    3. Further results have been posted for the Turner DNA Project. We now have 212 members who have purchased kits to document their line of Turners. Please go to the project's website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~turnerdna/ Click on the word "Results" on the left of the screen for the latest results chart. Remember, do not bookmark the results chart because the URL for it will change each time it is updated. Bookmark the home page and then each time access the results chart. I tried to look back and see when I last posted info on where we are and can't find them on the search engine. I feel sure I posted updates of results this year but maybe they have been removed. If anyone still has a posting by me around May, I'd love to have a copy. My webmaster who does a terrific job for us (a volunteer who I greatly appreciate) was extremely busy this summer and got behind. So, I may miss some new things that have occured since then. We should be now up-to-date on results I've received from our testing company and they are all posted on our website. Posted since April were the following new lines by their known oldest ancestor: Kit #54998 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Martin Turner who was in Mecklenburg Co., VA ca 1778 and then moved over to Caswell Co., NC where he died in 1828. This line matches a longstanding Kit #20523 whose oldest ancestor was Joseph Turner who by oral tradition came from the Petersburg area of VA to SC after the Revolution. They are in our Group 21 (color is Raspberry) on our results chart. Kit #47808 -- Haplogroup G2 -- George Turner born c1817. It is not known for sure where George was born but his family settled in New Zealand. No matches to date. Kit #N23881 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Came into the project from the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project. He has only 12 markers tested and has not sent me his lineage. He matches several different groups at 12 that we know form different unrelated families when more markers were tested. This person needs to upgrade to more markers before we will really know which group he belongs in. He has not been assigned to a group because of lack of lineage information AND doing only 12 markers. Kit #N25170 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Originally came into the project from the NGS Genographic Project and then upgraded to 37 markers. Oldest known ancestor is Edward Turner who married Julia Starkes. They lived in St. Louis, MO. This is a biracial line but the paternal Turner line is clearly white indicating that the original negro blood came into it from a maternal source. Kit #51229 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- The oldest known ancestor on this line appears to be Franklin Turner b c1806 in Culpeper Co. VA married to Lucy Morgan. He was later in Rappahannock Co. VA but this is thought to be a result of a county formation rather than actual move. He has a match at 12 markers to Kit #27650 but without more than 12 markers tested on Kit #27650, it cannot be determined if there really is a match. Kit #55344 -- Haplogroup I -- The oldest known ancestor is John Turner b 1872 who located in St. Francois Co. MO. His ancestry is still unknown. No matches to any other Turners to date. Kit #50187 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is Samuel Turner b c1782 NC married Charlotte Morgan. This kit has been assigned to our Group 7 Pumpkin Group. Kit #62932 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is John Turner who died 1761 in Isle of Wight Co. VA. This kit has been assigned to our Group 7 Pumpkin Group. It is probably going to be the "key" to figuring out how those Group 7 members are related and where they came from. I believe it also may be the very best example of how DNA can blow open and change previously assumed connections between families of the same surname living in the same general geographic area. The Isle of Wight and Southampton areas of VA had so many Turners and it is now appearing that some earlier identifications of relationships may be inaccurate. Kit #55155 -- Haplogroup R1a1 -- Oldest known ancestor is William D. Turner b c1822-32 who married Eliza Defreeze. He lived in the Dawson and Floyd Co. area of GA. He is placed within our big Group 10 Light Blue group and is that group that is believed to all descend from Richard Turner who died about 1742 in Caroline Co. VA. Kit #53133 -- Haplogroup R1a -- The oldest known ancestor on this group is Robert Turner b c1737 who married Mary Thornborough/Thornburg. She was Quaker and records for some of this family appear in the Quaker records of Guilford Co., NC. This Robert Turner was a Loyalist who was killed during 1778. After Robert died, Mary and most of her children removed to Jefferson Co., TN. There is a tradition that Robert changed his name. However, his early birth and the fact that he left many Turner male descendants should help anyone whose Turner line descends from him. No matches to date within the Turner surname. Kit #N17529 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor on this one is probably Fielding Turner b 1706 Northumberland Co. VA d 1794 Loudoun Co. VA. He appears to be pretty good back to Fielding L. Turner who married Sally Mitchell in Green Co., KY. With his result in hand, it confirmed the DNA haplotype for Kit #11893 that we know is back to Fielding Turner 1706-1794. They now form the basis of Group 23 Faded Blue. We have an