According to my records, William Tuttle b. 1607 married Elizabeth Matthews b. abt 1610 in England, not Elizabeth Williams.
Although the name "Matthews" is widely seen as the maiden name for Elizabeth, wife of William Tuttle, I think that it is WRONG. Lou Tuttle addressed this subject on this list last year. His message is repeated here. ------- Subject: Maiden name of Elizabeth Tuttle Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1999 22:02:38 EDT From: LouTuttle@aol.com To: TUTTLE-L@rootsweb.com Comments on Dora Smiths (c1001@freenet.buffalo.edu) various Tuttle Pages: These comments are addressed to the subject of a maiden name for Elizabeth Tuttle, the wife of the immigrant William Tuttle (1607-1673) A group of us spent over a year and a modest amount of money trying to verify the maiden name of Elizabeth about ten years ago. 1. We agree with Dora that the Elizabeth Matthew (and its various spellings) refers to another family that remained in England and never came to America. The IGI and The LDS Ancestral File both contain this as a maiden name, but we believe it completely wrong. It keeps turning up in other sources and probably is copied from the IGI. 2. The name Southcutt also turns up in the Ancestral File and in the IGI, but there is no proof existing that we could find that it is correct. 3. We paid researchers in England to check parish records, but no useful information was ever provided after some 20 hours of research. If anyone has any proof of a Maiden name for Elizabeth please let me know - she is a direct ancestor and it would complete my family tree of Tuttle Families loututtle@aol.com -------------------------- David L.
