    3. It may work that way in modern hospital's; but 100, 200 years ago it didn't. A lot of babies were delived by midwives evern 60, 70 yeas ago, I was delivered by my mothers foster mother, and they still got my name all wrong. Harold

    3. Yes, I realize that. But most midwives, especially in the past, were not nurses. Even today we have a large number of lay midwives in the US. Most midwives in the past did not have formal medical and/or nursing training and many were not very literate. Add that possible level of illiteracy to parents who may not known how to spell well either and you have what can lead to confusion with name spellings. Another thing I have learned in my research is that here and in Europe names were not "standardized" (ie., the spelling of names) until fairly recent times. In an article covering my great grandmother's obit, her maiden name was spelled three different ways. In a grandfather's death certificate, his name was spelling two different ways, as it was throughout his life. Even he spelled it two different ways--I guess depending on the mood he was in or something like that. Sometimes I got the feeling in my research that the spelling of the name was not as important as being given a name in general. JMHO....
