Abbie I was speaking of the surname Turney not Turner. for Turney - Ternay, Toney, Tony, Tunnis, Tunni, Tunis, Ternay, Tornay, Dorney, Dorny, Turnay, Tournay, Tourni, Torney, Dorne, Dorna, Detornay, Diturnni, DiTurna, Thune, Turnee, Turni, Durni, Turny, Dornig, Turnah, Durnay, Tourni, Durney, Dorni, Thurney, Turnet, Tournet, Turnney, etc. there may be more, but those are ones close to hand. some of my sources: 1. ships lists - name given 3 times for each person and usually spelled differently each time for the same man - A PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL LISTS OF ARRIVALS IN THE PORT OF PHILADELPHIA FROM 1727 TO 1808 is one of the sources, there are a few more for ships lists 2. 18th Century Emigrants, The Western Palatinate, Volume II (Annette Kunselman Burgert, Birdsboro, PA.: The Pennsylvania German society, 1985) 3. Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., PA records 4. Huguenot Refugees in the Settling of Colonial America (The Huguenot Society of America, 1985) 5. Tax lists 10. Marriage records for PA and Shenandoah Co VA. (this is where the Ternay is a Turner, the Turner is a Turney) 11. I even finally found War of 1812 military records for one of my Turneys, with Turner on the outside of it. Apparently he had trouble when he applied for pension, 3 times they said there was no such records, but finally found them. and I could go on. What I am saying is this, in those early records - especially before about 1800 you have to be ready to give names such as Ternay a second look when looking for Turner. And you have to be willing to watch Turner list even if your name is Tarner. I did find one of my Turneys in 1750s Maryland by watching the Turner list. Mary
