    1. Re: Celia Tweed wife of Thomas Tweed
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Tweed , Sams Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iQTBAIB/143.1 Message Board Post: You are correct. Celia Sams Tweed was the wife of Thomas Tweed. They are my great-great grandparents. Celia was the daughter of Gabriel Sams. Her mother's name escapes me at this time but her maiden name was Hamtpon, I do believe. Thomas was basically beaten and starved to death buy the Confederates, over the course of about 1 year, 1862-1863. After his capture, the Confederates burned the home, killed the livestock and drove Celia and the children across Union lines at the point of starvation. Celia died in 1883. An interesting sidenote..... Mrs. Ruth Tweed Landers, 84 years old, lives next door to me. She told me a couple of years ago that Matilda Tweed (1881?- 1970) told her years ago that Celia was, quote, "The most beautiful woman to ever walk the waters of the Shelton Laurel." That is quite a compliment to survive 120 plus years after Celi's death, who was about 62-63 years old at the time of her death, by a woman who was only two years old at the time! I am guessing t! hat that folklore was handed to Matilda by older ancestors.
