    1. [TURNER] Newest Turner DNA results
    2. Gail R. Blancett
    3. I'll be sending some new results to my webmaster tomorrow. Because there is usually a bit of a delay for him to get them uploaded to our Turner DNA Project website, I wanted to let those who monitor these two lists what the new lines and findings will be. We now have 220 members. We have three 3 new kits to be added. Two represent additional lines tested from the same oldest known ancestor which confirm that we have a good DNA signature. One is an entirely new line and one I think is very exciting. I'm hoping it will open up some doors for kits that turn out to match on 12 markers IF the remaining markers (13-37) continue to match them closely. Kit # 72756 is from John Turner b c 1805 in TN died 1870 in Cocke Co., TN married to Mary (maiden name unknown). The Haplogroup is the less common E3b and the only two we have in the Turner project at this point of this haplogroup. John Turner b c 1805 TN d 1870 Cocke Co. TN m Mary James Howell/Howard Turner b c 1828 TN d 1865 Cocke Co. TN m (1) Sarah "Saida" Fox Absolam Fox Turner b 1852 Cocke Co. TN d 1915 Culleoka, Maury Co. TN m Amanda Buckner James Anderson Turner b 1877 Cocke Co. TN d 1944 Maury Co. TN m (2) Anna Maggie Austin This particular testee is through their son James H. Turner born about 1828 in TN who died in 1865 in Cocke Co., TN; our first testee was through John and Mary's son John E. Turner 1838-1864. We know that John and Mary Turner were in Cocke Co. TN from 1839 and were first on the 1840 Census there. We do not know where he was located before this date but all children are listed as born in TN. Interestingly, there was a Nathan Turner on the 1830 Census one house away from Absolam Fox (1810 NC) that we believe is the Fox family with which at least two of John and Mary's children intermarried. Cocke Co. TN records were destroyed in the 1876 Court house fire making it difficult to research this family. James Howell/Howard Turner was married first to Sarah "Saida" Fox within the 1850 Census year. In 1850, he and Sarah are enumerated directly next door to Abolam Fox b. 1810 NC and wife Elizabeth. A court case involving descendants of John and Mary Turner which went to the TN Supreme Court for final resolution documents that James Howell or Howard Turner was married to "Saida" Fox and that they had 3 children--Absolam, Elizabeth and John--before Saida Fox Turner died about 1856, James Howell/Howard Turner married second to Martha Reed and he had 3 children by this second wife--Charles, James and Mary. The court case documents that James Howell/Howard Turner died in 1865 before his father died in 1870. This DNA test result is a good example of the power of DNA testing to resolve questions. James Howell/Howard Turner's son Absolam Fox Turner had first been listed on the 1860 Census as Absolam "Fox" (age 9) living in the household of John (1805) and Mary (1799) Turner. By 1870 and thereafter, he was always listed as Absolam Turner. In the court case, he specifically stated that he was living with his grandparents, John and Mary Turner. However, some people researching the family of Absolam Fox (almost certainly the father of Sarah "Saida" Fox) saw that him mislisted in the 1860 Census as "Fox" and made the assumption that this child must be a child of Absolam Fox (1810-1860). However, when combined with the extensive court case (over 250 pages) plus all later census records and now the DNA test result for a male Turner directly descended from Absolam Fox Turner (1852-1915) which is a perfect 12/12 match to the descendant of another son of John and Mary Turner, it is 100% clear that he was the son of James Howard/Howell Turner and grandson of John and Mary Turner. He was not a child of Absolam Fox (1810-1860). Kit #71182 is from Fielding Turner b 1706 Northumberland Co. VA d 1793 Loudoun Co. VA. He is thought to have had 2 or 3 wives--the last being Winifred Hawley (lineage of Kit 11893). Lineage from the newest testee is from Fielding's first wife, believed to be Ann: Fielding Turner b 1706 Northumberland Co. VA d 1793 Loudoun Co. VA William Turner b 1733 d c 1823 probably Wood Co. VA/WV m Sarah Ellzey Thomasin Ellzey Turner b 1773 Fairfax Co. VA d 1850 Fabius Twp. Marion Co. MO m Mary Ann Robert E. Turner b 1801 VA d 1886 Harrisonville, Meigs Co. OH m Elizabeth Bradfield William Presley Turner b 1838 Harrisonville, Meigs Co. OH d 1923 Harrisonville, Meigs Co. OH m (1) Henrietta Gorslin Delbert Mansfield Turner b 1872 Harrisonville, Meigs Co. OH d 1956 Meigs Co. OH m Cora E. Hull Henry Clinton Turner b 1904 Harrisonville, Meigs Co. OH d 1990 Middleport, Meigs Co. OH This test kit was a welcome addition to the project as we needed very much to have a descendant from one of the older children of Fielding Turner which could be well documented to confirm that we had a reliable DNA signature to represent Fielding Turner. As I have mentioned to various people, I was a little bit uncomfortable that the DNA signature we had for our first testee from this line. He descended from Fielding's child born after Fielding's death and might have a possible problem with the paternity. I hope that does not upset anyone by my suggesting this but with Fielding would have been in his late 80s when he fathered James Hawley Turner, I felt that I would like to have at least one other confirming test result. We now have what appear to be three men tested from the line of Fielding Turner and I think that there can be little question that we have a reliable DNA