Listers, I'm seeking to find the parents of Victor Turner b 1875 d 1917 m Lula Mae Dooley. Victor's parents were Turner and Cooley and Lula's were W.H. Dooley and Anderson. Their first son Paul Wm Turner, Sr was born 1900 in Stoutsville, Mo. Does any one have any of these surname families in this area at this time period. I'de sure love to get beyond this wall. Hello Philip and all on the list: I will briefly quote Leyburns' classic "The Scotch Irish" about James Patton. "An enterprising agent, James Patton served both Beverley and Borden in their effort to attract colonists. A native of Ireland and "bred at sea" Patton served in the royal Navy. He later became owner of a ship of his own, carrying on trade between Britian and the Rappahannock River. He is said to have crossed the Atlantic 25 times, carrying abroad cargoes of peltries and tobacco, and returning WITH ULSTERMAN." Many Scots-Irish who came with James Patton settled in Virginia. There were some Scots-Irish Turners who settled in North Carolina and gave the land for UNC. I believe this family may have come with the Pattons. Regards, Vesta
Nancy, Just one more thought about Pauline Fake's book. I have studied several books on the history of the Eastern Shore. Recently, I came across the following one, which seems to be well done: Torrence, Clayton, 1884-1953. Old Somerset on the eastern shore of Maryland; a study in foundations and founders. With a foreword by J. Millard Tawes. Baltimore, Regional Pub. Co., 1966. xvi, 583 p. 24 cm. First published in 1935. All have one thing in common: there is no mention of William Turner, Presbyterian minister. Clayton Torrece's book devotes 61 pages to the "Children of the Covenant." He mentions the following ministers: Francis Makemie, William Traile, Samuel Davis, Thomas Wilson, John Hampton, George McNish, William Stewart, Patrick Glasgow, John Clement(s), Henry Hunter, Hugh Stevenson, Charles Tennent and John Rogers. I think that William Turner was probably NOT a minister. He might have been a member of the flock or even an elder, but that was all. Phil Turner
Nancy, Thanks for setting the record straight. I agree with you that you simply cannot take information from secondary sources "on faith." If at all possible, you have to go to the primary sources to confirm what was said. Having said that, primary sources are often missing due to fire, flood or war. Many of our ancestors were so thoughtless as to leave very little in the way of a written record of their lives. For these reasons, oral history and family tradition are often the only sources available. I was aware that Pauline Fake's book had some factual errors, but I did not know their extent. I am retiring in about a month. Then I am going to drive to the Eastern Shore and check the libraries and court houses for information on those elusive Turners. I'll post a report on what I find when I get back. Hope you can wait until then. Phil Turner

Phillip, I have the book you just spoke of entitled "Traditional Ancestors of James Turner (1758-1828)" and am a member of a portion of that Turner family group and am sorry to say it has HUGE problems. The first, but not only one, is the fact that James Turner b 1758 d 1828 Morgan Co. Ga, whose children are listed in his will and in the book has NOT been proven to be a descendant of the William Turner family of Snow Hill Maryland who was the minister of the Scottish Sect. It gets worse from there, but I just wanted you to know that. I have spent soooooo much time on this and since Mrs. Fake died in 1978, and placed some copies in a few libraries, there is no way to "make it go away." If you have any interest in those particular lines, there are those of us working on both parts, the real descendants of the William of MD group and those of us who are related to James Turner b 1758. I posted the first part of the book to this list a couple of years ago and it is in the Turner-L archives at rootsweb. Vesta, Who was James Patton? Also, have you seen the following book? It tells about a family of Scottish Turners who settled in Snow Hill, MD. The author traces their descendants in Georgia and other southern states, but these could be our ancestors too. I will keep you and the list informed of any worthwhile info I find. I believe that James Patton's boat docked in Accomack County (correct me if I'm wrong). So many Ulster Irish came thru Accomack...maybe most of my family tree! I think the typical pattern of migration was that the 3rd and 4th generations went to Ky, Ohio, & Ind. Regards, Vesta

Hi Patricia(?) Sorry, but I don't have any answers, just an observation. I am an EDMUNDS / TURNER descendant. I see that you have a Thomas Edmonds, born 1691, who married an Ann Turner. My earliest identified EDMUNDS ancestor is a William Edmunds, born c1685 (possibly earlier), who died in Surry Co, Virginia 1739/40. He may be the son of an earlier William Edmunds who died in Charles City Co, VA. This earlier William likely would have been a contemporary of your Thomas, b. 1655. Also, my William appears to have a close relative and contemporary named Howell Edmunds. Descendants of both William and Howell Edmunds had ties to Turner families in VA. "Thomas" was a very popular name among the descendants of Howell Edmunds. Other allied families in VA include GERRARD (Jarrett), HAMLIN, WYCHE, JONES, and possibly LANIER. Do you have any siblings for your Thomas, b. 1655? My gr gr gr gr grandfather is Smith Turner (b. @1750, d. 1831). He served in the Continental Army at Valley Forge and at Germantown, and was also in the Virginia Navy (i.e. privateer). He had one son, William, who was born in 1782. In 1806, Smith Turner and his (second) wife, Abigail (Melson) (Pruit) sold their land in Accomack Co., and moved west with some of their children. Smith, Abigail and William settled in Switzerland Co., IN. William appeared on the voter rolls as early as 1807. William also married Abigail's daughter, Tabitha Pruit, and they produced eight children, four of whom were boys. John W. Turner was one of William and Tabitha's sons and he was born in 1813. He lived his whole life in Switzerland Co., as did his three brothers, William, Smith and Isaac. John W. is my gr gr grandfather. Interestingly enough, the Census records say that John W. was born in Ohio. I have not been able to find out where, or even if he really was born in Ohio. I have been told, but have been unable to confirm, that Smith Turner's father and grandfather were William and Abraham Turner. If this seems to fit with what you have on your Turner family I would be interested in exchanging information with you. Of course, there might have been more than one Turner family in Eastern Shore Virginia. BTW, have you visited the GHOTES web site. It is devoted to the genealogy and history of the Eastern Shore. York Abra Turnor 1648 i This is the material I gathered during this quick trip to Savannah and back. I hope some of you have made a match or have lead to follow. http://198.17.62.51/collections/LO.html Scrolling through land records yesterday I saw a Shadrack Turner. Don't know if it's the same one that has seen a lot of press lately but thought I would mention it. This is a nice site for any surname though. Diana
