how strange! I have a cousin who died in the, I think 1940's late or early 50's and her name was Mattie B. (initial only) her parents were Aaron Webster Turner and Aby Childress, who raised her 3 children after her death, they lived around Orange Co. I don't know in this case, but in my line of ancestors it is. Martha was listed as Mattie in a lot of the census records.
Though not of this family at all, I can say that Mattie is a common nickname or dimuative for Martha. My grandmother's name was Martha and she was regularly called Mattie.
