    2. James Turner, Jr., left an inventory which named his wife "Patty". Usually "Patty" or "Patsy" is a nickname for Martha not Jane. Patty is listed in James' probate from Franklin Co., VA. Jeanette -----Original Message----- From: genieb@cddn.com To: turner@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 11:25 AM Subject: Re: [TURNER] James Turner mar. Jane Anderson That makes sense but it also brings up the question of maternity for some of James' children. The James that died ca 1802 in Franklin Co., VA has a probate record and a copy should be arriving in my mailbox soon. You would know that my ancestor's DOB would fall in this questionable time frame. Does anyone have any idea when Jane Anderson Turner died? OR, when the 2nd marriage took place? That would help determine which children belonged to which wife. 3. You can use the BOOK feature in Family Tree Maker to automatically do what you are doing manually. You can specify what reports you want included and it will also create an index for you. Locate the individual you want as the primary person for your "book". Then, click on BOOKS in the menu. Name your book. You should then have a list of available items you can include in the book. Those include: Notes Ancestor Tree Ancestor Fan Tree Vertical Ancestor Tree Descendant Tree Descendant Fan Tree Hourglass Tree Hourglass Fan Tree Kinship Report Outline Descendant Tree Family Group Sheet Genealogy Report Map Timeline Table of Contents Index of Individuals Calendar Custom Reports You can also add photos to blank pages. You can add Introduction, Preface, Foreword, Dedication or Copyright Notice pages. If you need more direction, click on HELP on the Menu bar. Click Search and type in BOOK and click List Topics. Select a topic from the list and click Display. I hope this helps. Donald, I have done a combination book for my family. I use the reports I made in Family Tree Maker 2006 (without that I'm not sure how I would get an index of individuals). Then I included several other sections with tabbed dividers. One section was family photos (I use my color laser printer and a tough paper); another is of maps of what the states looked like plus state maps showing where the counties are. Still another section is scanned pages from family bibles. A narrative is included as well but for someone to find a particular person, that index is invaluable. One of my daughters did a strictly narrative one of her paternal ancestors and I can never find anyone for there is no index! Good luck and I know your family will love what your are doing. I assume you have done the DNA test and know which line you connect with. 2. Jay & Carol Menges
    3. Donald, Several good ideas to answer your question below have been given through the TURNER Mailing List. I'll add a couple more. Don't forget that RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project website (which is also cloned by Ancestry.com's Family Trees website, I think they still call it) has been advancing the availability of TURNER data to researchers worldwide for years now. It's free, easy to set up, easy to update, etc. Yes, eventually someone will die or quit updating it for one reason or another, and then the data won't continue to improve as it did in the past. Books do the same thing: once they're published, mostly they don't become "new and improved" over time; but they still have great value for what they are. Same thing with the websites. And yes, there are many problems about the information's accuracy because much of what's out there is speculative. Even the best original documents can have errors. I look at it this way: I've done the best I can at the moment with what I have; I don't claim to have done any better than that; I then have laid out my good, not so good, and who-knows-whether-it's-very-good-or-not clues for anyone to toss around themselves, so that we can maybe get some new ideas of how to proceed--such as if I had taken my paper notes to a conference, laid them out on a table for researchers with the same basic goals as mine, and said, "What do you think of all this? Any suggestions?" More people than I can remember have been glad the website has been there because it's a compilation of many, many people's work over a long period of time. I cite my sources--there are still a few pages of my earliest work there that need some tweaking in this--in accordance with standards that are acceptable in the genealogical world since cyber sharing of information made it imperative that we learn a way to do citations for these purposes in an organized fashion. For all the many wonderful and helpful researchers who've been glad to see what I have-- some who have posted Post-em's at some of the webpages (showing more data than I'd previously known)--there will be one or two with negative comments that I've stopped trying to reason around. It's a futile effort most of the time. So I try to focus on my purposes for doing the research and let it be available to whoever can use it. Hopefully they'll use it properly, just as one would hope when publishing hardcopy = books. The other idea is to offer a copy of your hardcopies to BYU's Family History collection because your books will be scanned (I believe that's how they're managing this project) online, searchable word for word, which will then allow us at our home computers to read what's there no matter where in the world one lives. There are thousands of these already available and more every month. They've been working on this for some time now, entering in all the family histories that used to be shelved altogether at Salt Lake's Family History Library. I can't imagine a greater way to reach a wider audience, which is a big part of my purpose. If I can reach the cousins many times beyond the immediate family--the ones who actually received just the records nobody closer to me has--it just could be that they will be willing to correct what I don't know or lines I have gotten mixed up through best-guess conclusions that don't work too well but seemed to be pretty much on the right track, or to add information to what's already there that *is* correct. There is a great deal of argument about the efficacy of this approach. I don't want to extend the argument further except to suggest it isn't a good approach. What IS helpful are the efforts of kind-hearted people who work together to achieve something we cannot possibly do all on our own. We've all benefited from somebody else's work, obviously, whether it was the original document recorder or someone else. We can thank each other and our ancestors for all of it. In the end, what your decision is regarding how you give your information away depends on who you want to give it to, how long you want to work on it anyway, how extensive you care to record extended family lines, etc.