, it's not easy for me to find the Texas records that might exist. Linne Bowles Gravestock -- Always looking for Boles/Bowles, Jeffries, Adair and Trott
Hi Trevia, I subscribed to this list a long time ago and don't recall any activity. Maybe we could use it for history of different churches around the state.
