Several years ago I located the following family in the 1860 census of Gasconade County Missouri: John Turner 42 M Farmer $200 $150 England Sarah 40 F England America 13 F England Maria 10 F England Columbus 8 M Missouri Rebecca 6 F Missouri John 4 M Missouri Josephine 2 F Missouri I was looking for the family of my great grandmother: MARIA ELIZABETH TURNER (SARAH L. WINN, THOMAS, GEORGE) was born November 02, 1843 in Unknown County, MO, and died July 16, 1932 in Pulaski County, MO. She married JAMES ALPHUS VAUGHN September 07, 1865, son of WILLIAM VAUGHAN and ARABELLA WILLIAMS. I concluded that this was not my ancestor since I had no reason to believe that she had been born in England and, further, I had her date of birth as 1843, not Abt. 1850. I recently learned from a new "net cousin" that this was indeed my ancestor, that the census information about place of birth was simply incorrect and that she had "altered" her date of birth for matrimonial purposes.
