    1. [TURNER-L] Turners of Union & Franklin Parish LA
    2. Diane Trifilo
    3. Hello Turner researchers: I am new to this list. I am researching my maternal grandfathers family. My grandfather was Allen Winthrop Turner born in Marion, Union County, LA in 1889; His parents, according to his death certificate were: Isaac Floyd Turner and Martha Clarenda Day. Isaac Turner (my great grandfather) has no information on his death certificate as to who his parents were; nor does my grandmother, Martha Day. A researcher I met online, told me my great grandfather Isaac, may be Isaac Franklin Turner born to James Madison Turner and Jane Acree in Union County, LA around that time. Does anyone on this list know anything about this line? Please post or email me privately at dianet@briefcase.com Diane Trifilo (CT) _______________________________________________________ Get Visto! 1. [TURNER-L] One last Turney
    2. Harold Miller
    3. One more and then I will go back to lurking in the shadows, watching the Turner list. A Jacob Turney SR. who ended up in Boone County, Arkansas, his family was from Smith/DeKalb Co TN. All of his brothers were in the War of 1812, so we looked for his records. Could not find anything, but then we found where he applied for a pension. He was first rejected, he applied again, his records were finally found but he died just before that. Anyway, when we sent for his records, we knew the unit. Came back no such person. One of his dec. finally found the records, and they were filed under Jacob TURNER. One the outside of the records the name was written as TURNER. So even that late - ca 1815, mistakes were being made in the names. Mary Turney Miller hlm@qtm.net

    1. [TURNER-L] Maryland Turney
    2. Harold Miller
    3. Since when the Swiss Thuny family arrived, their records were often under Ternay, Tunni, etc, and Turner.....maybe some Turner researcher has come across my Turney I am looking for. I believe a John Thuny/Turney arrived in Maryland in 1740-1750. I have the Rev War pension on a Henry Turney I think was his son. Since the area I have to research in MD is full of Turner/Murphy, I am not always sure about the records I have to search. Rev War pension on Henry Turney say: born on January 1, 1753 in Nanjemoy, Charles Co., Maryland. His father moved the family to Buncombe County, NC where he was living when he enlisted in REv. War. In the fall of 1779 he moved to Davidson County, NC (present day Nashville, TN area). Around 1789 he moved to Smith Co., Tennessee where he married his second wife Nancy Jones in February 1831. He applied for his pension in 1833 and died February 4, 1836. His first wife was Martha Lancaster who he married Dec 13, 1788 in Davidson Co. He often in TN is shown as HY Turney. Now, my cousin lives in Maryland and last spring I sent her out to search for a Baptist church cemetery in Charles Co where I had been told Turney were buried - I am not sure she found the correct cemetery, but she found Turner all over the place. Someone did a look-up for me in Maryland Militia in Revolutionary War and found a William Turney listed as being a member of Captain Hezikiah Garner's Co in 1777, in Charles Co. I understand many from that unit belonged to Durham parish area. Everything I look at for 1740s- to about 1760 in that area of Maryland is Turner. Since the Turner/Turney name were mixed up at times in early records, have any of you Turner found something that might be my Turney? He was probably German speaking Swiss - would have arrived 1740-1750, I think the father was John, but John Thuny in Switzerland had 3 brothers. I have Tennessee info on this Henry Turney, but just cannot find him or his father in Maryland - and I need that to know if it is the same family as my Turneys. One of the PA branchs of my Turney is Dorney. Thanks for the help. Mary Turney Miller hlm@qtm.net

    1. [TURNER-L] Turner - Turney marriage
    2. Harold Miller
    3. The confusion over Turney and Turner goes deeper....there were two Turner/Turney marriages in TN in 1820s. The Turney females were daughters of George Turney born 1784, died at his home in Smith County, Tennessee 13 Oct 1821, married 01 August 1803 Hawkins Co., TN to Catherine Barger. Katherine Turney born 1806 married John Turner born 1803 Patrick Co., VA, died after 1847. Elizabeth Turney born 1805, married Francis L. Turner born 1805 Patrick Co., VA; died aft 1870 TN. They married about 1825 TN. John and Francis Turner were the sons of: James Turner born abt 1775 Albemerle Co Va, died abt 1825 Wilson Co., TN. Married 26 December 1796 in Patrick Co., VA to Ann Reeves d/o George Reeves and Mary Young. other children: Jerimiah Turner born 1799 VA married 15 February 1820 Wilson Co TN to Nancy Hancock Lucinda Turner married 21 May 1822 Wilson Co TN to George Phillips. Now a Jeremiah Reeves lives near the Turneys in Smith Co TN as do the Spurlocks. Some of the Turneys moved to Arkasas in 1830s as did Turner, Spurlock, Hancock, and Young families. 1. [TURNER-L] Turner/Tarner/Turney