additional test kit out that also should be a third means of of confirming this result. Kit #55866 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is William Turner b c1717 N. Ireland immigrated into Charleston, SC on 12/31/1767. This family settled in the Chester/Fairfield Co. area of SC. This is one of the REAL success stories for DNA testing. The new testee descends from James Turner, son of William Turner through his son William Turner who married Sarah Henson. With the perfect 25/25 match to this line and combining records that the lady researching the line had in Mississippi plus records I had from Fairfield Co., SC, we were able to make a iron clad case for this connection. Without the DNA, we would probably have never found which family in SC her John/Jonathan Turner belonged. As is always the case, DNA PLUS regular research is the key. Kit #51591 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is William Turner b c1848 in GA who married Elizabeth Varnadoe in 1869 in Irwin Co., GA. I suspect William was married first to Zilpha Turner (a possible cousin?) in 1865. I believe that he and Zilpha had one son Joseph b. 1866/7 (Kit #50053) and then he married Elizabeth. What is absolutely fascinating is that this line clearly matches three other lines (Kits #37689, #36308 and #1105). Kit #1105 is from an immigrant ancestor Alexander Turner b 1803 in County Tyrone, Ireland. Both the other lines were early on in Pennsylvania. The common ancestor is likely in Ireland. These kits form our Group 18 Lime Green Group. The William Turner b. c 1848 in GA may well be related to a Joseph A. Turner b. 1815 in GA who settled in Irwin Co. GA. He had married in Laurens Co. GA to Sarah Tucker and is almost certainly connected to the Clements family from Darlington District, SC before their relocation to Laurens Co. GA. A descendant of this Joseph A. Turner is very much needed to test in the project to compare to this group. Kit #62717 -- Haplogroup R1b1c -- Oldest known ancestor confirmed is Dempsey Fennell Turner b c 1832 probably in Holmes Co. FL. He is thought to be the son of James C. Turner who married Mary "Polly" Fennell. This group came out of SC and the oldest ones appear to be Alexander Turner, Stephen Turner, James Turner born in SC. Two of these probable brothers married Fennell girls. They too may have come out of Laurens Co. GA. I had wondered about a connection to the Joseph A. Turner. At least one other male Turner is needed to test who is a descendant of either Alexander or Stephen Turner of this group to verify the DNA signature for Dempsey Fennell Turner. Anyone who is researching this group of Turners is strongly encouraged you to find a male Turner to test. Kit #62398 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor James Henry Turner b 1835 Watertown, NY d 1910 Clackamas Co. OR. His possible father is Jeremiah Turner who was from MA. This line did not match the Humphrey Turner line of Scituate, MA. Kit #63484 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is Robert Turner b c1738 died 1824 Clover, York Distr. SC married Rosannah McCarter. This kit helped clarify the likely modal haplotype for this Group 8 Green. Because of some old (and possibly not correct) research done on this line which said this group came from Harford Co., MD to SC, we are currently getting someone from the Harford Co. MD family that was claimed to test as a comparison. Should be interesting. Kit #63661 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor Edward Turner d 1709 St. Mary's Co. MD coming down through Samuel married Lydia Dent, Edward married Eleanor Wilson, William married Rhoda Dent, etc. His line ends up in Rowan Co., NC where Milicent King Turner was enumerated on the 1840 Census. With his paper trail as well as this DNA results, he clearly falls into Group 12 Olive. Kit #59081 -- Haplogroup I -- Oldest known ancestor is Joel Turner b c1825-1828 who resided in Marion Co. SC. Joel Turner fathered an illegitimate child by Sarah Kirby. This child kept the Kirby name but the DNA would be that of Joel Turner. Joel is usually enumerated next to a Robert Turner b c1789-1792 in SC. Joel and Robert Turner were listed as mulattos on the 1860 Census as were a number of other Turners there. They lived in the area known as the Catfish area. They could be descended from Patience Turner who was married to John Turner as this group is documented by depositions to have mixed blood. The fact that the DNA is clearly not that expected for African descent supports the fact that if there is negro blood here, it came in from a female side. Kit #20420 -- Haplogroup I1c -- Oldest known ancestor John C. Turner b c 1845 Marion Co. SC. Mother is Rachel Turner but the father is not known. Rachel Turner is living next to Joel Turner and Robert Turner discussed in above kit. It is not known if Rachel was a widow. The DNA for Kit #59081 and for #20420 do not match. Kit #64563 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is Thomas Turner b est. 1660s died 1744 in Frederick Co., VA coming down through his "son" Roger Turner born in Chester Co. PA and died in Surry Co. NC. With the results on this kit, it has been possible to form Group 25 Pale Yellow. Additionally, with this result, it has been possible to move Kit #28328, which had been suspected to belong to this group, to it. These three results with a paper trail that links them to Roger Turner and then back to Frederick Co., VA affects the earlier research on the line of the next kit and