Hi, Steve: Many thanks for your Turner abstracts. A Jim Tanner in Peoria, IL gave me info a year ago on two of my ancestors; I'd like to share the info here. JAMES TURNER, Senator, b. 20 Dec 1766, Southampton Co., VA, d. Bloomsbury, Warren Co., NC 15 Jan 1824. He early removed with his parents to Bute (now warren) Co., NC, and there received such education as the common schools of that district afforded. During the Revolutionary War, he served with Nathaniel Bacon in a company of NC volunteers commanded by Col. John Macon. His public career began by his election to the legislature in 1798, with re-election in 1799 and 1800, and was continued by his service in the upper house in 1801-02. He was then chosen governor of NC, which place he held until 1805. Gov. Turner was then elected as a Democrat to the US senate, and served from 4 March 1805, until 1816, when he retired on account of failing health. (See Turner, Daniel, his son) TURNER, DANIEL, soldier, b. Warren Co., NC 21 Sept 1796, d. Mare Island, Solano Co., CA 21 July 1860. Daniel married Anna Key, daughter of Francis Scott Key, author of the National Anthem. He was graduated at the US military accademy in 1814, (West Point?) and entered the army as 2nd Lt. in the corps of artillery. He served during the second war with England as acting assistant engineer in erecting temporary defences for NY City, after which he was ordered to Platsburg. On the reduction of the army, he resigned on 17 May 1815, and then spent two years at William and Mary College. He was elected to the lower branch of the NC legislature, serving from 1819 until 1823. Mr. Turner was elected to Congress, and served from 3 Dec 1827 until 3 Mar 1829, after which, in 1847-54, he was principal of the Warrenton, NC female seminary. His last office was that of superintending engineer of the construction of the public works at Mare Island navy yard, San Francisco harbor, which he held from the establishment of the navy yard in 1854 until the time of his death. Note: Daniel and Anna had 11 children. Both Daniel and Anna, and several of their children, and other family members are buried on Mare Island which was the largest US Naval Shipyard on the West Coast until a few years ago when it was dismantled/decommissioned. Daniel was a Civil Engineer who came west with Admiral Farragut to establish Mare Island. I was told James Turner was the brother of my 3rd great g'father, Henry H. Turner, making Daniel his nephew. I'm still trying to put this together! I am also very family with Mare Island. Dorothy Turner Gray