    2. Harold Miller
    3. I am a Turney researcher who belongs to the Turner list for several reasons. The main one is....I think Turner is the English spelling of many European names. In early records - say 1740-176, I often can not tell if a land record belongs to a Turner or a Turney without some research. I have posted the following before, but will do so again. >From about 1750 to 1787 my Turney family lived just south of Woodstock, VA. He came to America in Oct 1741 on ship FRIENDSHIP, along with the Andes/Andis family and the Bahr/Barr/Baer. See how the German names were changed? Turney was Thuny from near Berne Switzerland. Before that the name is traced back to France and was Tournai, DeTurna, etc. We have found about 30 spellings of the name depending on the country and the time. In Ireland we have proof that a Tony when he joined the British army before Rev War - the name was changed to Turney. My Peter Turney had two brothers who also came to America, and possibly some cousins. His two brothers stayed in PA, with one of them being a Dorney. So Dorney family of PA, some of them are the same family as Turney. Here is an example of what I mean. Hampshire Co Va is near Shenandoah Co Va where my Turneys were located in 1780s. Hampshire Co VA lists the following land transaction for the name TERNAY. 9/3/1787 Michael TERNAY and wife Phoebe sell to James Murphy; (both of Hampshire Co.) 1/2 acre lot in town of Romney recorded 9/13/1787 Witnesses: Alex Ruthven, Rub. Holiday, Ralph Humphreys, John Murphy. By finding info on the Murphy family, I was able to prove that this TERNAY was Michael TURNER, and his wife was a Murphy. These Turner/Murphy came out of Maryland, and they moved to Kentucky ca 1787. So he was selling his land to make the move. SHENANDOAH COUNTY VIRGINIA Marriage Bonds 1772-1850 compiled by Bernice M. Ashby page 9 TURNER, Michl. --- Mathaney, Elender. Sept 19, 1785. Bondsman: Danl. Mathaney. well folks, this is my Michael TURNEY with his marriage record done under the Turner name. He lived as I said in Woodstock, VA. In 1787 the family sold their land and by 1789 they are on Kentucky tax list......living near where the Turner/Murphy people went. As you can see, early records have to be looked at carefully by researchers as Turner seems to be the catch-all spelling of many other family names. Mary Turney Miller hlm@qtm.net

    1. [TURNER-L] Mary Anniebelle Turner Cook TN>MS
    2. robby mccain
    3.   Does anyone have a Mary Annie Belle Turner, born 23 Oct. 1879 in Hardin County, TN.  She married James Alexander Cook (Jim) on  August 18, 1895. She died on June 30,  1912, and is buried in Pisgah Cemetary in Hardin County, TN.  Her husband remarried and when he died he was buried in Calhoun County, MS.  After her death, he married again to Annie Sowell and moved to Banner, Calhoun Co., MS. The children of Mary Turner Cook and Jim Cook were: 1. Herbert Cook 2. Baby Boy Cook 3. Elnara Cook 4. Mattie Ophelia Cook 5. Jimmie Martin Cook 6. Winfred Sutton Cook 7. Minnie Annie Belle Cook (died at 2 years old) 8. Baby Boy Cook 9. Baby Boy Cook (some of the above may be of the second wife, but I do know that #6 was from Mary Turner Cook) My grandmother has a LARGE portrait of her so they seem to have been either quite well off for the time or had a cheap photographer.  They were a farming family in both Tennessee and Mississippi.  I also know that my great grandfather, one of the children, was born in McNairy County, TN, so they might have moved there after marriage. She was part Indian, but I don't know for sure who her parents were. Two possible suspects are buried in the same cemetary as she and have birth and death dates that make them her possible parents. They are: Eriah S. (b. 1-11-1848  and d. 12-16-1932) Mercia J. (b. 2-12-1868  and d. 12-31-1930) These are the only Turners in the cemetary. Does anyone have info on the above family from Hardin County, TN.  I am at a brick wall and have been trying to prove Indian blood so that I can go for the American Indian College Fund, as I am a student.  If anyone can help or knows someone who can help please email me or post to the list.  Also if anyone has a census for this time period in Hardin County or a surrounding county (or county in Mississippi). Thanks so much Mr. Robby McCain Oxford, MS (but a Water Valley, MS  address) _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I looked through the surnames for TARNER and there is none in this volume. There is a supplement(to this volume index) I may send for that will give me more information on the TURNER surname. In this index there is a bunch of numbers listed for the surnames. ( ref, HO, 107/2233) Our surname TURNER has 5 number listings. I thank you very much & good luck on the TARNER surname. 1. [TURNER-L] TURNER/TARNER CONNECTION?
