I am looking for the parents of Philip Henry TURNER b. abt. 1865 m. Sarah Ann MATTHEWS. They had three children Harry, Algernon, and Ethel Elizabeth all born in Baltimore, Maryland. Anyone with an idea? Gordon Lane
Hi Folks, Possibly the least detail in any request ever coming up.... Anyone out there have a lady in their history who married a John Turner and emmigrated to England. Yeah to, not from. My Great Grandfather John Turner emigrated to the stated and came back with Two Daughters and a Wife. I don't know the Wifes name (I told you this was tenuous) but the two daughters were Mary Jane Turner and Emma May Turner. Mary Jane was born in the U.S. in 1865. Emma May was born in the U.S. in 1867. The family came back to Oldham, Lancashire (Thornham to be precise) in about1869-70. My Great Uncle always insisted we had famility in the U.S and visited them a couple of times, but he's been dead years so no help there. Thanks in Advance. Ian Turner.
Joyce, Sorry to disappoint you, but this is another Smith Turner. Believe it or not there were several men with this strange name living during the 18th and 19th Centuries. It was common practice to use family names as given names. It served several purposes: (a) it honored an ancestor, (b) it reinforced family ties and (c) provided diversity of names in a time when nuclear families were larger and lived in the same community as extended family members. My Smith Turner was born in Accomack Co., VA (or maybe Worcester Co., MD) in about 1750. This is on the Delmarva Peninsula, east of the Chesapeake Bay. He enlisted in a Virginia Regiment that was raised on the Eastern Shore for the Revolutionary War. I have census, land and marriage records that place him in Accomack Co. between 1797 and 1806. Yesterday, I did some research in the DAR Library in Washington, DC and discovered some likely ancestors in Worcester Co., MD. It appears that my Smith Turner is descended from a William Turner, a Presbyterian minister, and Mary McLemore who migrated from Scotland to Northern Ireland and then to Worcester Co., MD in the late 17th Century. The ancestry is as follows: William Turner m. Mary McLemore Elisha Turner m. Elizabeth Hicks William Turner m. Comfort Oxford William Turner m. Elizabeth ______ Smith Turner This is tentative. I have to go to Worcester County and check the land records and will probate records to verify all this. Marriage records are scarce before the 19th Century. The usual way of publishing a marriage was to "post banns." This meant that the intention of a couple to marry was announced from the pulpit of the local church on three successive Sundays. Marriages were recorded, if at all, in the church's vestry book or in the family bible. Keep in mind that these people were Presbyterians which meant that they did not belong to the established chuch in the colony of Maryland (Roman Catholic) nor in Virginia (Episcopal). By the way, if anyone knows of a Bible record that records this family, please let me know. I would like to have a copy very much. I checked my files and would say that he probably is. I have a copy from the internet of the Thomas Turner bible, Smith Turner is listed as the 10th child. You can get a copy of this at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/madison/bibles/1656-001.txt If you are unable to get to it, let me know and I will send it to you as an attachment or snail mail it to you. Thomas Turner was supposedly born in Spotsylvania Co., Va on Aug 27, 1734, son of John Turner and Sarah Williams. He died Dec 9, 1822 in Madison Co., KY. He married Catherine Smith daughter of Andrew Smith & Annah Yeates. John's Father was probably Thomas Turner a quaker. John was born 1705-1714, died 1768. Sarah Williams was born 1710? died 1778? I know that Thomas Turner and Catherine Smith were in Rowan, Yadkin, NC in Aug 13, 1769, their daughter Annah Turner (my direct line) was born there. Annah married Christopher Columbus Martin Jan 25, 1790 in Madison, KT. The 1759 Rowan County Tax List has a Thos Turner