Marjorie, thanks for making the connection I am Sybil Montgomery of the Darlin (1810) line. I am cutting and pasting my research on Daniel; s/o Darlin (1810); s/o Darlin (1780); s/o Isaiah (1746 of NJ), etc., etc,. etc. "MRS. ETHALINDA TUTTLE, a well known and highly respected lady, was born in Delaware County, Ind., March 27, 1831. Her parents, William and Tamer (Thornburg) Daugherty, were both natives of Clinton County, Ohio, but came to Indiana at an early day, locating in Delaware county, where Mr. Daugherty entered 160 acres of government land, from which he developed a home, and upon which he resided until his death at the advanced age of eighty-seven years, having been born in 1783. Both himself and wife were members of the Christian church, and were among the well known pioneers of this county. The marriage of Ethalinda Daugherty with Daniel Tuttle was solemnized June 24, 1851, from which date until the present she has been a resident of Mount Pleasant Township. Daniel Tuttle was born in Butler County, Ohio, but came to Delaware county in early manhood, where for a number of years he was alternately engaged in farming and working at his trade of carpentering. Late in life he abandoned agricultural pursuits, and purchased a number of lots in the village of Reed station to which place he removed and in which the residue of his years were passed. Mr. Tuttle's birth occurred December 14, 1831, and he was called away by death October 13, 1892, his remains being laid to rest in what is known as the Hawk Cemetery. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Protestant church, with which he had been identified for a number of years, and was not only a christian in name, but his daily walk was a practical exemplification of the genuineness of his religious profession. He earned the reputation of a devoted husband and kind father, and those who knew him best bear testimony to this true worth as a citizen and neighbor. The following are the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle: Rebecca, wife a A. Hayden; Mary E., deceased; Thomas, married Clara Conard; Lydia C., deceased; Marion, deceased; Silas Franklin; Monroe (deceased); Viola Florence, wife of Charles Mahoney; John William; and Sarah wife of C. Ensley. Mrs. Tuttle, like her husband, is a member of the Protestant Methodist church in which she is highly respected for her christian character." 1 Other researchers have noted the union of Ethelinda Daugherty and Daniel Tuttle.2 3 In the 1870 they had six living children: Rebecca, John W., Sarah J., Darlin T., Viola. F., and Silas.4 However, they had other children who did not reach maturity. A search of the Hawk Cemetery records indicates that some of these children were:5 10/26/1862 Lydia C. 1 year 2 days 8 months 4/23/1864 Mary Elizabeth 6 years 2 days and 8 months 6/7 /1867 Infant daughter 6/17/1867 2 Infant daughters 9/15/1867 Marion A. 3 years 7 months 19 days 9/17/1876 Silas Franklin 8 years 11 months 4 days (mentioned above in 1870 Census) Two other children have been mentioned in the literature but were not found in the Hawk Cemetery records. They are Wilhelm John b. 9/1852 and Monroe b. 1864. Both were born in Delaware County Indiana.6 Additional information on Sarah J who was noted in the 1870 Federal Census could not be located. Of the many offspring of Ethelinda and Daniel, it appears that only four survived to adulthood: Rebecca (Mrs. Amos Hayden), Darlin Thomas (mentioned as Thomas in the above Helm article), John W. and Viola Florence (Mrs. C. Ensley). Ethelinda and Daniel Tuttle's daughter, Rebecca is this researcher's great grandmother, Sybil Montgomery, Ph.D. of Penn Valley, PA ; e-mail sybildocmont@aol.com 1 Helm (1864). I almost fell out of the chair when I saw Rachel Tuttle in the email title line. But, it is the wrong Rachel Tuttle, but I think it is a cousin. Your Rachel Tuttle is probably the decendent of Darlin Tuttle of New Jersey (B. abt 1780). He was the s/o Isaiah Tuttle (Rev War Vet). Isaiah had 3 sons Joel (mine), Amos and Darlin (that I know of). Darlin went to Ohio, Joel to Northern WV, and Amos to SW PA. I know most of the info on Joel, very little on Amos or Darlin. My Rachel is the granddaughter of Joel. The first names in the family are often the same (William, Isaiah, Joel, Jesse, John, etc.). This is a branch of the New Haven Tuttles of 1636. Rosanne
Hi - I guess I didn't respond to the early post about Rachel, since I didn't have a Rachel to match. I am descended from Isaiah (the Valley Forge Isaiah) through Amos, but to the best of my knowledge there is no Rachel in that line. I don't have a Rachel in what I have on Darlin's line, but there are two other researchers on this list that might help you with Darlin. Good luck. Hello, This is my first time in this list so don't know if these names have come up before. I am looking for parents and siblings of Rachel Tuttle born 27 Oct 1820 in Ohio died 03 Sep 1861 in Shawnee Co Kansas. She married 28 July 1839, Rosmond Long at Marion Co. Ohio By 1842 they were in Henderson Co. Illinois and in 1856 or 7 moved to Shawnee Co Kansas. Rosmond died 18 Jan 1860. They were parents of 9 children. Someone said her Father might be Almon Tuttle but I have found nothing. Any help very much appreciated. Nancy John
