My great-grt-grt-grt grandfather was Jeremiah Tuttle, so far as I know. All I have on him is that he was from Connecticut and I have that he had ten children. Elijah was my great-grt-grt grdfthr and one of Elijah's brothers was Jeremiah. I have Sarah Merkley as Jeremiah's (the 2nd's) wife. This information was sent by a 2nd cousin once removed who lives in Iroquois, Ontario, Canada. I'm not sure how he came upon the name Merkeley, but I know he wasn't definite about a lot of his information. Please, let me know if this is of interest and what else you might know. I found the following TUTTLEs in the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society webpage at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/S-T.htm Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society has a number of Sedgwick County, KS marriage affidavits in their library. (Some of the affidavits from the 1870's and 1880's are missing from the files even though the names appear in the index). MHGS has copies of the marriage returns for 1882 and 1883, then 1885 through April 1913. These contain the same information as the affidavits along with when the marriage was performed and by whom. 3. Hello, I am new to this list and I do hope someone can help me out a bit. I am actually researching SMITH's in Berkshire Co. MA, CT and NY. Some time ago, it was suggested to me that I check the TUTTLE GENEALOGICAL Page. I was very new to research at that time and somehow I lost the URL. If you know what I am talking about or if you are related to SMITH's in the above areas, I would love to hear from you. I really would appreciate the URL for that site! Thank You, Margaret in NV

    1. [TUTTLE] USE THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH YOUR FAMILY TREE
    2. Pat Ratcliff
    3. I have no dealings with the following, but thought it was some good information for anyone working on genealogy. From: The Kim Komando Show Free Electronic Newsletter Thanks for being a Komando commando! Here's where to sign up: http://www.komando.com/media/newsletter KIM'S KOMPUTER KOLUMN: USE THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH YOUR FAMILY TREE There's never been a better, or easier, time than now to strike out on a journey to research your genealogy, thanks to the power of the Internet. While the Web is where you're headed in search for your roots, the place to start is right at home. Write down all you know and can find out about your family, starting with your parents and working backward to uncles, aunts and grandparents-as far back and as wide as your living family tree can be traced. Don't forget to seek out more distant relatives who may be able to fill in lots of blanks, and be sure to track down any family "sourcebooks." It was common practice years ago (and still today in many families) for generations of records to be kept in a bible or other prayer book. Photo albums or scrapbooks can also prove to be a treasure trove of genealogical information. At some point, you're going to get stuck. When this time comes, get online. But before you start gumshoeing around the Web, get your computer set up to organize the information you'll find (and already have). For this, turn to any one of the many software programs available to get you started creating your family tree. If you are serious about it, try Sierra's $89.95 Generations Grand Suite 8.0 (www.sierra.com) <http://www.sierra.com)> , with 31 CDs full of information. Or you can't go wrong with the $99.99 Family Tree Maker Collector's Edition (www.genealogy.com) <http://www.genealogy.com)> , either. This 42-CD package includes immigration and vital records as well as actual family trees. For Windows genealogy shareware with lots of bells and whistles, try Cumberland Family Tree (www.cf-software.com) <http://www.cf-software.com)> . For Mac users, Reunion (www.leisterpro.com <http://www.leisterpro.com> ) offers similar powerful tools for organizing your family tree. Now you're ready to do some online investigation, so first, pick an ancestor to research. It's easiest to start with someone who was the closest to a living relative, and then focus on an event in his or her life, like birth, marriage or death. A good place to make your first stop is Ancestry.com, where you can do a free search on the Social Security Death Index (www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/ssdi/main.htm) <http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/ssdi/main.htm)> . You'll also want to check out state birth and marriage information, and that's where a company called Vital Check (www.vitalchek.com <http://www.vitalchek.com> ) can help. This web site sells copies of birth, marriage, divorce and death records, and also has state-by-state listings of the proper agencies to contact to order certificates directly from the source. If