--in other words, what your objectives are. When you decide those things, you can determine what to do to enable you to meet your own goals. There is not just any one way to go about genealogical research. In these days of the World Wide Web and computer technology to keep it all in order and easily searchable, we have room for our own brands of encyclopedic knowledge to share in ways never before imagined. Enjoy whatever you choose to do. You'll find your own limitations, and your best efforts will be good enough. --Carol (Huffington > Turner) Menges > Message: 1 > Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 08:21:32 -0600 > From: "Donald Turner" <dturner8@hot.rr.com> > Subject: [TURNER] Fw: How do you give all of your the information to > your family ? > To: <turner@rootsweb.com> SNIP> > What form have most people used to make this information available to > other members of the family? 3. Narrative reports are a good way to share one's family research with people who are not particularly interested in looking at a computer database. I like to share ANCESTOR reports with notes, sources and an index beginning with the branch of the family in question. Having some paper reports are important because electronic data could disappear if people don't update over time their computers, media and programs. One can print out the narrative, and print out selected pictures, maps, diagrams, pedigree charts and have the entire document bound at a place like Kinkos or Staples. Office Max, etc. The disadvantage to a narrative report is that you don't get parents & siblings of the spouses, etc. that someone wanting other clues to pursue might be interested in. It is important to include the sources since 20 years from now someone may pick up your book and decide they want to continue where you left off. To send "everything" you might want to do it by sharing your entire database. I have purchased copies of my favorite genealogy program (RootsMagic) for my siblings and update their files about once per year. I have put the old family pictures collected over a period of years on a DVD. Each person was given a copy. With most of the more popular genealogy programs one can also create a web site which can be put on a cd or dvd and be opened on the recipients computer with one's web browser. But there again, like the narrative reports, one would not get every single person in one's database. So I would tailor the format for each person you share with to what you think that individual or family would most enjoy. Donald Hi Donald, Your letter could be from my father, who is a Turner, up until the computer part. He got really discouraged and gave up. No amount of encouragement to get him on line has worked. He has the everything in photo albums. I have taken his tree and put it into my Family Tree Maker program, which is a wonderful program coupled with ancestry.com. I started my research as a newbie to both computers and family research following in my Aunts footsteps. She took a little from both her Family Tree Maker program and raw data and made the most wonderful books that she sold at our family reunion. The money is used to help cover the cost of material for the book and for our reunion costs. She went to a craft store and got a photo album that has a picture frame type cover and put the family name on the cover. She then started with the older generations and told their story in pictures and whatever items she had for each child. She is now going to do the next generation in the same manner. What a lovely keepsake which can also be recopied for all your children. Now if I can get my father to follow suit I would be very happy! Good luck with whatever project you decide to do. Best regards Linda Turner Murphy

    2. Sarah-- Where in SC did your Turners come from? Mine came from Marlboro Co. SC and went from there to Henry and Fayette Counties in GA. My Turners were Melungeons, also known as "Black Dutch." Were your Turners unusually tall? My gr-grandfather Miles Allen Turner (b. 11-2-1859 Coweta Co. GA/d.8-8-1940 Polk Co. GA) stood 6' 8" and wore size 16 shoes. I have several photos of him, also one photo of his father Peter Turner (b. ca. 1834 in SC). Peter is sitting down in the photo but also appears to be quite tall and long-legged with classic Melungeon features. Peter Turner married Frances Barrentine, b. ca. 1836 Marlboro Co. SC. They married 1857 in Fayette Co. GA. Peter was son of James Turner and Anna Mitchell. --Lamar Wadsworth

    3. Lamar, I'm not absolutely sure these are my Turners and I don't know where they lived in SC but they did live in Henry County in GA. One of my Turners was very tall, well over 6 foot. I don't know how tall his father or his grandfather were. However, none of his siblings were extremely tall. I'm not sure what classic Melungeon features look like but I do have photos of several of my Turner family, even one of the oldest proven ancestor, William Beverly Turner, b. in GA, died in Cobb County, GA, buried in Powder Springs Methodist Cemetery, Powder Springs, GA (Cobb Co.) -----Original Message----- From: turner-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:turner-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of lw.sou.ry.steam@juno.com Sent: Tuesday, December 26, 2006 7:20 PM To: turner@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TURNER] Andrew Turner, b. about 1800 in SC,lived in Oglethorpe a nd Henr...
