    1. [TURNER-L] Re: Don Turner's Information

    3. Shirley, I, too, was hoping to hear from Don Turner. A few months ago I sent him an email and, though the address seemed okay, I've yet to hear from him. I've repeated the information which came from Don and then added some additional information: ------------------------ "From_: knuteann@Valley-internet.net Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 16:08:31 - 0800 To: ablancett@scescape.net From: Don & Ann Turner <knuteann@Valley-internet.net> Subject: Elusive William Turner Hi Gail, Thank you for the information. Some of the material I was aware of but much of it was new. I think the William that you show in the 1790 Laurens co., 96 District, SC census is our William. I think this because the numbers fit and the limited inf. on ages agree. The only one that we actually have an age on is Nathan who was born in 1780 and died in Roane co. TN in 1840. I have since found three of the other children in 1850 cnesus and they have shown there birthplace as SC. We don't know if the children were born in SC or William. There was one deed that was from William and Sarah Turner in Lauren co. SC in book G, but the book was lost. The Thomas that filed for a pension from Laurens co. S.C. and who had lived in Halifax co. was of particular interest to me. I havae wondered if he was related, particularly since he was from Va. and ended up in Laurens co. SC. Our family has always said that our William was from Va. but I think that this is our William in SC, but could have come from Va and on to Ga and then to Tn. According to our information we think that William would have gone directly to Franklin co from Sc. We have him on deeds in Franklin co. at early part of 1800's. In fact he and Zachariah and Nathan, who we thnik was his sons. They were on in Ga a short time and then went to Roane co. Tn for they are on records there in 1814. We have that William was b.1748 and m.Sarah, possibly Denny. We don't know where he or Sarah were born or died. Family inf. also states that he fought in the Revolutionary war and was under General Morgan in the Battle of Cowpens, also in the Guilford campaign. But he didn't file for a pension, so could have died before they were available. I have started the search through all the William Turners that were in the Virginia militia and Continental army. I am going to send inf. on the "Elusive" William as we have it. Thanks for your help and I hope you can see a connection with something within your research. Don Generation No. 1 1. Cornelius Acard Married by Thomas McMullin, JP." ---------------------- About some of the information Don mentioned in his original note above, I can give you the sources I've found, most from my latest trip to SLC. NATHAN TURNER For Nathan, son of William per Don Turner's information, I found a book that lists the same cemetery Don mentioned, where Nathan is buried: Pickel Cemetery. From the "Watts Bar Reservoir Cemeteries" by James L Douthat (1986), the Pickel Cemetery is "located on the left bank of the Tennessee River in Roane County, TN at mile 559.5 on wooded knoll approximately 500 feet from river....Contains 14 graves, 5 monuments." He says the survey of this cemetery was made February 6, 1941 and the following people are listed: (name) (born) (died) " 1. Henry W. Pickel Nov 30, 1812 Mar 13, 1855 2. Mary A Pickel May 31, 1851 Oct 23, 1852 3.-4. unknown 5. Luther M. Turner Oct 5, ---- Dec 14, 1838 6. Nathan Turner Feb 21, 1780 Mar 1, 1840 7. unknown 8. L. M Turner, Jr. ------- -------- 9.-14. unknown" There were 2 maps in the book, one for this cemetery, showing the location of the graves, using the above (reference) numbers, and one for the general area along the Tennessee River, showing the location of the cemeteries. But Don says he also has pictures of these tombstones. I'd love to have a copy of those, wouldn't you? Then there's an interesting connection between Turners and this cemetery: in another book I found in SLC, "Roane County Marriages, 1801-1838" by Edythe Rucker Whitley (1983). Page 72 has a Henry W. Pickle [yes, "le" instead of "el" at the end] marrying an Elizabeth "Tarner" (this surname is underlined in the book, meaning there was an uncertainty about the actual spelling), and I'm betting that's actually Elizabeth TURNER (both lic issued and marr performed Dec 7, 1837). Could be that Mary A Pickel is their daughter and could be that one of the unknown graves belongs to Elizabeth. So, there appears to be a connection between the Pickels and the Turners, a fairly strong one with Nathan being buried there. Might this Elizabeth Tanner/Turner Pickle be Nathan's daughter? Remember, Nathan's wife's name was Elizabeth (Hicks). Anyone know? Also for Nathan, I was unable