    3. Mildred, After I posted the message, I did go back through information I had on the family of Henry Turner who died in 1809 in Caswell Co., NC and some of the notes that we have exchanged over the years and did find where you had Edmund (m. Mary Slade) and James C. as children of Thomas. What I would like to confirm is whether there are estate recordsor perhaps deeds of heirs of Thomas Turner that give the names of his children in it. Then do we know for sure that this Thomas Turner is the son of Henry. We do know that he had a son named Thomas. But, I'm trying to remember (have to relook at my census data for Caswell) whether there were more than one Thomas Turner there at the same time. The story (I think we have shared this in our writings) is that Henry Turner who died in 1809 had several brothers. I've also seen some "recollections" that listed some children of Henry that we know the estate papers for him do not support. It is so easy, and has been a common error made by so many researchers, to assume that everyone of the same surname who appear in a county early on were related. But, if by chance Henry did have a brother who happened to settle in Caswell Co. then he too could have had a son named Thomas and or James. You and I also know how many people have tried to make your James Turner (1756-1835) the one who married Lucy Pleasants when you know your James was having children by his first wife Sarah during the years the OTHER James Turner was married to Lucy Pleasants. If you still have the books, is there anything in them that actually proves or lists the children of Thomas Turner. I suspect the books you have stop before the time that Lucy Turner died and left a will in Caswell Co. Thanks for responding. 3. Gail, I researched Mrs. Katherine Kerr Kendall's various books on Abstracts of Caswell County, N.C. trying to get the descendants of Henry Turner (1721-1809). I thought I sent you a listing of what I have done on Henry,Sr. Children of Henry Turner,Sr. and Graves are: James 1756 - 1835 John died 1830 (killed by slave) Williamson Co TN Henry Jr died before his estate was settled William THOMAS TURNER Elizabeth Franky Mildred Nancy Sarah Susannah Mary The above Thomas had the following children: Nathan EDMUND md Mary Ann Slade Mary JAMES C. md. Mary Bigelow Nancy T. Elizabeth Thomas Turner Does this sound familiar and is this the family you mentioned in above in the subject? I will be glad to send you what I have on this family. It is by no means complete but I have not had the time to work on it lately due to health problems but will get back to it after the holidays. I can send you the notes on all substancuating my research. I am trying to get my program in order so my daughter can take over when she gets time. She is working now but one day will have more time as the children get older. We lost our oldest daughter in June with a heart attack. The ages of the children and places of birth in the 1850 Census suggests the family moved from NC to MO between 1832 and 1837. It is possible that the James C. Turner in 1840 Gasconade Co. MO is the correct James C. Turner but I have not proven that yet. The household is a reasonable fit to the children we know that were with Mary in 1850 plus the daughter Lucretia (born c 1825 per 1870 Census) who married in 1845. 1840 Census, Gasconade Co. They were enumerated near several Pleasants families. I am speculating at this point (and this would need to be proven) that this was Lucy Pleasants who married James Turner on 5 Aug 1793. I believe he is likely the James Turner usually referred to as "of Hico" on tax rolls and records. He is not James Turner, son of Henry Turner who died 1809 in Caswell Co. NC. Mary Bigelow Turner Carthell was still living in 1880 with her son Thad. S. Turner in Franklin Co. TX. She listed her age as 74 born in NC with her father appearing to be born in Connecticut (assuming the census taker used "Con" as the abbreviation) and mother born in NC. A person who submitted the transcription on the Will of Thomas Bigelow "alias Pattillo" written in 1873 in Caswell Co., NC stated that Thomas, Mary and Elizabeth were children of a Mr. Pattillo and Elizabeth ?. After the death of Mr. Pattillo, his widow, Elizabeth married second Roderick Bigelow. The three Pattillo children--Thomas, Mary and Elizabeth--took the step-father's name Bigelow. This seems to be born out by the fact that Mary's marriage bond listed her as Mary Bigelow rather than Pattillo. All I meant by asking for sources was if you have seen any documents about the families of Sampson, Daniel or Wilson Turner, I would appreciate knowing about it. 3. Thanks so much to all who contributed. Now I can stop trying to figure out if this family is connected to my Samuel Turner, born 1812 SC in the Salmon group! Didn't