I'm still looking for Floyd Riley Montgomery b. 1884 somewhere in IN. He married Ethel Anna Hayden in 1904 in Delaware Co IN and had three living children: Laura, Joseph, and Hester. Ethel Anna was the daughter of Rebecca Tuttle and Amos W. Hayden who resided in Delaware County all of their lives. Any leads would be appreciated. Sybil Montgomery
Hi Dennis Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. Boy since I retired I have no time. I am always on the go. I am leaving for San Diego and will be gone for a couple weeks. Need some cool ocean breeze, 109 next week here. Love the heat, but it is nice to feel the cool Pacific and see that wonderful California green. Our GGGGrandfather was the same, Jeremiah Tuttle, b. Jan 1778 Goshen, NY. UE Loyalist patented 400 acres Matilda township, Dundas Co. Ont Can. NY. His son Jeremiah Tuttle was my GGGrandfather and his son George Tuttle was my GGrandfather. My Grandmother was Emma Esther Tuttle, b. Steptoe Butte Washington Territory. She was orphaned at 14 with four younger brothers and sisters. A incredible lady, she at 14 moved the children from Washington Territory then Washington State to Petaluma, CA. where George Tuttle, her father had family. I have a hard time imagining a young girl in 1894/5 after the death of her mother making that trip with the four children. I know that George Tuttle had at least three sister and a two brother living in the Petaluma, CA. area. Candace (Daicy) Tuttle Fraser, Anna Tuttle Densmore, Ella Tuttle Beckeley, Elanson E. Tuttle and Cyrus Tuttle, Cyrus's Son had the Tuttle Drug Store in Petaluma, CA. Upon arrival in Petaluma, CA. the children were split up among the family. As close as I can figure it Emma left Petaluma between 1899 and 1901 for San Francisco. Emma was married four times, Mark Benson, Joseph C. Fraters*, Joseph Heffernan, and Chris Clause. The records on the first two marriages were destroyed in the San Francisco 1906 earthquake. Which Emma was at with her two children George Benson and Leslie Frater. I was told that after the earthquake they spent two weeks living on the beach in San Francisco with the two children. My Grandfather was Joseph Fraters, * Joseph spelled his name four or five different ways he was Portuguese, yet on my uncles birth certificate he listed color or race as Spanish and German? His father, Isaac Frates was born in Madeira. He left during the unrest 1840/50 and arrived in California . He married Domecia Silva. My mother Ethel M Fraters Heffernan married a George Kelly. Hence my I sent a copy of the message to Betty Swanson and her son Gary. Betty father was Mark Benson, Emma first child. What I find most surprising is that Jeremiah (b. Jan 1778)Father in- law was John Bull. Well Ill close for this morning and get some sleep its 4:00 AM and I have to get up early 6:30, it is a yard work day, hahahaha. Please keep in contact. I am rebuilding a VW camper, have three old VW, hope to finish it by next summer and do Canada, have to chase history. Looking for the children and/or parents of Elsie P.Tuttle born in 1881 near Reed Station, Delaware Co. IN. She married Albert Moore in Delaware Co, IN in 1898. She lived in Mt. Pleasant Twp., Delaware County, IN until 1920 and then moved to Alexandria ca.1923. She died 1923 and buried at Hawk Cemetery in Yorktown, Delaware County IN. Because she was born after 1880 census and married before 1900 census she cannot be found in the census data. I can't wait for the completion of the Rootsweb 1890 census substitute. Thank you for your time and I hope I will be able to open your message tomorrow. I built my computer so it is like me a little strange, works only when it wants to :):):):).. I am amazed at finding you all. My grandmother talked very little about her family. Being the oldest girl she had a full plate in the 1880/90 in Washington Territory. Dennis thank you again
Hi William Thank you for the response. My grandmother Emma Esther Tuttle, b 08 Oct. 1881, Steptoe Butte, Washington Territory. Her Father was George Tuttle b. 09 Feb. 1845, Prescott, Ont, Canada. George was the second child of Jeremiah Tuttle and Sarah Esther Monk. Jeremiah fathers name was also Jeremiah Tuttle b. 16 Jan 1778, Goshen NY, his wife name was Clarissa Powell b. 15 Nov. 1779. My Grandmother father George Tuttle married Christine K. Hoffenstter b. 04 Jan 1855, Little Rock AR. George and Christine were married on 04 Jan 1876 (Christine Birthday) in Petaluma CA. George and Christine had seven children, both died within a year of each other in 1896. My grandmother (age 16) was charged with escorting the younger children from Oakesdale, WA to Petaluma CA. The trip in 1896, I often wonder how it was made, I know how it shaped her life, courage, resiliency, charity, heartbreak and love. The children were sent to relatives in the Petaluma area. I have been unable to obtain information on the distribution of the children. I did met the two older brothers Ed and Frank Tuttle as a child of seven. Wonderful warm men who had basked in life and their enjoyment of it filled my eyes. The memory of sitting on the porch with them as if yesterday I will not forget. It has taken me sixty years to realize that the stock whence we came from was stout. Again thank you for your email. I do have more information if you need any more on the early family Tuttle history.