group. Kit #65145 -- Haplogroup R1b -- Oldest known ancestor is Thomas Turner b 1734 d 1820 Madison Co. KY. Spouses were Catherine Smith and (2) Nellie Dill. This Thomas Turner is thought to be the son of a John Turner who married Sarah Williams. Previous research had linked this line to Thomas Turner who died 1744 in Frederick Co., VA. However, the DNA does not support that connection. Descendants of this Thomas Turner are now grouped in Group 26 Cinnamon and includes Kits #65145 and #18323. We need to find descendants of John and Sarah Williams through their sons John and Philip to test in the project to see if they match these two descended from John's purported son Thomas Turner. Kit #66027 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest confirmed ancestor is Martin Lee Turner b 1801 GA married Hattie Haddox in Wilcox Co. AL. His DNA places him in our large Group 1 Salmon Group and he no doubt connects to the Hancock Co. GA Turners that came to GA from the Eastern Shore of MD shortly after the revolution. Martin Lee Turner is thought to be a son of either a John who married Sarah ?Lee or perhaps Samuel Turner who married Sarah ?Lee. However, Martin is living near a Levin Turner in 1840 and both owned land in very close proximity. Kit #66418 -- Haplogroup E3b -- Oldest ancestor is John Turner b 1805 TN died 1870 in Cocke Co., TN. This is our first E3b in our project. We would very much like to find descendants of the Turners who were in Jefferson, Anderson, and Grainger Co. TN to test to compare with this line. We suspect a connection to the family of Paschal/Pashal Turner who lived in Grainger Co. TN who later went to Benton Co. AR. This could be a big breakthrough for Turners researching that area of TN to find related families. Any Turners with roots in that area or even in VA who turn out to carry the E3b haplogroup would certainly have a common ancestor. Kit #67421 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Oldest known ancestor is John Turner b estimated 1756 probably in Scotland. Married Helen Imray. Family members lived in the Lauder, Scotland area. Later, the testee's line went to New Zealand about 1904-1905. Presently tested only to 12 markers, the DNA is a perfect 12/12 match to our Group 8 Green group that was in York Co. SC. At least one of this group is confirmed to a James Turner b c 1738 who immigrated into Charleston SC in Feb 1768 from N. Ireland. If more markers are tested for this kit and they remain a close match to this group, this could well connect these two lines back in Scotland. Kit #66679 -- Haplogroup E3a -- Oldest known ancestor is Lawrence J. (?James) Turner b 1874 in New Jersey according to the 1920 and 1930 Census records. He married Hattie Feimster. Settled in the Boston, MA area by 1920. Birth places for Lawrence's parents were not consistent on the two census years that he has been identified. One said his father was born in LA and mother in the Bahamas. The next said his father was born in Ohio and his mother was born in LA. Family oral stories conflict with some indicating a connection to "the islands." Hattie seems to be from NC. There is a large group of Feimsters living in Iredell Co. NC area with few in other areas. New findings and formation of groups: Kit #50103 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- Major Lewis Turner. This man simply cannot be found on census. He is believed to be born about 1830 in TN and then went to Texas where he married Sarah Jane Snider. I suspect she was a second wife. He was killed in Texas before 1899 when we know that Sarah had remarried and had a child by her second husband--a Raines. This man's DNA is a perfect 37/37 marker match to #20792 Thomas Turner b 1743 Newry, Ireland who immigrated into Charleston in early 1767 on the Earl of Hillsborough. Thomas settled in Old Pendleton Co. SC in the part that became Anderson Co. We know that some of Thomas Turner's children went to TN. Kit #28491 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- John Walter Turner b c 1843 MS d TX married Martha. After upgrading this kit to 37 markers, I have moved him into our Group 7 Lavender Group. It is not known for sure how he fits into this group and the connection could be back in VA rather than in SC where several of his matches are known to have originated. Because this particular group has what is known as the very very common Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype, a common ancestor for them could be quite distant in time. Kit #17828 -- Haplogroup R1b1 -- James Turner b c 1765 VA married Anna Debell. With more folks tested which helps in determining where mutations may have occurred, I have moved this kit into our Group 7 Lavender Group. This decision is based not only on the DNA results but also the regular research that puts this family in the same area of VA and associating with the same families to that of George Turner who is the progenitor of several of our Group 7 members. In all likelihood, George Turner and this James Turner have a common ancestor right there in Virginia. I know this is long and detailed. Just felt it was necessary to get everyone caught up. The project continues to grow. Please, if you have a well documented line to early Turners in the colonies, won't you please get a male Turner of your line to test? It would be a huge help to Turner genealogy research and your line could well be the key that is needed for some of us still struggling trying to get through or around that brick wall. Gail R.
