Unfortunately, New York passengers did NOT get their names changed when they entered this country. If there was a name change, the holder of the name had to apply to a Court to get the name changed. By the way the name Tweed is a Norwegian name and Tviet would translate to Tweed/Tweet. I am interested in Tweed's that went to Lowell, Massachusetts. Seems they were there at the first Census taken in 1790 and most Tweeds that came thru Boston, settled in Lowell, but I can't tie them to our Tweeds. Also, my Tweeds came from the area of Ballymoney, Antrim, Ireland. Are your Tweeds from the southern states or west of New York?