signature for him. Kit #N17529 apparently is the one with one mutation in the first panel of markers. One reason this has been so important to confirm is because Fielding (1706) appears to be the man who was made guardian of the children of Edward Turner who left a will in 1738 in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland Co. VA. There was also a John Turner who left a will in 1742 in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland Co. VA and it had usually been speculated that those two men were likely brothers. We have a line tested that is from George Turner b 1731 in Northumberland Co. VA who is thought to be the son named in the will of John (will of 1742 Northumberland Co. VA). The assumption has always been that Fielding Turner was related to Edward (1738 will). Thus, if Edward (will of 1738) and John (will of 1742) were related, the DNA of all descendants of these three men should match. The line from George Turner (1731) does not match the line of Fielding Turner (1706). Thus, either these older ones--Edward, John, and Fielding--are not related or else George Turner (1731) may not be the correct George named in the will of John in 1742. However, extensive research on George and all the others named in the will of John Turner (will 1742) would appear that he is the correct George Turner and these families then moved up into the Fairfax and Loudoun Co. VA area along with collateral families. If there is anyone else who is researching the descendants of John Turner (will 1742) who has a male line directly descended from one of the other sons of John, I would encourage you to please help find a living male descendant who could test to see if we can gain any further understanding of this family and how he might have been related to Edward Turner (will 1738). Likewise, we could use someone who descends from one of the children of Edward (will 1738). Kit #69911. This is a new line to be added to the project and I'm very excited about this one. This is the lineage for this line: Thomas Turner b est 1720-1730s in N. Ireland d 1789 Harford Co. MD m Martha Col. Andrew Turner b 1751 N. Ireland or PA d 1840 Blackhorse, Harford Co. MD m (1) Ann McDonald Eli Turner b 1788 Harford Co. MD d 1863 Madonna, Harford Co. MD m Eleanor Beatty Andrew Turner b 1822 Harford Co. MD d 1866 Madonna, Harford Co. MD m Julia Ann Whiteford James Leslie Whiteford Turner b 1863 Blackhorse, Harford Co. MD d 1950 Blackhorse, Harford Co. MD Robert Roy Turner b 1896 Madonna, Harford Co. MD d 1979 Madonna, Harford Co. MD The history of this family states that Thomas Turner was born in N. Ireland and immigrated first to Chester Co. PA and then, as a result of the border disputes before the PA/MD line was settled, he moved over into MD and settled in the area of Madonna, Harford Co. MD. Col. Andrew Turner was either born in N. Ireland and immigrated with his parents or else he was about 9 years old (thus about 1760) when the family came to the colonies. The preliminary 12 marker results on the DNA for this kit (37 will be coming) is that at the present time, he is a 12/12 marker match to a group of Turners we already have in the project. This is our Group 18 (Bright Green group) on our Turner DNA results chart. At least one of these in this group knows they descend from an ancestor born in Co. Tyrone, Ireland, in 1803 and immigrated in 1836. Several of the others are located in PA at an early date. If this match continues to hold with more markers, this could help all of them begin to identify the region in N. Ireland to do more fruitful research. Additionally, the reason this person was sought out to test is because a group of Turners that settled in York Co., SC had been said, by an earlier now deceased researcher, to be descended from Thomas Turner (d. 1789 Harford Co. MD). We sought this man to test to confirm that connection. They DO NOT match so it is clear that the York Co. Turners do not descend from this Thomas Turner d 1789 Harford Co. MD. Again, I can not emphasize enough that this is another powerful example of how DNA testing when combined with other research can help prove or disprove relationships. I would like to find descendants of Thomas (d. 1789) who are said to have gone to Clark Co. OH to test in the project. One of Thomas's sons, Samuel, is said to have moved to Clark Co. OH. We also are looking for someone descended from Samuel Turner born 1762 in MD who settled in York Co. SC prior to 1790 and died in 1857 in York Co. SC to test. He had a son named Andrew Turner (spouse named Jane) who moved to Yell Co. AR. I believe some descendants of this Andrew Turner still live in Yell Co. AR. Additional markers (26-37) were received for Kit #70661. These did not affect the status of this kit with no matches. We have at least four new kits in the lab at present. As always, I encourage you to check the Turner DNA Project's website and find a male Turner of your line of Turners to join in the project. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~turner Click on the word "Results" on the left. 3. Hello Turners - Male & Female!! Talk about Frustration I am a male Turner thats been on the DNA circuit since day one with very little results so far but have not given up yet. I have traced my ancestors from present time Florida on paper trail up threw Georgia to a earliest 1810 Tax Record of Tattnall County Georgia on a James TURNER abt 1775. So if I can help anyone else on Georgia records tracing there Turners write-->> George Robert TURNER Born Fl, Ga Parents..

