Hi Lee, I ordered a book yesterday on P.T. Barnum and expect to receive it in two weeks. I am going to the library and see if they may have more info too. We have another connection, with Ringling Bros Circus as my Charles Gorst married either Bailey's sister or daughter. I wonder if there may be some connection. There has to be some connection between these Turner's and the Turk family that adopted Antoinette too because two male Turk's lived in the same block in Chicago as Agnes and her girls then suddenly Antoinette was adopted by a Turk family in Black Earth, Wisconsin. This seems too much of a co-incidence for there not to be a connection. I just hope I am not jumping to a conclusion here but it seems logical to me. The information you sent is extremely interesting and I do appreciate all the work you are going to for me. I have found people on this list to be most helpful and considerate. Again Lee, Thanks. I will keep you posted on what I find. Take care, Dee

A friend (who has no computer to assist in her genealogy research) has asked for help locating info about her greatgrandfather: John Woodson TURNER, b.@ 1857, lived in Fayette Co. Texas, m. Mary Emma Huffman (his son) Leonard Franklin TURNER, b. 1892, m. Dovie Emaline Farris (his son) Clifton Lloyd TURNER, b. 1921 She has a LOT of genealogy information about the family but cannot trace this John Woodson back. (She'd be happy to share!) If you have any information just e-mail me and I will pass it on. Happy Hunting Linda
Thank you Lee for your offer of help. I am looking forward to learning more about this Turner family P. T. Barnum wrote about. This has been an extremely difficult search and while I have done some reading on Circus's I never looked into P. T. Barnum. I did however write to Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin but they tell me they have no records of this family. Again, thank you so much. Dee

This I promise is the last message. I would like more info on this Turner family. Some of the early info has come from Turner researchers. James Turner born ca 1775 Albermerle Co Virginia, died abt 1825 Wilson County, Tennessee. He was the son of Francis Turner, Sr and Elizabeth. He married Ann Reeves the d/o George Reeves and Mary Young. (remember marriage records Franklin Co VA with Reeves, Young, Turner) I have 4 children listed: 1. Jerimiah Turner born 1799 VA, married Wilson Co TN 15 February 1820 to Nancy Hancock 2. Lucinda Turner married Wilson Co., 21 May 1822 to George Phillips. (did either of these or their children move to Van Buren, Searcy, or Carroll/Boone Counties in Arkansas?) these are the two I really am interested in: 3. John Turner born 1803 Patrick Co VA, died aft 1847. Married Katherine Turney, born 1806, d/o George Turney and Catherine Barger. She grew up in Smith Co TN. I would like to know who their children are. Some of the Turneys moved to Alabama in 1818-1820, some to Arkansas in late 1830s. In both places living near the Turneys are Turner and I wonder if they might be cousins. 4. Francis L. Turner born 1804 Patrick Co Va., died aft 1870 TN. Married abt 1825 TN to Elizabeth Turney. Elizabeth was born 1805 TN, died aft 1860 TN, was the d/o George Turney and Catherine Barger. I do have names of 9 children from them. George Turner born 1822 Issac Turner born 1828 Rachel Turner born 09 January 1831 Sarah B Turner born 1834 Francis Turner born 18 January 1839 Dekalb Co TN, died 04 April 1917 Ellis County, Texas. married 1860 Dekalb Co TN to Mary Ashworth Elizabeth Turner Joseph Turner William Turner John Turner born 1836 as I said, 3 of the Turneys moved to Arkansas in 1830s. In 1815-1818 some of the Turneys moved to St Clair and Morgan Co Alabama where they connect to Gandy, Looney, Cooper, Greer families - some of them by 1860 were in Texas. sorry - made a big mistake, this is a corrected copy. I have found the following and not sure if he is a Turney or a Turner OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN Their Early Court Records in Southwest Virginia compiled by Anne Lowry Worell pension records Montgomery County VA page 64 Teaney, Daniel. Filed Sept. 1832. Aged 75. Enlisted in New Providence, Philadelphia Co., PA., in 1776, served until 1777. Subs. for his brother, Henry Teaney. Names officers, Capts. John Edwards; Arnold Francis; Wm. Davis; James Tate; John Dickey. Cols. Faniel Heister, John Bull; last two tours were in Augusta Co., VA. (my note - if 75 years old in 1832, he was born ca 1757. Some of my Turneys - Daniel and Henry - were in PA at that time.) As I said, expecially in 1700s the Turney and Turner names are often mixed-up. By 1800 the records seem to usually be correct. Except I had an Isaac Turney in Arkansas I could not find his War of 1812 records - and he seemed to have had a difficult time proving his service. Turned down first time he applied for a pension, but got it on the second try. When I finally found his service record at Natl. Ar. on the outside of records he was listed as Isaac Turner. So watch out for that. Mary Turney Miller hlm@qtm.net

