Dear All: Alastair MacIntyre is the editor and publisher of Electric Scotland website. He has been working to clarify the status of the Clans. The note below is from his Newsletter published today. The revised web site is now up and has referrals to the various clans and some of the related septs are also shown on another section. There is also a link to the Burkes Peerage that gives a free thumb nail sketch of many prominent Scottish people. This site is now the closest that I know of that takes into account the legal status from the Lord Lyon court, the approval of the Scottish Council of Scottish Chiefs and the pending status of the others. Here is the latest Clan review from Alastair at www.electricscotland.com. You can also subscribe to his weekly email magazine here as well.. Please forward to other lists and groups that may be interested. Best Regards John A Hansen Board and List Admin CLANS ----- Done another update on our Clan Menu. I've now classified the clans as... ***** = Officially registered clans, with Clan Chiefs, that are registered with the Lord Lyon Court. **** = Officially registered clans, without Clan Chiefs, that are registered with the Lord Lyon Court and hence are described as armigerous. *** = These are clans that are in the process of applying for registration. ** = These names are ones that we have some information on and may be septs of other clans or simply a name where several have got together to try and form a clan society. We may further sub divide this classification if we find a means of doing so. I will be doing some ongoing work on this classification business and am commencing a search for information on clans that we don't yet have information on. You can see the updated clan listings at http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/clanmenu.htm

Dear All: There is a IGI search program for the UK. This has been introduced yesterday. I checked it out today and it works fine. It allows you to search the IGI by parish and returns ALL the IGI records for that surname in that Microfilm. It covers both birth and marriages. It obviously took a lot of work to develop and cross\ index the IGI records by Parish in a database. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page Best Regards John A Hansen Admin
Dear All: Here is a real early warning of a new Virus fresh from the testing Labs. You already know about not opening attachments etc from people you don't know etc etc. The format of this new worm has been in development for some time and you have all heard me talk and write about it. So don't open any URL's that you don't know. The AV software programs may be late as well in getting updates out quick enough. But at least update your AV software 2 to 3 times a week for the next few weeks. I do mine daily. There is a scheduler on most AV software and I just have it set to automatically download the latest every night at 3 am. While the first pass here may only be a "show off" piece I have seen vicious programs with deadly payloads that really do some damage and obtain key info that is then forwarded to foreign locations. The first wave will probably be labeled xxxxx.cool.html So watch for the "cool" part first. Later the url will carry other words or links that are designed to appeal to you in some way. Our genealogy hobby will be wide open. Be suspicious. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that there isn'tsomeone out to get you. Being paranoid about virii may keep you out of trouble.. This wave of virus attempts may be around for awhile. Best Regards John A Hansen -----Original Message----- From: Drew Smith [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 5:10 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: New MSN Messenger Worm Heya folks, Ok, let's try this again, with a little more time spent on my side. ;) Tried to submit this earlier today, but got bounced for attaching the worm source to the message. So, this time, I'm attaching a URL instead, where you can go get the source if you want to see it. This worm *ripped* through our office today - it's one part flaw in Microsoft's security model and one part social engineering; it is a NON-MALICIOUS worm, but it effectively proves the concept, and I don't foresee more than a week or two before there's a nasty version. We've been calling it the "cool worm", after the original filename, "cool.html". I said *ripped*. I meant it. 40 people affected/infected in under 30 seconds. That's the dangerous part, I didn't even have time to go to the other room to let coworkers know what was up. The worm shows up as an MSN Messenger message that says "Go To http://www.masenko-media.net/cool.html NoW !!!". The user, obviously, clicks the URL, which takes them to the site, where the malicious code sits. The code opens the MSN Contacts list, then messages every contact with the message "Go To http://www.masenko-media.net/cool.html NoW !!!". Think about that for a second. Anyhow - the worm does nothing nasty, but the source to the (now down) masenko-media.net site also mails the hostname and user agent of the connecting host to "[email protected]". Looks to me like an experiment that got loose from the lab, but it demonstrates a *dangerous* flaw. Why can a webpage open the contacts list in the first place? What other hooks does MSN Messenger provide? Can you harvest email addresses from a contact list? Too many scary implications. Worm source (with a few important lines removed, so that it doesn't start popping up *everywhere*), available at: http://riotnrrd.com/cool-source.zip Cheers, - Drew. