This may not be news to everyone but there is info out there to the contrary on the James Turner whose widow was Patty Turner. By 24 December 1789, this James Turner was deceased. Patty Turner with Ashford Napier, Thomas Hale, William Turner and Richard Melton as surety made bond as Administrix of James Turner's estate. 20+ pages of photocopied Franklin Co., VA court records indicate this to be true. I have not transcribed all of the pages but there are at least 5 minor children and the estate would not be completely settled until the youngest was of age [21 yrs. old]. On 2 July 1796, settlement was made with the following legatees: Kinzey Coats [h/o Joany Turner] for 27 pounds 5 shilling & 6-1/2 pence James Turner for 27 pounds 5 shillings 9 pence Thomas Overstreet [h/o Bathsheba] for 26 pounds 16 shillings 10 pence William & Jonas Turner for 54 pounds 11 shillings 1 pence William Creasy [h/o Patty or Polly?] for 27 pounds 5 shillings 6-1/2 pence Eliza/Elizabeth Hunt for 27 pounds 5 shillings 6-1/2 pence The remainder of the account was payment of accounts/bills except: Patty Turner rec'd 132 pounds 10 shillings 3 pence for her dower. The balance from the sale of the estate was 23 pounds 13 shillings 4 pence. This was from Will Book 1, pp. 114-115. >From Franklin Co., VA Marriage Bonds: Kinzey Coats married Joany Turner. The bond was dated 13 April 1789 and surety was James Turner. Although the online data did not give James' relationship to Joany, it is possible that this James was her father; however, James [s/o James who died bef 24 Dec 1789] was not a minor in January of 1790. Also...Jonas Turner was surety on the marriage bond of William Bates to Elizabeth Harris [d/o John Harris] on 7 Jan 1793. Since Jonas was a minor in Jan 1790, he must be of age by Jan 1793. In my way of thinking [which may or may not be correct], Jonas would have been born about 1771 or 1772. So...who was the mother of these older children? Was this James Turner married 3 times or are we mixing up the James Turners? William Hunt made bond as the guardian of Jonas Turner in January 1790. Thomas Hale along with Joshua Rentfro and Moses Greer as suretors made bond as guardian of Jesse, Polly/Patty [not sure which], Admire and Delilah, minor orphans of James Turner Dec'd, on 7 Feb 1791....Will Book 1, p. 49. I'm not so sure that the James Turner to Jane Anderson marriage fits this James. Can anyone help sort this out? Brenda Carroll