In doing 1840 Van Buren County Arkansas census research on my Turney line, some of the other families in that census come out of Franklin County Virginia in 1790s. So I made a note of the Turner marriages also and will pass on. Franklin County Virginia Marriage Records 1786 through 1806 from OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN compiled by Anne Lowry Worell Turner, George and Elizabeth Greer. Joseph Greer, sur. - Dec. 2, 1805 Turner, Isham and Elizabeth Young, dau. Catherine and Allen Redley Young - Mar. 16, 1792 Turner, Isiah and Elizabeth Candy. Jas. Prunty, sur. - Dec. 9, 1797 Turner, James and Elizabeth Brown, mar. ret. by J.J. - Jan 4, 1791. Turner, James and Mary Mallery, dau. Richard Mallery - Dec. 21, 1790. Turner, James and Lydda Rentfro, dau. Joseph Rentfro - Jan 13, 1787. Turner, Jermiah and Rachel Ross, dau. Daniel Ross - Apr. 21, 1792. There are no Turner on the 1840 VBC Arkansas census, but many of the families have a connection to this Franklin Co VA. Rentfro/Renfro was a minister and married several of these families. My Potter family is here - marrys a Kirdy - and later the family 1840 AR. Young, Owen, Reeves - they are all in Franklin Co VA 1790s and then 1840 in Arkansas. I have not filled in the middle section which would be Tennessee I am sure. Some of them had siblings who in 1830s moved to Searcy Co Arkansas and there are Turner located there. In 1820s in Tennessee two Turney sisters marry two Turner brothers. These Turner are the sons of James Turner the son of Francis Turner Sr and wife Elizabeth of VA. The wife of James Turner was Ann Reeves d/o George Reeves and Mary Young. All of these surnames live near each other in TN in 1820s, then show up in 1840 Arkansas. Mary
My Turney family was in Frederick, Dunmore, Shenandoah Co Virginia from 1750s to 1787. 1762-1787 they lived next to Abraham Bird near Woodstock, Virginia. Now in these early records I have found two cases where Turner and Turney names are mixed up. Incorrect marriage record SHENANDOAH COUNTY VIRGINIA Marriage Bonds 1772-1850 compiled by Bernice M. Ashby page 9 TURNER, Michl. --- Mathaney, Elender. Sept. 19, 1785. Bondsman: Danl. Mathaney. this one is Michael TURNEY born 1760 in VA, the son of Peter and Eva Turney of Woodstock VA area. Daniel Matheny lived near them. Michael Turney and his brother Daniel Turney married two daughters of Daniel Matheny - Susan and Ellender. In 1787 the Turneys and Mathenys all sell their Virginia land and move to KY. (in same area where Turner family also moves.) Hampshire County Va (WVA) land record Under the name TERNAY 9/3/1787 Michael TERNAY and wife Phoebe sell to James Murphy: (both of Hampshire Co.) 1/2 acre lot in town of Romney recorded 9/13/1787 Witnesses: Alex Ruthven, Rub. Holiday, Ralph Humphreys, John Murphy. This is Michael Turner with his Murphy wife. They end up 1787 moving to KY. They are from the Maryland Turner Murphy family according to some Turner researchers. Hampshire County is now West VA and the area is not that far away from Woodstock VA where my Turney family was at this time. So please be aware that in early records, Turney and Turner were often mixed up. Or you get Ternay, Tunni, Tunnis, etc. which could be either one. Some Turney researchers in 1930s working on DAR papers got the families all mixed up. I am sure they found some of the Turner info and put it into the Turney family. They have the Turney family married into Murphy from Maryland, going to Culpepper Co Virginia. What I have found on my one Turney is that he arrived PA 1741, moved into Northern Neck of VA and then Shenandoah Valley. 1787 was the move to KY for some, 1770s three of them moved into Eastern Tennessee. One was Eve Turney who married John Teeter. Maybe that will help some of you. I have also gotten some info on a Darby Murphy - he had two grandsons in his will who were Turner. If that is your line, let me know. I don't have a lot but glad to share. Mary
