[The following is a copy of the first four pages of a book entitled "JAMES TURNER (1758-1826) and his many Descendants through 1978." by Pauline Turner Fake, 4911 Cambray, San Antonio, TX 78229.] WILLIAM TURNER, a Minister of the Kirk of Scotland, was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1645. He married Mary McLemore who was born in the same shire in 1650, they married in 1670. On account of the persecution of the convenanters, William fled with his young bride and settled in the North of Ireland. Persecution followed him and his co-believers there and with quite a colony, he came to Maryland in 1680 and settled in Worcester county. (Note) a descendant of Zadock Turner, his great grandson, stated in writing that he (William) came to Accomack County, Virginia, and from there the family moved to Maryland, Worcester county but Worcester county was not formed until 1742 -- he settled not far from Snow Hill, the present County Seat.) Lilburn William's Co., of the 2nd Maryland Reg't. of foot commanded by Col. Thomas Price.* ( * This Company was designated at various times as Capt. John Stewart's, Capt. Lilburn William's and 2nd Company). Have Rev. Papers from National Archives, Washington, D.C. (PTF) He served in 1778-1780 for duration. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Trenton, and Valley Forge with his brother Zadock Turner. He came to Georgia with his family in 1793 and settled in Hancock County, Ga. William Turner signed the Oath of Fidelity and support of the State of Maryland Feb. 23, 1778 in Prince George Co., Md., sworn before Mason Beall. William Turner received a land grant of 300 acres in Hancock County, Ga., 1798 (Grant Book AAAAA,p.661). William Turner purchased 200 acres of land from Abraham Reddick and wife Hannah, in Greene Co., Ga, on the 12 Mile Beaverdam of Shoulder- bone Creek, 8-23-1789 (Hancock Co. Deed Book D,p.169) William Turner of Hancock, County, Ga. drew land in 1806 Land Lottery Lot # 79, in 4th District of Baldwin Co., (This land later fell into Putnam Co. Ga.) William Turner in Tax Digest of Baldwin Co. Ga. 1808, 1809, and 1810, by his guardian Joshua Turner. William Turner also listed as a defaulter in 1810. In 1809, William Turner sold 1/2 of Lot # 79 to his son Zadoc Turner (Putnam Co. Deed Book A, pg. 271) Joshua Turner and John Matthews were appointed guardians of William Turner, non compos Mentis 9-4-1809. Baldwin Co., Ga. (The Estate Index shows they were guardians of William Turner, minor but the records show this is a mistake- should be Wm.Senr. (PTF) Joshua Turner and John Matthews guardian of William Turner 1809 paid : 18 mo. board for William Turner $275.00 3 months board for Margaret Turner in her last sickness and burial expenses $30.00. Baldwin Co.DSales Bk.D,p.54. Annual return for William Turner by John Matthews for period from 1810 to 1813 shows that he paid Joshua Turner, Thomas B. Turner and others. He received cash from Philip Turner 87, 56 1/4, Thomas B. Turner's note 30.00, Batson Bullock's note 31.00, James Knowles' note 12.00, Nathan Culver's note 389.00, William Turner's note 116.00, Carter's note 43.00 and Col.J. Davis's note of $3105.00. Total:$3813, 56 1/4 (Baldwin Co. Ann. Ret.Bk.A,p.3) (Col. J. Davis's note of $3105.00 was for William Turner's land in Hancock Co. Ga.). Annual return for William Turner, deceased, by John Matthews 7-7-1817: 4-24-1813 paid B. Bullock T.Fitch, atty (?)Bird Joshua Turner for board 1 yr., 5 mo. (Baldwin Co. Annual Returns Book A. p.118) John Matthews and Joshua Turner guardians of William Turner ask leave to sell 200 acres on Shoulderbone Creek in Hancock Co., for benefit of heirs of said William Turner, 11-5-1810. (Baldwin Co. Ordinary Minutes 1807-1811,p.36,54.). John Matthews and Joshua Turner, guardian of William Turner sold to Jonathan Davis for $3105.00, agreeable to order of Inferior Court of Baldwin County, land in Hancock County, on the 12 mile Beaverdam containing 300 acres more or less, bounded by James Waller, Joseph Turner, Samuel Hawkins and Lewis Tyus's land, 1-1-1811. (Hancock Co. Ga., Deed Book 1,p.332). John Matthews and Joshua Turner were appointed administrators of the Estate of William Turner, deceased 10-8-1811. (Baldwin Co. Ordinary Court minutes 1807-1811,p.71.) Baldwin County Ordinary Minutes 1812-1819, p.34. Betsy Turner chooses Batson Bulloch as guardian 9-6-1813. Final Returns of William Turner's estate- Write Clerk of Inferior Court for final returns. Letter written and the reply was that Baldwin County, Ga. had suffered a great loss of records due to a fire and these returns were evidently burned. Therefore we have no proof other than the deeds of the counties to prove that James Turner is the son of William Turner b. 1733 near Snow Hill, Maryland. PTF. [I have copied these pages as is.