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This list is provided by the SecurityFocus ARIS analyzer service. Dear All: There is an emerging interest in looking at the possibility of developing a database of the DNA markers for the Scottish Clans and Septs. The Scottish clans are very unique in that the Clans have been identified and family relationships tracked for hundreds of years. Some Clan family have documented histories stretching back to before 1000 AD ( and some back to 500AD) . So this leads to some interesting possibilities of identifying current clan and sept family members and determining if the Scottish ancestry line can be identified. Some have cautioned: be careful because you may find out that you are not who you think you are :-). Non-paternity events were as frequent then as they are now. There is also an interesting mailing list here on Rootsweb : [email protected] It turns out that a couple of factors make this a very interesting study for the Clans to be involved in. A: The mtDNA passes down from mother to daughter only. So the matriarch of the family becomes clearly identified and traceable. Scottish history is one of the few in the world where female lineage was often documented. Note that non paternity events don't occur in this DNA since obviously the mother knows her daughter is her offspring. B: The Y DNA passes from father to son. There we can again provide a clear line of potential coordination between the written documentation and the DNA markers. There are some other fine points of the DNA identification and you can find out a lot more in the archives of the mailing list. Anybody that is really interested in participating should please reply to me at the email address below or reply to this message post. We need about 6-10 people for each group to make it meaninful. I will made arrangements to have this study posted as well. Please send or list only your surname , contact info and potential Clan association. I don't want to clog up the archives with a lot of "me too" emails and board posts. :-) Any comments or questions are appropriate to post. Someone will then contact you for further details and how to proceed. Please note there will probably be cost of some amount for the DNA test. I don't know what that amount is for the test but it is probably about $250. My initial survey indicates that we will want the 23 marker DNA test to get some definitive answers. I expect to get more details next week. Please feel free to pass this message along to other mailing lists and boards that may have a high per centage of Scottish Clan or Sept descendants. Should be an interesting database over the months and years :-) Was that my Chief ??? Best Regards John A Hansen [email protected] Clan Board and List Admin

Dear All: I generally don't endorse commercial products in these postings. However this one is close enough to Clan genealogy research that I thought it was worth while. Dear All: This Post was created by Sue Swiggum from the The Ships List. She has a creative writing ability and creates these really wonderful posts every 3 months or so. She has gracefully agreed to let us publish her memo. I'd like to see her publish a book on the subject but until then the rest of the admins will just continue to plead with her to let us send her memos to our lists :-). I've modified her memo slightly to cover our particular situation as compared to her list. So thanks again Sue. Best Regards John A Hansen List Admin Subject Lines -- Subject Lines -- Subject Lines -- Subject Lines -- plus ... a few tidbits and gentle reminders which you might find useful. Regarding "Subject Lines" .... you'll see my other comments for Digest members below. Do include your surnames ( in Caps) in the subject line > location > dates and then include them again in the body of your message where you give the full details of your ancestor. If your details are sketchy at this point, then just put what ever you do have; sometimes the most minor of details can often provide the breakthrough. Subject lines such as "HELP" may not get you any HELP ... "PASSENGER LIST" may not get you any PASSENGER LIST ... "NEW SUBSCRIBER" may only get you a HELLO if you are lucky. The reason is not because you are being intentionally ignored, but rather because our wonderful members with the resources to help you are VERY busy, so they scan the subject lines looking for a subject about which they have knowledge. Sometimes they have no time to open every message and peek to see if they can help, so do yourselves a big favor by drawing the right kind of attention to yourself and giving an assist to those with the resources and knowledge who are able to help. If you are making a general or other emigration/immigration inquiry, take a moment to read your own subject line first, to check if it is meaningful for your query. Put as much info in the subject line as can be reasonably done. Try not to _begin_ your subject line with numbers, as the robot handling the list mail sometimes rejects those. ps. A list member (who is one of our big helpers) has also suggested that when any of us respond to a message with an inappropriate subject line, that we alter it slightly. I do this sometimes, but on a busy day I sometimes overlook this step. ++ Answering: If you able to answer another member's query, then please share that answer with other list members ... UNLESS, the reply is very specifically directed to the poster [such as, "we have a Bill Smith living next door ... could he be yours?"] If your answer will be of interest to other list members, such as ship movements, dates, ports, microfilm numbers, "how-to" research immigration/emigration related sources etc., etc., then please share that with the list. ++ Quoting: When responding to a query on the list, by all means quote the original message so that we ALL know what you are talking about. BUT, edit <snip> the original message to just illustrate the part which you have