to find his marriage in Roane Co TN but it might be in Knox Co TN or SC or NC or even Franklin Co, GA, as a note from Bill Bryant indicated. But I did find a Nathan serving as bondsman for 2 other marriages in Roane Co TN (same book as above): John Moses [not Turner, just last name Moses] to Betsy Price (or Pelfrey), 5 Sept 1820 and (2) Asher Turner to Jane Carmichael, Oct 25, 1821 (lic issued), Nov 12, 1821 (date marr performed). These fit in with the timeframe where Nathan is probably in Roane Co TN after leaving GA. The other information I gathered which includes Nathan are the tax lists for Roane Co TN (fn b). It's quite interesting to go thru these year by year. I'll be sending another email listing all the people I picked up. But from those, it appears that Nathan had a son Nathaniel (#1), who turned 16 in 1835/36 (b abt 1820) (fn a). Nathan's last appearance in the tax lists is 1840, which is the year shown on the tombstone in the Pickel Cemetery (see above) and is the same as information from Don Turner. In 1841, there's an Elizabeth, in the same district; this appears to be Nathan's wife Elizabeth (Hicks) Turner (fn c). Elizabeth (Hicks) Turner's last appearance in the tax lists is 1849, so she either died 1848/49 or she sold/gave away all her land. Perhaps there are 2 Elizabeths in the Pickel Cemetery: Nathan's wife and Nathan's daughter. So maybe this helps with the information about Nathan at least. SARAH TURNER I also found a record of her marriage in the marriage book mentioned above, confirming what Don Turner had. The information in the book, however, had no indication of Cornelius Acard as surety nor the JP who performed this marriage. Just different information in different books? DEEDS IN GA I have found confirmation for most of the land transactions mentioned in another email (that one from Gail Blanett, I think, but may have originated from Don Turner). It listed certain land transactions. Is this information you want more about the sources of the information? For the other pieces of information in Don Turner's email, I'd also like to find some additional substantiation, which I'm still trying to do. I'm particularly interested in his statement that Anna and Daniel ended up in Missouri (see Don's Endnotes above). From the tax lists, Daniel Turner did sell his land in 1824. I need a bit more information on John Casey (who married Anna Turner) - how long he shows up in the tax lists. I've been looking at John Casey in GA also. You were sounding a bit desperate for source information - is there something else you're really after? I've got some more information on Elisha, which I'll be sending out in a bit. Hope some of this helps, and though it's not really about our Zachariah, it is probably about HIS family. The unfortunate thing about Zachariah and his being in Bedford county, TN is that county's courthouse burned either before 1840 or 1860 (can't find my note on it right now, to provide the right year). But almost all records were lost. Trying to think of a new tactic for this. All for now. Jo Ann Footnotes (fn): (a) The Roane Co TN tax lists report all white (and black) males age 16 or older. Nathaniel (#1) first appears in 1836 in the same district as Nathan. Nathaniel (#1) must be age 16 in 1836, and would have been born about 1820. There's also a John (#2) Turner who makes his first appearance in the same tax district as Nathan in 1826, 10 years before Nathaniel (#1) appears in the tax lists. Bill Bryant has some family information that Nathan had a son named John, and that this John (son of Nathan) was born 1804 in GA. But in 1820, the year Nathaniel #1 was born, John #2 would be only 16. It seems unlikely that this John (#2) would be the father of Nathaniel (#1). Bill Bryant also has a Nathaniel (#2) Benton Turner born 1833 as John #2's son; this Nathaniel (#2) would only be 3 years old in 1836. Thus the first Nathaniel (#1) is most probably Nathan's son. Also Nathaniel (#1) all of a sudden has land in 1841, just a year after Nathan (his father) died, perhaps purchased with an inheritance? One other note, however: there is a record of Nathaniel Turner m Susannah McPherson 12 Sept 1837 in Roane Co TN (same book on marriages mentioned above). If this is Nathaniel #1 and if Nathaniel #1 were just 16 in 1836, he'd only be 17 or 18 in 1837, the date of this marriage. Nathaniel #1 marrying at only age 17 or 18 is possible, but then it's also possible (tho' a bit less likely, I think) that Nathaniel #1 could be John's son. (b) Roane County TN Tax Lists, 1828-1851, in several different volumes, by Robert L Bailey (1994) (c) Amount of land Nathan had in 1840 is same amount of land Elizabeth claims in 1841 (487 1/2 acres). ____ jo ann rowley-minhoto, hrgg41a@prodigy.com
