While most of the time transcription errors and misunderstandings are frustrating and confusing, there are rare occasions where they can actually be helpful. I was looking for descendants of a great-uncle known only to my living relatives as "Maney." Many, many searches using that name had been fruitless until I found a census from his childhood that listed the eldest child as "Mary Ann." Since I was certain I knew all of the children in the family, "Mary Ann" could only be "Maney." Lo and behold, when you say the female name out loud, it sounds like "Marion." Turns out that was Maney's real name--and I was off and running. Just an encouraging thought for the day... Ruth Ann