you only have a fragment of a location to work with, go to http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html <http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html> and look up any place by features (like hospital, school, beach or park), state or territory, population or by a generic query. If you've exhausted the basic vital statistics, you're ready to head into deeper water and look at military, immigration, church and cemetery records. Whew, this could be the start of a serious hobby! Military service records can be located at the United States Internet Genealogical Society's Military Collection (www.usigs.org/library/military/index.htm) <http://www.usigs.org/library/military/index.htm)> . Here you'll find name, rank and hometown for soldiers in specific outfits, as well as extensive links to veterans of U.S. wars, from the Revolution to Vietnam. For immigration records, one of the best resources will undoubtedly be the online records of Ellis Island (www.ellisislandrecords.org) <http://www.ellisislandrecords.org)> . Other immigrant options are the GeneaView listing of Ships and Passenger Lists (www.geneaview.addr.com/resources/pass_ship.html <http://www.geneaview.addr.com/resources/pass_ship.html> ) and the extensive links organized by country at http://members.tripod.com/~khuish/nonusa.htm <http://members.tripod.com/~khuish/nonusa.htm> . For church records or a variety of specialized searches, look at the resources offered at www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org> . Cemeteries can also be resources of great historical goodies, and Cemetery Records Online (www.interment.net <http://www.interment.net> ) has a database of listings from the U.S and all across the world. You might also want to take a look at JewishGen (www.jewishgen.org) <http://www.jewishgen.org)> , a site with extensive burial records, Holocaust name lists and other significant information. If you or one of your ancestors was adopted, this can put up a real hurdle to overcome. There are online resources to help. Start at Vital Record's adoption resources links (www.vitalrec.com/links3.html) <http://www.vitalrec.com/links3.html)> , or the Adoptee Search Center (www.adopteesearchcenter.org) <http://www.adopteesearchcenter.org)> , a registry site devoted to helping match up adopted children and their birth parents. No matter how hard you try or how many links you search, a crucial piece of your family's historic information could still elude you, and then it may be time to bring in a hired gun-the professional researcher. You can find a qualified investigator by looking up "professional genealogy" at your favorite search engine. Since this can be an expensive route, make sure to check out his or her credentials. Also, contact past clients to see if they were satisfied (you should ignore any "pro" who refuses to provide credentials or won't give any references). Researching your family history can be informative and entertaining, and it can also be a great way to get the whole family involved on a fun project. Just remember to be patient, use all your available online resources, and share what you find! 1. [TUTTLE] Lewis TUTTLE bur. Andersonville Prison mystery
    2. http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/oddgraves.html Please visit the above URL and read about the mystery. Andersonville Dove is a Mystery "Rows and rows of identical Marble headstones mark the graves of almost 13000 Union soldiers who died at Andersonville Prison, but one stands out. The headstone is like the others, except it has a stone dove on top. Headstone number 12,196 in section H of the National Cemetery marks the grave of L.S. Tuttle, a corporal in Company F of the 32nd Maine regiment. His death in Andersonville stockage on November 30, 1864, resulted from diarrhea, a common cause of death in the crowded Confederate prison. He was only 29. Only the barest facts of Tuttle's life are known. Tuttle was born in Saco, Maine. Records show he was a cooper, one who makes or repairs wooden barrels. He had 2 brothers in his company and regiment. Tuttle and his brother David ( who died of scurvy at Andersonville and is buried beneath a plain headstone in grave number 12,322, section H )were captured in a contested crossing of the North Anna River in Virginia, May of 1864. His older brother, Loren , was probably the luckiest of the three. A Confederate rifleman shot him in the shoulder, which allowed him to be discharged and avoid the possibility of capture and incarceration at Andersonville. Records do not show what happened to him after the Civil War. Lewis Tuttle`s military records indicate he was six feet tall, fair skinned, and had light hair and grey eyes. He had a wife named Lydia Ann and two daughters, Clara Ella and Addie Cora. For years, people have been curious about the dove. The National Park Service continues their search in finding the answer. The dove has been on the marker for many years, but again, no one knows exactly when it first appeared. There have been many theories as to who put it there and why, but the dove is still a mystery........ " Janice Buchanan