    3. I helped contribute some of the information on that site to Joan Hackett. I think she is one of the best researchers around. Even she can't find anything on my Turner. Are you connected to Sealocks. I do know one thing if you are a Sealock then you have to be descended to Thomas Sealock born about 1737 whose first record in America was 1763 Chester Pennsylvania...there is no Sealock anywhere in the "old" world. He was an orphan and took the name Sealock. Not knowing his own. Now isn't that a brickwall. Our only hope there is one day to make a DNA match.

    2. In understand your frustration. I have the same problem with my Thomas Cain Turner from macon/Spalding Georgia b 1860. What are the birthdates for the daughters? Do you know anything besides where they lived? Even found them in the census? If so, where? Do you have family members names of Eugene and Agnes? Maybe some of the family members took them? 2. The name Sealock ran a bell for me. Try going to Rootsweb.com. At the top, click on Family Trees. When u get there go down to the blank box for "Surname" and type in Sealock. This will take you to the Sealock family tree. I don't know if you will find what u are looking for or not but its worth a try. Good luck.

    3. I guess I thought the British soldier would be enough to identify it as the Revolutionary War, but we also fought the British in the war of 1812, didn't we? Got any suggestions as to how to find a possible British deserter of that war? Thanks! 3. I have posted this before but I never get an answer. Maybe some day someone will know... I have a Turner relative. She was born in Maryland about 1780. She moved to Virginia and shows up in the 1850 census with a family. There is no husband. Now I don't know if Turner was her maiden name and the two children were out of wedlock.. Her name is Sophia A. Turner. One daughter was Virginia Turner about 1828 who married Owen Thomas Sealock born 1818. They lived in Waren County. Sophia also had a female living there named Eliza Turner no husband. Eliza had several children one was Mildred Turner 1835 who married Thomas Fox 1835 they moved to Frederick County Maryland. On her marriage certificate Mildred Turner is said to have listed her father as John Turner and her mother Eliza Howard Turner. No record of a John Turner has been found and no marriage license found. Can anybody shed any light on this family.

    1. [TURNER] New Lines in the DNA Project
    2. Gail R. Blancett
    3. A couple of new results have come back on the Turner DNA Project and have been posted. Please refer to the results chart on the Turner DNA Project website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~turnerdna/ Kit #70317 has been added to our Group 8 (one of the Green groups) on our results chart. The lineage for this line is: William Turner b ? d ? m 1781 in Orange Co. NC to Ruth Standiford (d/o Israel Standiford whose family came from Baltimore Co. MD) Andrew Turner b 1/1/1783 Orange Co., NC d Ashe Co. NC Hugh C. Turner b c1832 Ashe Co. NC d c1877 Ashe Co. NC m (2) Mary Ann Burkett William Walter Turner b 4/25/1873 Ashe Co. NC d 11/28/1946 Galax, VA m Rosa Alice Welch Hugh Andrew Turner b 1905 Ashe Co. NC d 1999 Galax, VA This is a very interesting result in that he matches a group of Turners that were located in York Co., SC from about 1768 forward in time. One of the matches is to a James Turner born in 1738 who came into Charleston, SC in Feb 1768 from N. Ireland. Another match is to the line of Robert Turner born about 1739 who settled in the same area of SC and is thought to have also possibly been an immigrant. Old research on the line of Robert Turner (researcher no longer living) said he was a son of Thomas Turner who died in 1789 in Harford Co. MD. However, this link is now being questioned as research on the line in Maryland that Robert is said to be from does not seem to support that he was the son of Thomas Turner who died in 1789 in Harford Co. MD. What is interesting is that this same area of Harford Co. MD is a part that was cut off of Baltimore Co. MD where the Standiford family came from. It is conceivable that the family of William Turner (spouse Ruth Standiford) could have come from that same area of MD and these Turners then could have earlier common ancestors. We currently have a test in the lab for a direct documented male Turner descended from Thomas Turner who died in 1789 in