this Moses marry in Warren Co, TN? There was a Madison Turner on 1850 Jasper Co, TX census, born in Warren Co, TN and that is what got me to searching on Moses Turner/Eliza Bates. I wonder if Madison is connected to our Samuel or your Moses? We need a participate in the Madison Turner group to solve this mystery. Now you've all really got me wondering! "Gail R. Edmund Turner here is almost certainly the Edmund Turner who married Mary Slade in Caswell Co., NC. In the "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas (Chicago: GoodSpeed Publishers, 1890), there is a profile of two sons of Edmund Turner and Mary Slade--Capt. B. (Bartlett) Y. Turner and Nathan S. Turner-- that state that their father Edmund Turner and mother Mary Slade were natives of Caswell Co., NC. It chronicles the families migration from NC briefly to TN (where Bartlett Y. Turner was born), then in 1844 to Missouri where he supposedly remained 10 years, subsequently moving to Mississippi (located in Marshall Co. on 1850 Census) before moving to Phillips Co. AR in 1857 where he and his wife were reported to have died in 1858. The write up stated (ambigously however) that the father of Edmund Turner (b. c 1802) was an Edmund Turner Sr. a native of Maryland who was a Rev. War Soldier. Whether this is correct is not known. There does not appear to be an older Edmund Turner in Caswell Co. records. The exact relationship between Edmund Turner and James C. Turner has not been discovered but it is belived that they likely were related. I had been sent a genealogy outline of someone's research which listed Edmund Turner and James C. Turner as children of Thomas Turner who died in 1823 in Caswell Co., NC. Does anyone have the estate papers for Thomas Turner? Seeking proof. There was a Renfro Turner who is a child of Bartlett Y. Turner (and his third wife Ella Renfro) who was born Nov. 12, 1880 and was in Crittenden Co., MO for his registration for WWI. His wife was Elise Ford. He and Elise appear to have had a son named Renfro Turner Jr. born about 1913. Does anyone recognize this name? I can't find Renfro Turner after the 1920 Census where he was enumerated in Crittenden Co., MO. We need this group documented in the Turner DNA Project.

    1. [TURNER] Lucy Turner died Dec 1859 Caswell Co., NC
    2. Gail R. Blancett
    3. Lucy Turner appears on the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Caswell Co., NC as dying in Dec. 1859 at the age of 86 years old. This mortality schedule listed her place of birth as NC but the 1850 Census shows her with place of birth in VA. There is a will recorded in Caswell Co., NC Will Book S, (1858-1863) for a Lucy Turner which was apparently filed in 1860. Does anyone have access to this will or have a good abstract of this Will? I think (looking for proof) she is Lucy Pleasants, widow of James Turner whom she married on 5 Aug 1793 in Caswell Co., NC. I further think that James Turner died before 1830 when Lucy shows up as head of household in 1830 Census of Caswell Co., NC in age bracket 60-70 years old. In 1840 Census she is still listed in the 60-70 age bracket. I believe that Lucy's husband James Turner is often mistakenly confused with another James Turner who was the son of Henry Turner who died 1809 in Caswell Co., NC. Records suggest strongly that he is a different James Turner entirely. James Turner (son of Henry Turner d. 1809) was born in 1756 in Culpeper Co. VA and died in 1835 in Williamson Co., TN. His first wife was Sarah (last name not known) who didn't die until 9 Aug 1809 (Bible Record) and he was having children by Sarah all through the time period 1780- 1807 so he clearly was not married to Lucy Pleasants in 1793. After the death of Sarah in 1809, he married second to Catherine White on 3 Sept 1811 in Williamson Co. TN and had one more child named William born in 1814. James (son of Henry d. 1809) gave a deposition regarding his brother John Turner who was killed in 1830 in Williamson Co. TN by his slave. In this deposition, he talks of the children his brother John Turner had by Sarah Kimbrough which were named in the will of Henry Turner (d. 1809) to receive John's share of the estate at John Turner's request. These girls names were Frances/Fanny, Nancy, and Delilah. John's wife Sarah Kimbrough was deceased before April 1817 as they are also named in the estate papers of Sarah Kimbrough Turner's father John Kimbrough. Thus, it is clear that this John Turner is the one who married this particular Sarah Kimbrough. John Turner later took up with Catherine Cheeks Butler and lived with her for about 7 years before marrying her. He had two daughters by Catherine before he married her: Minerva Turner who married William Hunter and Levitah Turner who married Josiah Wynne. After he married Catherine Cheeks Butler, they