    2. This Abraham Tuttle is a Rev. War vet, but his pension file is not greatly informative regarding his family. If anyone is researching this individual, I'd like to hear from them. 1. [TUTTLE] Lawsuit
    2. Adina Watkins Dyer
    3. Found this in the Lafayette, Indiana (Tippecanoe Co.) newspapers re: a lawsuit brought by my gr.gr.grandmother Mary Francis Tuttle Downs against the estate of her uncle, Philip Ensminger: Lafayette Weekly Courier July 9, 1878 The Downs-Ensminger Case. In 1845 or '46 Mr. Ensminger and his wife (note:this would be Mary Moore), who were comparatively poor, were living on a farm in this county; Mrs. Ensminger was then about forty-four years of age, and was without children. Her sister, Mrs. Tuttle (the mother of the claimant, Mary F. Downs), who was then living with her husband at Attica, Indiana, had several children, and among them the claimant, Mary F. Downs, who was then about eight years of age. The Ensminger and Tuttle families were very intimate, and visited each other once or twice yearly. In 1845 or '46 Mr. Ensminger and his wife, when on a visit to the Tuttle family at Attica, in pursuance of some contract or understanding they had between them, and the father and mother of Mary, took the child, who was then about eight years of age, home with them to keep and raise as their own child. Up to the point as we understand it, the facts are not disputed; the dispute relates to what the contract between Mr. Ensminger and the parents of the child was. Mrs. Downs claims that Mr. Ensminger not expecting to have children of his own, agreed with her parents that if they would release all their claim on the child and gave her to him absolutely as his own child and permit her to live with him as his own until she was of age or married, that he would at his death, make her his heir and divide his property equally between her and his wife, and that it was solely and alone upon this condition that her parents gave her up. The defense deny that any such contract was made. This forms the only issue between the parties. It is admitted that Mrs. Downs lived with Mr. Ensminger from the time she was first taken away until she grew up and married, and the she was during all this time, subject to his exclusive direction and control the same as if she had been his own child. It is also true that Mr. Ensminger loved her as his own child, and intended to give her a liberal share of his estate. But she married against his will, and for this reason alone he willed all his real estate to others, not giving her a cent. Mrs. Downs at once began suit; she at first limited her demand to $10,000, and the jury gave her a verdict for the full amount. On account of some technicality of law Judge Vinton, upon the motion of the executor, Mr. Royse, granted a new trial. The plaintiff then increased her demand to $60,000. A second trial was had in this county, but the jury disagreed - eleven of the jury being in favor of granting her a verdict for the full $60,000. The defense now prayed for a change of venue from this county, and the case was sent to Warren County. Last week the case was tried at Williamsport, before Judge Davidson, and the jury, after being out but about two hours, gave her a verdict for the full amount of her claim.

    1. [TUTTLE] TUTTLE in Ohio or New York
    2. It appears that 2 women named TUTTLE, sisters, married men named HASTINGS who were brothers of my gggrandfather. Mary TUTTLE b 1822 New York Samaria TUTTLE b Nov 28, 1822 New York Also had another sister Martha Shepard TUTTLE b Nov 28, 1832 New York Today I found an obscure reference that leads me to believe that these women were in Ohio and possibly were married there. What I have... Father: Daniel TUTTLE born c 1800 in New York Mother: Unk CARPENTER born c 1800 New York Martha was married in Ohio (I do not have a town) so I am grasping at straws that possibly the family had moved there prior to that time. ANY information on this family would be appreciated. Jo Hogle

    3. We may have corresponded before. I have finally proven that my William C Tuttle born 1816 and married Emeline Coleman and lived in Trumbull Co., Ohio is the son of Chester Tuttle and Elizabeth (Betsy) Cowden from Oneida Co., New York. I don't have death dates for Chester and Elizabeth for sure yet. Chester died early on so maybe Elizabeth remarried. Her brother Alexander J (Probably Joseph A from other sources) Cowden removed to Trumbull Co Ohio and I think her brother Truman did also. I am just trying to connect to other Tuttles.
