Sarah-- Where in SC did your Turners come from? Mine came from Marlboro Co. SC and went from there to Henry and Fayette Counties in GA. My Turners were Melungeons, also known as "Black Dutch." Were your Turners unusually tall? My gr-grandfather Miles Allen Turner (b. 11-2-1859 Coweta Co. GA/d.8-8-1940 Polk Co. GA) stood 6' 8" and wore size 16 shoes. I have several photos of him, also one photo of his father Peter Turner (b. ca. 1834 in SC). Peter is sitting down in the photo but also appears to be quite tall and long-legged with classic Melungeon features. Peter Turner married Frances Barrentine, b. ca. 1836 Marlboro Co. SC. They married 1857 in Fayette Co. GA. Peter was son of James Turner and Anna Mitchell. --Lamar Wadsworth
Lamar, I'm not absolutely sure these are my Turners and I don't know where they lived in SC but they did live in Henry County in GA. One of my Turners was very tall, well over 6 foot. I don't know how tall his father or his grandfather were. However, none of his siblings were extremely tall. I'm not sure what classic Melungeon features look like but I do have photos of several of my Turner family, even one of the oldest proven ancestor, William Beverly Turner, b. in GA, died in Cobb County, GA, buried in Powder Springs Methodist Cemetery, Powder Springs, GA (Cobb Co.) -----Original Message----- From: turner-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:turner-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of lw.sou.ry.steam@juno.com Sent: Tuesday, December 26, 2006 7:20 PM To: turner@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TURNER] Andrew Turner, b. about 1800 in SC,lived in Oglethorpe a nd Henr...