    2. I'm really new to this list and have seen oodles of information on Turners, but I'm a TARNER!! Am I doing something wrong? Am I on the wrong page? I was under the impression that this site had to do with Turners, Tanners, Toerners, Tarners, and all the other variations on the same theme. I LOVE what I see happening here with Turner information and want to find the same kind of thing for us Tarners. There aren't very many Tarners in this country, but our research so far has led us to be almost certain that all of us are related to each other in one way or another. We've all traced our respective Tarner lines back to a John Tarner (my paternal ggg grandfather) who was born about 1782 and owned property in Pennsylvania in the early 1800's, and died 6/Oct/1855 in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, PA. Family lore in our line has it that he was Pennsylvania Dutch (German) and that some of his children and grandchildren were Dunkards (River Bretheren, I think). If there are any Tarners out there who are interested in the information we have, we'd be happy to share, and, of course, would love any informaiton you could give us that would fill in some of the gaps in our larger Tarner family tree. Does anyone, anyone at all, know anything about any tangible connection between Turners and Tarners-- I mean, actual instances of families known as Tarner changing their name to Turner or vice versa? I've discovered that in Polish and Italian websites and some other european sites whose languages I don't recognize, the name Turner becomes Tarner when it passes from English into those languages, as, for instance, in news releases about Tina Turner and Ted Turner. When those two names turn up in those sites, they're always spelled 'Tarner' instead of 'Turner.' Why wouldn't the name stay the same? Does anyone have any idea what's going on there? Would love some help on this mystery. Thanks for listening. Sandra (Tarner) Wagner

    3. I am still on the trail of John Harbinger Turner, b. 1786 SC(?) Would appreciate any info on possible parents and siblings. He married Hettiah Rives and migrated to NW Georgia, then to Pope Co. Arkansas. I have a good list of his descendents and will be glad to share. Let me know if you think you are related to this bunch of Turners. There was another group (descendants of Terisha Turner) who also came from SC to the same area of Arkansas, but through Tennessee, and I haven't found a connection between the two clans. March 16, 1996, Jonesboro, GA. ________ A few GA census records are listed below and some Marlsboro SC minutes. It is not certain that the MOses Turner mentioned in the minutes was my Moses Turner. But the Quicks and Turners are connected, both families moved to Fayette County GA from SC, Drucilla, a daughter of Moses Turner and his Unknown wife, married Eli Quick in Fayette County, GA. Both were born in SC according to GA census records. The 1840 census of Fayette County, GA, reflects: Moses Turner, age 50-60, Wife, age 50-60, 2 sons, ages 15-20, 1 daughter age 10-15, one son age 5-10. NOTE: Moses' first wife is apparently the one listed above in the 50-60 age range. His second wife, widow Martha Moses, was listed as only 39 years old in the 1860 census 20 years later. 1850 Fayette Co., GA 29th District 10-9-1850 #1088 Turner, Moses 63 M SC Farming " Martha 38 F GA " Turner Moses 12 M GA " Jani (Jane?) 10 F GA " Francis M 5 M GA " Caroline J 3 F GA {Age 63 for Moses above places his year of birth abt 1887} 1860 Fayette Co., GA Fayetteville 1 June #5 Turner, Moses T 75 M SC Martha 39 F GA Moses, Sarah Jane 16 F GA (Martha's child from 1st marriage) " Francis M 14 (15?) In a will listing Henson Turner as Executor of the Estate, it is recorded that Moses T. C. Turner came from South Carolina with his family. No specific location in South Carolina was given. Fayette County Genealogy Book "1821- 1971" reflects some information on the Turners. The will of Moses T. Turner is recorded in Fayette County Probate Court, pages 359-360. The will was executed on May 6, 1865, probated February 7, 1867. The will names sons, Moses and Henson, son-in-law Eli Quick, and mentions other children, but does not name them. The executor was Henson Turner, Moses T. Turner's, son. On page 586 of the above referenced book the following information appears: Henson Turner, executor of the estate of Moses Turner, deeded on December 15, 1880 two (2) acres in Land Lot 11 of the 5th District to New Hope Methodist Episcopal Church and the deed states: "in consideration of his desire to promote the welfare of the Church and in the dissemination of religious truth, as well as in consider- ation of $10.00 is paid in hand....." ____________________ Drucilla, daughter of Moses T. C. Turner married Eli Quick, June 14, 1828, in Fayette County, GA. The Turners and Quicks came from SC according to GA census records. It is thought they came to GA from Marlsboro CO, SC. See the following items below found on p. 128, "Marlboro County, South Carolina Minutes of the County Court 1785-1799 and Minutes of the Court of Ordinary 1791-1821" by Brent Holcomb, Southern Historical Press (1981).