Harford Co. MD. As soon as this result is back, we hope to know more. The person testing is a descendant of Thomas Turner's son Andrew Turner born 1751 in N. Ireland who served during the Revolution in MD. Kit #69607 has been added to Group 10 (the Light Blue group) on our results chart. The lineage for this line is: Prof. Taleaferro (spellings vary) Turner b ? d bef 9/1/1845 in AL married to Bethany Kelly (born 1816) whose family was in Jasper Co., GA Toliver/Taliaferro Allen Burton Turner b 5/28/1844 AL d 9/4/1912 Jasper Co. GA m Mary Alice Wilson Garland Brooks Turner Sr. b 4/18/1884 Jasper Co. GA d 1/8/1974 DeKalb Co. GA (resided Jasper Co. GA) m Bessie Mae White Family lore is that Prof. Taleaferro Turner was from the Auburn, AL area and came to Jasper Co. GA to teach. He met and married Bethany Kelly, daughter of Allen Kelly and Polly Riggins and returned to AL where he and Bethany Kelly both died. Her parents sent a wagon to AL to get the children and her father and Jarrot/Jarret Kelly and John Kelly were made guardians of the children. To make this even more interesting: Jarret Kelly was married to a daughter of Eaton Banks and Roberson Hill Turner was married to another daughter of Eaton Banks. The 1830 Census of Jasper Co. GA shows a Richard Turner age 50-60 living there near Eaton Banks. Also there are Shadrick Turner (20-30). I know that some of the family trees on Rootsweb lists the parents of Roberson Hill Turner as Richard Turner b 1779 and Mary Henderson. However, there seems to be conflicting information on where this Richard Turner died. Some list his death in VA and others in GA. Are two Richard Turner's being mixed up here? I simply raise the question because it seems a bit unusual that this Richard Turner would be there in GA in the 1830 and 1840 time frame and then go back to VA to die in 1852 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Also, another question on Richard Turner born about 1779. A deed in Jasper Co. GA records dated Apr 13, 1816 is indexed as Richard Turner Jr. although the actual deed has been transcribed as saying only Richard Turner of Jasper Co. GA selling land to C. T. Traylor. The deed is witnessed by Eaton Banks. In any event, the DNA for the descendant of Prof. Taleaferro Turner matches the line of Meshack and Shadrack and the big group which appreas to descend from Richard Turner who died in Caroline Co. VA in the 1740s. With the records in Jasper Co. GA seemingly connecting the family of Richard Turner and Roberson Hill Turner to the Kelly and Banks families there in Jasper Co., GA, this seems like the most likely family group to which this line belongs. Kit #70661 has been placed in the No Group (white background) Turners with no matches to Turners. We may have an adopted child in this line and we very much need to find a descendant of the oldest two generations to test for comparison. The paper trail line as it was given to me is: James Warren Turner b c1820 Lebanon, Marion Co. KY (actually Lebanon Co. was not formed at this time) m Elizabeth S. Smith John Warner Turner b 10/1850 Louisville, Jefferson Co. KY d 1/22/1934 Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co. TX m Elmira Bogard (or Beauregard) in 1872 in Neosho Co. KS *James William Turner b 1874 Caldwell Co. TX (have two possible birth dates on him) d 9/7/1938 Denison, Grayson Co. TX m Ethel Pansey Garrett James Edward Turner b 12/20/1908 Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co. TX d 2/13/1988 Durant, Bryan Co. OK *James William Turner in the household of John W. Turner and wife A. M. (thought to be Almira Mercy Bogard) in 1880 census was listed as an adopted son. Thus, the DNA we have for this line may not be documenting the line of James Warren Turner at all. We very much need to have someone test from another son of John Warner Turner to see if it matches and also to know if it will match any other Turners already in the project. We now have 220 members of our Turner DNA Project and some interesting lines coming into the project. I continue to urge you to find a male Turner of your line who will document your Turners in the project. I especially want to encourage you to join us if you have a line well documented back to the early colonial period. We have a lot of folks with no matches and your results could well be a huge help to them and to our understanding of how the Turners in this country connect. Gail R.