had one legitimate child: John Jackson Turner. I am including this information in this posting in an attempt to try to begin to get the Caswell Co. NC Turners sorted out correctly. There are some Family Trees posted on Rootsweb which appear to have combined and terribly mixed up the Caswell Co., NC Turner lines. We very much need to get these families sorted out to determine which of the lines in Caswell Co., NC were related and which were not related. If we can get male Turners directly descended from the Caswell Co., NC Turners in the Turner DNA Project, we will have a good opportunity to be able to begin to sort them out. It will take a combination of the records plus the DNA tests but it will truly be a huge step in the right direction. If you are researching these lines and especially if you descend from the lines and know of male Turners that are from your group, please please help out on this. Gail R. He 'supposedly' married my grandmother Eileen Geddes in late '23 or early '24 - but we can find no record of the marriage in LA or Orange counties. He also reputedly died in a car accident in '24 - but again no death record. Have more background info. if you feel there is any possibility of a connection. Thanks for considering my question. B.-----------18 M------NC Theophilus-----------13 M------MO Thadeus---------------9 M------MO Mary M. Turner had 15 slaves on the 1850 Slave schedule. As has already been shown, Mary M. Turner married in 1854 to J. Cartheral and he apparently died or they separated before 1860. MO James C. Turner 1 M U 5 1 M 5-10 2 M 10-15 1 M 30-40 1 F 15-20 2 F 30-40 (they have several slaves with them) I believe that the following James Turner in the 1830 Census of Caswell Co. NC may be the correct James Turner. 1830 Census, Caswell Co. NC image 37 James Turner 2 M U 5 [probably Thomas and James R.] 1 M 20-30 [probably James C.] 1 F U 5 [probably Lucretia] 1 F 20-30 [probably Mary Bigelow alias Pattillo] This household is enumerated between Brice Collins (listed by some researchers as the father of Leonidas Collins) and the household of what may be "Lucy" (name unclear but begins with an "L" and ends with a "y") Turner. Would love to contact any one researching these Turners!

    3. Hi Linda, Sampson Turner's father was Daniel, also born in Worcester Co., MD. I have him in my online genealogy: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/. Just go to the "turnparker" database. There is this disclaimer: this genealogy is the best that I can do for now, based on available sources. It is hard to find primary sources for 18th Century people. In other words, it is a work in progress. So if you discover any information on this Turner family, primary source or otherwise, please let me know. I would love to find proof of who Sampson's parents are. Mary's parents were Zadoc Turner b. 1729 Worcester Co. Maryland and died 1819 in Hancock Co. Ga. and his wife was Sabra Hick b. 1730. Sampson and Zadoc were both Revolutionary War Soldiers for Maryland. I can not find proof of where Sampson was born. No one has ever proven Sampson for the DAR, so I have to prove his place of birth as a new patriot. His military papers only state that he fought for Maryland. Any ideas or suggestion would be greatly appreciate. Hugh Turner - b 1795 PA - d 1869 Iowa married (Oct 1819) Mary Cain b 1790 Ireland - d 1853 (presumably in Iowa) This PA connection would seem far fetched, except that very recent DNA results show an exact match between some GA/FLA Turners and My PA Turners. 2. I would invite my gg grandpa William Turner, born 1815 in Ohio. He was first married to Rhoda Haley, then to Elizabeth Hisel (possibly a former married name). His son Ambrose, married to Nellie Cain was my great grandpa. I would love to know who his parents and siblings were. 3. I surely would love to be at that Thanksgiving dinner with a DNA swab kit to collect some cheek samples from Miles Allen Turner before he started wolfing down that Turkey. It would be very very interesting to see what the haplogroup on him would be! If you know of any male Turners directly descended from Miles Allen Turner or brothers or cousins, would you get one of them to join the Turner DNA Project to document that line? Gail R. 3. I would like to ask Abraham Turner b. 17 Sept. 1718 in Guilford, New Haven, CT., and who married first Elizabeth Evarts and secondly Thankful Gough (Goff) who his parents and grandparents were. Was he related to Humphrey Turner? Abraham and Elizabeth had a son, Abraham Jr. who married Sarah Niles. They had a son, Artemus who removed to Lower Canada (Quebec) before 1798 and married Elizabeth Dunham. This branch of the Turner family is still in Canada today, however I never see any referance to them. Anybody on the list researching this line of Turners?
