My Turney family was in Frederick, Dunmore, Shenandoah Co Virginia from 1750s to 1787. 1762-1787 they lived next to Abraham Bird near Woodstock, Virginia. Now in these early records I have found two cases where Turner and Turney names are mixed up. Incorrect marriage record SHENANDOAH COUNTY VIRGINIA Marriage Bonds 1772-1850 compiled by Bernice M. Ashby page 9 TURNER, Michl. --- Mathaney, Elender. Sept. 19, 1785. Bondsman: Danl. Mathaney. this one is Michael TURNEY born 1760 in VA, the son of Peter and Eva Turney of Woodstock VA area. Daniel Matheny lived near them. Michael Turney and his brother Daniel Turney married two daughters of Daniel Matheny - Susan and Ellender. In 1787 the Turneys and Mathenys all sell their Virginia land and move to KY. (in same area where Turner family also moves.) Hampshire County Va (WVA) land record Under the name TERNAY 9/3/1787 Michael TERNAY and wife Phoebe sell to James Murphy: (both of Hampshire Co.) 1/2 acre lot in town of Romney recorded 9/13/1787 Witnesses: Alex Ruthven, Rub. Holiday, Ralph Humphreys, John Murphy. This is Michael Turner with his Murphy wife. They end up 1787 moving to KY. They are from the Maryland Turner Murphy family according to some Turner researchers. Hampshire County is now West VA and the area is not that far away from Woodstock VA where my Turney family was at this time. So please be aware that in early records, Turney and Turner were often mixed up. Or you get Ternay, Tunni, Tunnis, etc. which could be either one. Some Turney researchers in 1930s working on DAR papers got the families all mixed up. I am sure they found some of the Turner info and put it into the Turney family. They have the Turney family married into Murphy from Maryland, going to Culpepper Co Virginia. What I have found on my one Turney is that he arrived PA 1741, moved into Northern Neck of VA and then Shenandoah Valley. 1787 was the move to KY for some, 1770s three of them moved into Eastern Tennessee. One was Eve Turney who married John Teeter. Maybe that will help some of you. I have also gotten some info on a Darby Murphy - he had two grandsons in his will who were Turner. If that is your line, let me know. I don't have a lot but glad to share. Mary