In reference to the will of Edward Turner St Marys Co MA1772 I have searched MD for a Turney and keep turning up Turner surname. My cousin lives in that area and I sent her out to the local cemetery but all she found were Turner. Remember that in early documents the names get turned around. Often a Turney is listed as a Turner. I am looking for a Henry Turney who died 1836 in Smith Co Tennessee near where my Henry Turney lived. I at first thought maybe a Turner had changed his name to Turney, but now am sure he was always a Turner. According to pension records: Henry Turney born 1 January 1753 Nanjemoy Maryland, served in Rev War in North Carolina (suspect he went there as a young boy). He then is in Davidson County NC/TN where he married Martha Lancaster in 1788. 1789 he moves to Smith County Tennessee where in 1831 he marrys a Nancy Jones. He applies for pension in 1833, died in 1836, his widow applied for pension in 1838. The area in Maryland where I am looking for this Henry Turney is full of Murphy/Turner people. (more on some of those in another message). This area of MD I have found is covered by Durham Parish the early Anglican / Espiscopal Church established there in 1692. I understand the Charles County Community College has a lot of the info I need, they were closed for renovation when I was there and supposed to reopen fall of 1998. I have not since had time to check on this. I live in Michigan, so I guess I need to plan a trip next year to the area. In the Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War - William Turney a member Captain Hezikiah Garner's Co in 1777, in Charles Co. MD. Henry Turney was already in North Carolina so I wonder if this is a Turney or a Turner. I was told there were Turney headstones in Nanjemoy Baptist Church Cemetery, but I think these are also Turner, not Turney. Do any of you Turner researchers for this area have a Turner who does not fit, who might be from the Turney family? I think I know the father of this Henry Turney born 1753 in Maryland. Think it might be a Johannes Thurny born 1725 Switzerland, or John Turney. This family lived in same place in Switzerland, same time as mine. I have ship ST ANDREW 1750 arrival Philadelphia, PA with a Johannes Turny and a Peter Balsam. (this family in Switzerland - Johannes had a sister married to Peter Balsel). Also have Johannes Tourne and Barbara had a daughter 1757 in Frederick Maryland. John Turney of Frederick Co MD naturilized 1761. Am I in the right ballpark? Any documents which say Turner but might be this Turney family? Thank you for the help. Mary
Dear Turner list, I have been lurking in the shadows reading your list for several months. Today I got an early Christmas present from you. I am a Turney researcher, but find I have had to know a little something about the Turner surname in the early years. These are two different families, but there is a connection between two Turner brothers who married two Turney sisters in 1825 Tennessee. Your last messages have two things I would like to help clear up. I will do this with seperate messages. In early records up to about 1800 sometimes you can not tell if the name is Turney or Turner - I have found about 30 spellings of the Turney name and sometimes it is Turner. Sometimes Ternay, Turnni, etc which could be either one. Also, the two families do appear in some of the same places at the same time. It does not help that the Turney family was German speaking from Switzerland, and some of the Turner might also have been German speaking. this adds spice to the research. First - the message from David Costner - material taken from Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800 by Lewis Preston Summers. 1788 John Turney married Rebekah McMahan....this is mine. He was the son of Henry Turney who finally settled in Smith/Dekalb Co TN. John had a son named John G (Gilliam?) Turney born 1801 TN who married 1824 Jefferson Co Alabama to Elizabeth DeLoach. So this is a Turney - they were in Alabama, then Mississippi. 1774 a Michael Tomey was fined.....thought this might be Michael Turney but not sure Washington Co VA 1783 Henry Turner - case with Henry Herklerode.....this is a Turney 1779 Henry Turney appraisses estate of Martin Statzer - we always assumed this was a Turney 1778 Peter Turney - court.....a Turney (he was brother to my Henry Turney and died in Dixon Springs TN; was the father of lawyer Samuel Turney and Hopkins Lacey Turney who was a Senator; Peter was the grandfather of Col. Peter Turney of the 1st TN regiment in 1860s and later Governor of Tennessee) 1779 Henry Turney - case with Henry Harkleroad.....Turney 1779 Peter Turney - common law new causes.....Turney 1781 Peter Turney - jury......Turney Soldiers of different wars All of that on Peter Turney....a Turney. He was in Evan Shelby's unit at Battle of Point Pleasant. Later in Cherokee Expedition. Evan Shelby ended up with land near present day Bristol TN, my Henry Turney owned land ca 1774 next to him. Henry in Rev War was at Ft Nashborough NC (nashville TN) and rec 640 acres for his service. In early 1800s he was in Hawkins Co TN, by 1811 near Liberty Smith Co TN. Two of Henry Turney's grand-daughters marry into Turner family. Also in Washington Co VA in 1770s is Eve Turney who married John Teeter - she is the sister of Peter and Henry Turney out of Shenandoah Co VA. More later. Mary Turney Miller