listed, don't know if it is ours. I have not checked out this book, but it is supposed to have been thoroughly researched. Hello Turner cousins, I am posting this for the umpteenth time. My oldest known ancestor is Smith Turner who was born about 1750, probably in Accomack Co., VA. I do not know who his parents were. The first contemporaneous record that I have on him is receipt of pay for service during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in the 9th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line. In 1797, he married a widow, Abigail (Melson) Prewitt. This was a second marriage for them both. Smith had a son named William from a previous marriage for which I can find no record. In 1806, Smith and Abigail Turner deeded property to Abigail's son Benjamin Prewitt. Soon after, Smith and William appear on the tax rolls in Dearborn Co., Indiana Territory. When Indiana became a state in 1816, the place where they lived became part of Switzerland Co., IN. They both are recorded on land transactions in Switzerland Co. Most of the land that they owned was in the vicinity of Bennington. Smith died in 1831 and his will left his estate to his widow, Abigail. William Turner married Tabitha Prewitt, the daughter of Abigail. They are supposed to have produced four daughters, of which I can find no record, and four sons: John W. Turner, b. 1813, d. 1886 Smith Turner II, b. 1816, d. 1857 William Turner, b. @1820 Isaac Turner, b. 1830, d. 1903 If you are a descendant, or think you are, of the Turners of Switzerland Co., IN, please reply. I would be happy to exchange information with you. If have any information about the ancestry of Smith Turner, please let me know. I am very anxious to find out. John SHELL m. Betsy TURNER, 19 Feb 1795, Brunswick Co, VA. John's brother, Edmunds Shell, m. Patsey LANE, 16 Dec 1795 , Brunswick Co. I'm searching for descendants of John Shell and Betsy Turner. If this Betsy Turner is the same as Betsy Turner, b. 1 Mar 1773, daughter of James Turner and Elizabeth EDMUNDS, then possibly John Shell was her Edmunds cousin. Lee Turner

Hi, been awhile since I've posted. I'm from the SC Turner's (seems like millions). First one I know of is Thomas Turner who came to SC from Ireland in 1867 (18 yrs old) settled in Pendleton District marr Priscilla Alexander 1771 Had the following children (9 boys and 3 girls): (1)James b 2 Jan 1773 marr Martha Dickey and d 25 Jan 1849 Monroe Co., IL (2) Aaron (don't know anything about Aaron except b SC (3) Alexander b 1777 marr Mary d 29 Apr 1846 IL (4) Moses (nothing known) (5) Sarah Jane marr James Kerr (6) "girl" maybe marr Mr Gordon (7) Robert B b 20 Mar 1785 marr Elberta E Heaton (this line in CA) (8) William (nothing known) (9) Ezekial (nothing known) (10) Thomas (nothing known) (11) Andrew (same) (12) another girl (nothing known) Alexander, Moses, Ezekial and Robert B went to Tenn by 1812 because Robert served in War of 1812. They then moved on to IL, Lawrence Co. James is my ancestor and he went to Miss. James had 11 children I know of and I have information on only about 5 so you can see I have a lot to learn. If anyone can help me, please do. Phyllis Turner Duce in OK

Can't seem to get back through my dad and grandfather, so I'll try this approach. My dad, Floyd E. TURNER (b 15 Jan 1887), son of John W. TURNER (b 29 Apr 1842) and Martha L. BALDRIDGE (b 8 Aug 1849), had a sister, Mettie J. TURNER (b 1869) and a brother, Everett H (b 1882). They were all tangled up in Washington, Jefferson, and Marion Co., IL. Also, on the back of an old picture of three lovely young sub-teen ladies, my mother had written the following names: Mae Anna TURNER, 23 Dec 1911 Goldie Burness TURNER, 6 Jul 1913 Eva Lorean TURNER, 17 Sep 1916 These girls are of the right age to have been from one of my dad's earlier marriages but I have no proof. So, anybody know who these girls are? Any descendants of Everett or Mettie? Other than my mother and dad, Uncle Everett is the only one I remember ever meeting. Bells, anyone? Floyd E.
