A few other research tips are: Use Ancestry to look up the person you are researching. Without a membership it will not let you see the actual source but it will say at least WHERE the source was found like "1870 State, County, etc". You can take that information and at least know the area to search on HQ. Saves a lot of time. Ancestry is expensive but oh so worth it to me. Another option, even though it is not always listed on the Ancestry site you CAN get a 3 month membership. Save up all your research questions and use it for 3 months, then do more research NOT on Ancestry until you come up with enough dead ends to justify using it for another three months. Also, when you get the information from Ancestry try the rootsweb listings and genweb for those areas to see maybe if there are transcriptions available for what you need. Use Worldcat (Worldwide Catalog of libraries all over the world) to check to see the holdings other libraries have for your research area. You can get them (if they are loanable) through interlibrary loan. If they are NOT on the library's list of circulation allowed books ask the library for copies of the index pages. Can't hurt anyway. :) Last but CERTAINLY not least is to do the old GOGGLE seach on your ancestor's name. Putting quotation marks around the words will make sure the words are found together and not just one of each on the site,. ie "Thomas Cain Turner" instead of Thomas Cain Turner. Use spelling variations as MANY times the spelling of the name was a matter of hearing and "that's what it sounded like they said" *grin* Just some ideas. With my Turner info is scarce as it is I have had to become very resourceful. Not that it is helping on that line at this point. LOL Good luck
Don't forget, however that Ancestry has every name indexing for the census and 1850 which HQ does not have plus many more resources other than census. I have and use both Ancestry and HQ in my online searches. They both are useful. The NEHGS site for members of the society is another good online subscription for those with New England roots. A NEHGS membership is $75 per year. They will be losing their access to HQ I believe along with other genealogical societies mentioned earlier in this thread. But they have other unique resources and the quarterly journal subscription mailed to ones home. I just checked with our local library in Hillsborough County Florida. They have no information about stopping this service. We are a pretty large county and they really keep on top of things here. It is up to individual libraries. Just FYI, you can get an out of area library card to our library for $30.00 which will give you access to HQ from home among a ton of other things like Conumer guides, Newspapers and magazine from around the country...etc. _http://www.hcplc.org/hcplc/ig/_ (http://www.hcplc.org/hcplc/ig/)
I am not sure. I live in a rural area and the public library here does not have Heritage Quest - I did check that out. I thought it was the remote access that was being stopped regardless of which organization offered it. But, again, I am not sure. Carolyn DeWolfe P.O. It was my understanding that it was only genealogical societies that could not allow HQ remote access, but that it was allowed through public libraries. Have you heard anything different? We have just been notified by another genealogical association that Heritage Quest will no longer allow access except in a library. I have used Heritage Quest for years from home, so I sent an email to Heritage Quest to express disappointment in their new policy. They do indeed plan to stop remote access effective the end of October, and will allow access only in libraries that have their service. Pat, I found the following household in 1910 (not Turners but will address this next): 1910 Census, Dunklin Co., MO, Cotton Hill Twp ED 63, Sheet 4 (Ancestry.com image 7/51) Shores, Jim----Head----38 M once---11 years-----MO MS MO Shores, Gertrude--Wife---30 M once---11 years----7 Children born/4 living ---GA GA TN (consistent with 1900) Shores, Blanche---dau-----7 Shores, Velma-----dau-----5 Shores, James-----son-----2 Shores, Stella-----dau-----8/12 Wilburn, Evert-----laborer----18----MO TN MO So, hoping to find Turners in same area, I did a search of Cotton Hill Twp for 1910. There were a couple of Turners but none of them had birth places that would make sense to be related to Gertrude. I will try adjoining townships but nothing is turning up on Ancestry.com's indexing (using all the wild cards I could think of up to now) that look like they are Gertrude's family. Frankly, I couldn't do genealogy research without Ancestry.com's census images. The indexing is sometimes crazy but if you learn to use all the wild cards and some imagination, you often can eventually find folks. Everyone should check with a local library to see if they offer Heritage Quest. I can use my library card with a pin number from them to log on from home. They also have a book selection. That is tiresome to search page by page but sometimes they have informative stuff. And the Rev War files are usefull. I found my great great great grandfather and 16 pages of his file. It saved sending to NARA. And the pages were much more readable than the photocopies I got from NARA on some other file.

Finally! One I think I can help with. Belmont Co, OH, either 1820 or 1830 census there is a Samuel Turner on it. This county's census is BROKEN up into neighborhoods and not all censuses are listed every time when you think you have found them all. Say, for example, you might see 2 or 3 for that county and think that is all there are but trust me, there are several. What were they doing there? There was a government-funded project to take one of the major roads and build it through OH (and westward) and also they were working on a canal, The Erie Canal perhaps? Can't remember, thinking it was the Erie Canal. Anyway, it was a huge government project that produced many jobs and that is why so many people went to Belmont Co, OH and other areas nearby in the early 1800's. Hope this helps some, at least you know why they went there. Lisa Chatelain "Gail R. Blancett" <ablancett@atlantic.net> wrote: A new line has been added to the Turner DNA Project. Kit #68652.
