    1. [TURNER] Lucy Turner died Dec 1859 Caswell Co., NC

    3. Lucy Turner appears on the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Caswell Co., NC as dying in Dec. 1859 at the age of 86 years old. This mortality schedule listed her place of birth as NC but the 1850 Census shows her with place of birth in VA. There is a will recorded in Caswell Co., NC Will Book S, (1858-1863) for a Lucy Turner which was apparently filed in 1860. Does anyone have access to this will or have a good abstract of this Will? I think (looking for proof) she is Lucy Pleasants, widow of James Turner whom she married on 5 Aug 1793 in Caswell Co., NC. I further think that James Turner died before 1830 when Lucy shows up as head of household in 1830 Census of Caswell Co., NC in age bracket 60-70 years old. In 1840 Census she is still listed in the 60-70 age bracket. I believe that Lucy's husband James Turner is often mistakenly confused with another James Turner who was the son of Henry Turner who died 1809 in Caswell Co., NC. Records suggest strongly that he is a different James Turner entirely. James Turner (son of Henry Turner d. 1809) was born in 1756 in Culpeper Co. VA and died in 1835 in Williamson Co., TN. His first wife was Sarah (last name not known) who didn't die until 9 Aug 1809 (Bible Record) and he was having children by Sarah all through the time period 1780- 1807 so he clearly was not married to Lucy Pleasants in 1793. After the death of Sarah in 1809, he married second to Catherine White on 3 Sept 1811 in Williamson Co. TN and had one more child named William born in 1814. James (son of Henry d. 1809) gave a deposition regarding his brother John Turner who was killed in 1830 in Williamson Co. TN by his slave. In this deposition, he talks of the children his brother John Turner had by Sarah Kimbrough which were named in the will of Henry Turner (d. 1809) to receive John's share of the estate at John Turner's request. These girls names were Frances/Fanny, Nancy, and Delilah. John's wife Sarah Kimbrough was deceased before April 1817 as they are also named in the estate papers of Sarah Kimbrough Turner's father John Kimbrough. Thus, it is clear that this John Turner is the one who married this particular Sarah Kimbrough. John Turner later took up with Catherine Cheeks Butler and lived with her for about 7 years before marrying her. He had two daughters by Catherine before he married her: Minerva Turner who married William Hunter and Levitah Turner who married Josiah Wynne. After he married Catherine Cheeks Butler, they had one legitimate child: John Jackson Turner. I am including this information in this posting in an attempt to try to begin to get the Caswell Co. NC Turners sorted out correctly. There are some Family Trees posted on Rootsweb which appear to have combined and terribly mixed up the Caswell Co., NC Turner lines. We very much need to get these families sorted out to determine which of the lines in Caswell Co., NC were related and which were not related. If we can get male Turners directly descended from the Caswell Co., NC Turners in the Turner DNA Project, we will have a good opportunity to be able to begin to sort them out. It will take a combination of the records plus the DNA tests but it will truly be a huge step in the right direction. If you are researching these lines and especially if you descend from the lines and know of male Turners that are from your group, please please help out on this. Gail R.
