    1. Re: Elijah Turners in 1840 Census Spartanburg Co., SC
    2. Gail R. Blancett
    3. This is in reply to Jean Wigglesworth's posting wondering if her Elijah Turner married to Ann Bennett could be one of the three Elijah Turners on the 1840 Census in Spartanburg Co., SC. I checked with a man who has done extensive research on the family of Elijah Turner Sr. of Spartanburg. Elijah Turner Sr. is on the 1840 census on page 99. He is 60-70 years old. He had a son Elijah Jr. who was married to Cynthia. This Elijah Jr. is the one on p. 138 of the 1840 Census of Spartanburg Co., SC He was a 30-40 year old male as was the woman who was probably his wife. Children were 2 M U 5; 2 M 10-15. This couple went to TN by 1850 but are not the couple in Cocke Co., TN. The third Elijah Turner in the 1840 Census of Spartanburg was on page 155. This Elijah is son of Mathias Turner (son of Elijah Sr.). This household makeup shows Elijah as 20-30 years old as is wife and 1 F under 5; 2 F 5-10. I think this rules this particular three out. We have this group documented in the Turner DNA Project Kit #8538. Gail According to census records, my GG grandfather, Elijah Turner (c1799-c1865), was born in South Carolina, as was his wife, Anne (Bennett) Turner, and their 5 children. They moved to Cocke County, Tennessee sometime after 1839 (the date their youngest child was born in SC) and before the 1850 Cocke County, TN, census was taken. I have not yet been able to trace this family any further back, however, I have found 1830 and 1840 census records for Spartanburg County, SC, for an Elijah Turner which shows the same number of family members with the same sex and ages as my Elijah Turner family. If this family sounds familiar to anyone, I would sure love to hear from you. Jean Turner Wigglesworth Mason, OH [email protected]