This material is pulled from the 2 vols. of Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800 by Lewis Preston Summers. I trust I have found all the Turners. Botetourt County, VA 1788 Francis Turner was grantee 43 acres on West Fork Little River 1787 Francis Turner was grantee 194 acres on Rush Fork Little River 1803 Ezekial Turner married Sarah Hornd, father Wm Hornd. 1788 John Turney married Rebekah McMahan, father Mechart McMahan (Note name of this man is spelled different) None of the above names were indexed but were in alphabetically listings. 1774 a Michael Tomey was fined for no serving as juryman. Note spelling difference. Montgomery County, VA 1799 Thomas Turner was appointed oversee of the road from William Pepper's to Addairs Ferry. (indexed) 1781 James Turner was grantee of 400 acres on S. Fork Greasy C. Br. New R. 1796 Thomas Turner was grantee of 80 acres on headwaters of Plumb C. from John Ellis. Washington County, VA 1783 Henry Turner was the defendant incase with Henry Herklerode plaintiff. No idea what the problem was - had attornies and jury. 1779 Henry Turney (note spelling) appraissses the estate of Martin Statzer 1779 Henry Turney and Henry Hutton were defendants with Henry Harkleroad, plaintiff. Nothing more noted. 1778 Peter Turney was listed in index but couldn't find on page but it dealt with court procedures and long list of names. 1779 Peter Turney under Common Law New Causes vs Edward Bond, dismissed. 1781 Peter Turney jury formed in case Edward Bond vs Peter Turney defendant in case. After county information on Botetourt, Fincastle, Montgomery, Washington, Wythe there was a list of soldiers from different wars. Not indexed but usually in alphabetical order. Revolutinary Soldiers Peter Torney served in Captain Evan Shelby's Company of volunteers from Watauga Valley in Fincastle County. Peter is listed twice under Cap. Shelby's group - both times as Torney Cherokee Expedition - 1776 under Col. William Christian as private served Peter Turney In Capt. Daniel Smith's co. at Elk Garden Fort in 1774 was Joseph Turner Very few Turners found in this area considering the book was 1635 pages. Hope this helps someone, however. Deana Dcost@compuserve.com

Hello, I desperately need help to find the following information: ____________Turner married Agnes M.______________ Mr. Turner supposedly died before 1885 and family legend has him dying in a trapeze accident in a circus. They were supposedly from Toronto, Canada. However, Agnes and daughters Antoinette and Electa/Electra ended up living in Chicago, Oak Park in the years 1886, 1887, 1888 at 522 Washington Blvd. Agnes worked for Leahy & Co and had a boarder Eugene L. Turner. Agnes died of typhoid fever in 16 Dec 1888 at St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago. Have her death certificate which tells very little. Does anyone recognize this family? We've hit a stone wall on this and need all the help we can get. Thank you all in advance for any ideas. DeeAnn Ludden Moore P.S. Antoinette was adopted by Fred and Grack Turk of Black Earth, Wis.
Hi List! I am trying to find some information on my GG Grandfather, Green B. Turner who is from the Tigerville, SC area (also known as the Dark Corner). He was married to Harriett Pittman. They raised my Great-Grandmother (not sure who her biological parents are), Roxie Turner who was born October 8, 1892 in Tigerville, SC and she died in June 1969 in Atlanta, GA. She is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Greenville, SC. It is believed that Green B. Turner had a brother by the name of Malcolm Turner who married Corrie (sp ?) Hawkins. Malcolm and Corrie had a son named Carl. These Turners were moonshiners. It is believed that Green B. Turner was jailed in March of 1877 for making and selling moonshine. This is how people who lived in the "Dark Corner" (Tigerville, SC) made a living. If anyone has any info. to share, please let me know. Thanks, Shonda Smith

Hello Tom Evans, We seem to be searching the same part of Indiana. Do you have parents for Reuben Turner? My Turner ancestors lived in Switzerland County. Before that, they lived in Virginia. Does that sound like a match with what you know about your ancestors? Phil Turner