answered. On my recent roll call for instance, the actual post for the roll call should have been snipped. ++ <snip>'s: As mentioned above, "snipping" [editing] is recommended, to save from excessive "quoting" and wasting band-width by filling up the Digests. List Mode members, also <snip> the 'tag-lines' from the original post, and refrain from sending any "piggy-backed" messages with your post unless they follow the thread. ++ Forwarding Mail: When forwarding mail [Fwd:] because you may have mis-addressed the original or you are sending a repeat of an earlier query, take a moment to edit all the unnecessary 'headers' and taglines etc. They take up too much room, and serve no purpose. Some may just "delete" rather than paging down to find your message. Consider copy/paste into a new message, rather than "Fwd:". ++ CAPS: Do not write your message in "CAPS" [Capital letters]. Messages/Queries written ALL in CAPS tend to be difficult to read, for most of us. In the "world" of cyber-space, CAPS are considered the equivalent of SHOUTING! Save CAPS for ship names, surnames, or anything else you wish to stress. (CAPS are okay from vision-impaired members) ++ WebPages: Do not "quote" an entire web page, rather, POST the URL and give a brief description of the site, and an explanation of why you found it useful. ++ Citing: When quoting any information found elsewhere, eg. ... a web page, a book, a document ... always cite (give credit) to the website, and/or the author, the publication etc. Apart from being common courtesy, it can also cover many possible copyright infringements when you quote an excerpt from an original document/publication. Content from a public document is not copyright, but the compilation of those facts can be. ++ Subject Lines: These are SO important as this is your "headline" to attract the attention of those who may be able to help you. Digest members ..... remember to change the subject line to reflect the topic. If you send a subject which says ... Re: Surname-D Digest V02 #xx ... then this is meaningless, and may go unread. Also, include your year of interest. ++ Thank you: Please NEVER forget to send a thank you to someone who has answered your query. It is so nice to send some appreciation to those who have helped you. These should be in the form of a PRIVATE message, but I won't mind if you have been totally overwhelmed by the number of responses, and you wish to thank everyone by means of the list. :-) It only takes a moment, and shows that you don't take any contribution for granted. ++ Reply Most often any info request etc should be posted to the list [email protected] Do not reply to me as list admin because I then just forward to the list. Please reply to the List even if you are on the Digest [email protected] ++ Not A Subscriber. You will sometimes get a "Not A Subscriber" notice. These are posts that get bounced to me because the poster is sending from a different address than they are subscribed with. I forward these to the list. The address that you are registered with can be just slightly different, sometimes the ISP inserts a extra server or other identification in the email id. To check your own address, send your self a email and look at the headers to look at your "from" address. Make sure your email program inserts this address in your post and then subscribe to the mailing lists of your choice. ++ Virus alerts Please just send these directly to me and keep the discussion off the mailing list. ++ Signature Blocks Signature Blocks and Lines are your address at the bottom of your message. No signatures lines over 4 lines. The VLF will automatically put anybody on moderate that can't seem to get their sig line down. Large sig lines clog up the search engine and the archives. VLF is a patented system from Piglet (the Listowners admin) and she rents it out for a royalty fee per use. VLF = Very Large Flyswatter to keep posters in line :-) ++ Be Nice No Flames, No Selling, No Religion, No Politics These are all interesting and emotional items. Trying to admin a list under those circumstance just takes to much time from my Genealogy and my Grandchildren :-) Hope all this helps. Best Regards John A Hansen [email protected] List Admin
Dear All: Generally speaking a roll call does not do much for the genealogy of our list. However, once a year seems to be an appropriate timing to dust off those brick walls and see where things stand. I know from the various emails that I receive that many of you have made great strides this year due to new databases on line and new web sites etc. So what I propose is as follows: A: Post the brick wall ancestor and other ancestors that seem to have been created to give you a a hard time. Some ancestors of mine have covered their tracks so well, it must have been deliberate :-) Please use the standard format in the subject line for everyone's benefit. This standard has been used and was created in order to allow many people to skim the subject lines and then determine if there is any interest or should the delete key be used. So one ancestor per message. The format is : SURNAME > location > time Note the surname is in Caps. The new search engines here in Rootsweb are coming on line and are working well. Then give the pertinent details in the message body. B: No signatures lines over 4 lines. The VLF will automatically put anybody on moderate that can't seem to get their sig line down. Large sig lines clog up the search engine and the archives. VLF is a patented system from Piglet (the Listowners admin) and she rents it out for a royalty fee per use. VLF = Very Large Flyswatter to keep posters in line :-) C: Also post any great web sites that you've found that really helped. I may put some of these in the taglines for future reference. Lets Go!
