Let me throw my 2 cents worth in to the discussion on Tarner, etc surname. I am a Turney but belong to the Turner list. Why? Because my Swiss Thuny ancestor who arrived in Pa in 1741, then to Shenandoah Valley of VA - he went thru a lot of name changes getting from Thuny to Turney. And one of his brothers in PA ended up as a Dorney. Early records, because these people spoke German and the clerks doing the writing spoke only English, my ancestor is sometimes listed as Turner. Also Tunis, Ternay, Tarner, Torny, Dorney, etc. We once listed about 30 spellings of the name in early records. I know for a fact that in Shenandoah Co va marriage records Michael Ternay - turns out to be Michael Turner married to a Murphy Michael Turner - is my Michael Turney married to a Matheny. So.....I always watch for anything close to my name. Try to tell the Dorney family that they are Turneys, the aren't. They chose to use Dorney, the original Swiss version was Thuny, but it was something else in France. What I am saying is, I have seen Tarner spelling in searching for my family, I will go back and see if I can find them again. I can tell you it would probably have been 1740s in Pa, or 1749-1780s in Shenandoah Valley of VA. I always wondered if Tarner might be Turney. Mary
