    1. [TURNER-L] Shirley Turner's book: Eng, Ire., NC, MO
    2. Hi, I am looking for information on how to contact SHIRLEY J. TURNER who wrote a genealogy paper entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of Fielding Turner: England, Ireland, NC and MO". It was submitted to the Family History Writing Contest of the NGS in 1983. At that time, Shirley was living in Tucson, AZ. Can anyone give me information on her? Thanks, Pam PSulzer@aol.com

    1. [TURNER-L] TURNER, Thomas Lafayette, 1867-1919, Tn>Ky
    2. Thomas Lafayette went to Christian Co, Ky some time before Nov. 1, 1896, as that is the date that he married Miss Jimmie Lee Vaughn. To this union was born Henry Leander on Nov. 19, 1889 in Christian Co, Ky. Henry wed Miss Ella Robinson in Cloves, NM, Sept, 1930 Thomas (Tom) left this earth after being thrown from a mule and dragged to death. Thomas had the following siblings; Charles, Will, Flavins, Nannie, "Sister," all believed to have been born in Tn and migrated to Ky. Sure hope someone "knows" these people! Mary

    1. [TURNER-L] More English Turners (mine Lancashire to NewEngland, 1850)
    2. My English Turners (anybody recognize them?): James and Thomas, born 1832 and 1834, Lancashire England, supposedly in Bury, near Manchester, but I haven't been able to find their christening records yet. Other siblings possible. Parents Robert and Sarah. Possibly the Robert and Sarah (Schofield) married 1830 in Prestwich, Lancashire, England, but not established for certain. James and Thomas emigrated to the US in 1850, were cotton mill weavers in Providence, New Bedford, and Salem, MA, and fought in the Civil War out of the Rhode Island Volunteers. James settled and had family in Haverhill, MA. ********* I haven't been doing much with this line lately, due to frustration at lack of immediate success, but I plan to restart soon. For English research, I use my Family History Center. I've had great luck with other English lines, but then again, they emigrated later-- 1870s and 80s. I think it's tougher the earlier you go, especially if your last guy out was born pre-1837, which is when English Civil Registration started. Also, it depends how long your people stayed in one parish. If they moved around a lot, like my Industrial Revolution-worker Turners, then they become tougher to trace back.

    3. Thanks to Barbara Ware, I have learned my great-grandfather's name: Monroe TURNER, born between 1855-1890. Monroe married Maggie HENDERSON and they had Alcus Alvin TURNER in Pensacola, FL in 1907. Alcus was in the army during WW2 and later lived in Lakeland, Polk Co., FL. He worked as a meat cutter for Publix Markets in Lakeland, Alcus married: 1. Blondie Mae FORD in North Carolina about 1930. In Kings MT, NC, they had twin boys, Alvin Alcus, Jr. (not sure why he was a "junior" when his first and middle names were the reverse of his father's), and Alton, born dead. The twins each had one green eye and one blue. Having seen my father's (Alvin's) eyes a million times (+/- 100,000) or so, I can verify that to be true for him. Alcus married: 2. Someone and they had Several Others. Alcus married: 3. Hester and they had No One. Alcus died 1958 during a visit to Tampa, FL. Any information on Monroe Turner, Maggie Henderson, or Alcus Turner will be gladly exchanged where possible and truly appreciated.

    1. [TURNER-L] LISTOWNER POST re: GENCONNECT
    2. Carol C-H
    3. If any of you are RootsWeb members and would like to manage the GenConnect boards for this surname, they became available this month (separate ones for wills, pensions, bios, obits, deeds, bible records, and queries). http://cgi.rootsweb.com/%7Egenbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html http://cgi.rootsweb.com/%7Egenbbs/AdminCenter/maint.html The GenConect boards work best in tandem with the list, if I understand it correctly - it certainly looks as if they would help us. When search engines look for surnames, these boards will show up. Cousins not on the list will also see our posts. Hopefully, they will join us for research and working together on the list, but the boards should get more attention from surfers. The wills, deeds, bios, etc. boards are for adding data so that we will all have the opportunity to look at it online easily. The person in charge of the board is sent a copy by e-mail of everything that is entered, as it is entered. There is also an e-mail list for folks who are managing the boards, and questions can be asked there if there is something you do not understand. 3. The technician at Ancestry.com told me that they are working on the site throughout the month (one reason for the free promotion). He said if there were problems accessing the site during that time, wait a while and try again. If you still cannot connect, you should make sure that you have selected "Accept all cookies" in the Preferences or Options (Advanced) dialogue box of your browser. Then you should close and reopen your browser. There is no need to restart your computer. If you are an Ancestry.com subscriber, you do not need to log-in during the promotion month. Before I knew the site was open to all, my attempts to log-in brought up the user name/password error screen. After following the technician's suggestions, (cookies, close, open, no log-in) I was able to connect, search and browse without difficulty.
