Author: Selkie1970 Surnames: Turns, Turnes, Torrence, Rosser Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.turns/32.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I come from Aaron Turnes/Torrence who was born in Campbell Co, Va in 1813. His brothers were Samuel, William, and a much older brother (?) James. James went to KY. Aaron died in Appomattox Co, Va. Interestingly, Aaron and his wife, Mary Abbott, had five sons, Pleasant Andrew, Henry Clay, George Samuel, Alfred Early, and James Thomas. I come from Henry Clay. The three older boys fought in the Civil War. After the war, Henry Clay Turnes (Torrence) married Louise Watts Rosser. In the 1870 census, we find them, not in Appomattox/Buckingham Virginia, but in Logan KY, along with her father, David Rosser and other children. The Turnes and Rossers moved back to Virginia, to the Appomattox/Buckingham area. I always thought that maybe they moved to Logan, KY b/c there were relatives there, but it seems James died long before they went. Maybe they were in touch with children? -Kimberly Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My Turns I believe was Torrence before it changed sometime before the 1780's. Wish I could help more...but will continue to research. The original name is Torrance and I trace the oldest member to Campbell county, Virginia born abt 1832. Jackson "Jack" Torrance was possibly a Civil War soldier Colored Troops. I think he died in Logan county West Virginia abt 1917. He was a coal miner. The death cert is listed under Turns and can be found online. He is very close with a White Joseph Torrance and a Cardwell family. Any info please reply, thanks so much. Toria Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
