    3. Searching for Isaac TURNER b 1788 Paris, FR d 1867 Wayne Co., PA. He served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., NY. Isaac m Nancy KELLEY in 1848 after he stopped at her farm in Wayne Co., PA and worked for her. They had 8 children: Mathilda who was a post mistress for NayAug, PA and never married John Milton m had 9 children incl. 2 sets of twins Franklyn Varney m Carolena Augusta MEYER Mary Angeline James Buchanan Rosilla Correll m 1- LOCKARD 2- HAUSER Elma Martha m 1- DENISON 2- BIRD Elmer Marcus (last 2 were twins). Family lore says Isaac 'came from the West' when he stopped at Nancy's farm and that he had been married twice before. Nothing is know of these marriages but he had children from them. In the 1850 Wayne Co., PA census a John TURNER is shown living next door to Isaac/Nancy. His children were: Maria, George and Milton - twins; Victoria and Virginia, and Henry. Since the name MILTON shows up in the children with Nancy plus twins in each family (this also carried into the next generation), I feel this John was an earlier son of Isaac. Is anyone out there missing an ISAAC TURNER???? Hope to hear from some of you out there!!!!!

    3. Hello Turner Researchers: I have written to this list before, but have not gotten any responses. I'd like to try a different route. This time, I would like to start with Garrison TURNER b. December 25, 1838 in Fort Wayne, Benton, IN (possibly Indianapolis); d. August 29, 1916 in Modesto, Stanislaus, CA married. Sept. 2, 1859 in Corvallis, Benton Co., OR. Elizabeth Jane STARR b. September 24, 1841 in Walnut Grove, IA; d. November 27, 1921 possibly in Modesto, CA So far that I have found, their children are: 1. Ellen Grace Turner b. July 22, 1860 d. July 13, 1862 2. Henry Garrison Turner b. May 1, 1862 + md. (1) Inez May Rice(d. Sept. 1887) (2) Emma Catherine Rice 3. Leander Theodore Turner b. Feb. 1, 1864 + md. Elsie Mariam Sheldon 4. Florence Starr Turner b. Nov. 16, 1880 + md. Lewis Lincoln Dennett 8. Elvena Muriel Turner b. June 14, 1887 + md. Leroy M. Morris One other source names another son Keziah Turner b. abt 1877 and doesn't mention Ellen Grace Turner. June 28, 1860 Garrison and Elizabeth were living in Butte Precinct, Benton Co., OR, according to the Federal Census. By 1870 they were living in Empire Twp. and San Joaquin Twp., Stanislaus County, CA. Can anyone add to my data or perhaps you are connected... Any info would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hello everyone. I'm new to the list, and thought I'd post my interests. I'm looking for Turners in Maltby, Yorkshire. Thomas Turner and Hannah Wood married there in 1776, and their children were all born there. Their son Thomas also married there, to Catherine Brown(e), and had his two children, William and Francis William. William emigrated to Australia in the 1840 (according to legend), and married Margaret Killean. They had ten children. After Margaret passed away, William remarried, this time to Harlettie Louisa Smith (nee Groombridge). William and Harlettie had three children, Sydney (my great grandfather), Claribell and Myrtle. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries, or take a look at my website at www.i-o.net.au/members/mbt Thanks!! 3. Sandra, You can't put much reliance on spelling to distinguish name like Tarner and Turner. Before the 20th Century, people (especially census takers and other minor government officials) spelled names the way they sounded. Illiteracy was common and people could not even spell their own names. The Bureau of the Census developed the Soundex Code back in the 1920s to solve this problelm. In the Soundex spelling of a name, the vowels and the weak consonants (h, w,y) are ignored and the consonants are reduced to six values: 1: b,f,p,v 2: c,g,,j,k,s,x,z 3: d,t 4: l 5: m,n 6: r Therefore, both Turner and Tarner will be reduced to the same value: T656. I think that Tarner is merely a spelling variation of Turner. That difference may be important to you, but it was probably not important to all the different people who created the primary records over the last 200 years. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mamawagz1@aol.com> To: <philip.turner@worldnet.att.net> Sent: Thursday, July 29, 1999 12:01 AM Subject: Re: [TURNER-L] Genealogical Socitey of Pennsylvania > Dear Phil, > > I'm not a Turner, but a Tarner and am making little headway finding anything > about Tarners because there are so few of us-- a mere fraction of the number > of Turners on this planet. I think that this is causing blockage of messges from other Microsoft software users. (I use MS Outlook Express for email and, believe me, my replys aren't very long.) 3. Hi folks, I made a trip to the GSP in Philadelphia yesterday. Here are some of my findings. First, the GSP has moved to a new address, as of four years ago. They are now right across the street at: 1305 Locust St.; Philadelphia, PA 19170. Previously, they had had their offices in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) which is at 1300 Locust St. For some reason, they had to leave some of their materials behind, including the Rev. C.H.B. Turner collection. Furthermore, the HSP is closed for renovation and they will not reopen until August 17. So, there will be no opportunity to examine the Rev. C.H.B. Turner collection until then. Rev. C.H.B. (Charles Henry Black) Turner was the rector of the St. Peters Parish in Lewes, Delaware between 1900 and 1917. He was also a member of the GSP and collected Bible and other records of genealogical interest from Sussex and Kent Counties in Delaware, and form Somerset and Worcester Counties, Maryland. Apparently, the GSP published several monographs filled with his collected information. This must be where Pauline Turner Fake must have gotten her information on the family of William and Mary (McLemore) Turner. By the way, Rev. C.H.B. Turner was not descended from this family. I made a copy of his application for membership in the GSP and he gave as his oldest known ancestor a Daniel de Tourneur, born in Amiens, France in 1626. I plan to go back in August after the HSP reopens and see if I can find out about the descendants of William and Mary (McLemore) Turner. Stay tuned for the next exciting adventure! 1. [TURNER-L] TURNER, Bessie L. (Tribue) TN > KY > TX
    2. Hi Fellow Researchers - Searching for any information on my paternal grandmother Bessie Lee TURNER's ancestors, and exactly where in Tennessee she was born, if indeed she was actually born there. Bessie Lee TURNER b. 13-Oct-1864 Tennessee d. 23-Nov-1941 Abilene, TX A very helpful fellow researcher found marriage records in Sumner Co., TN, showing that she and my grandfather, Thomas A. Price, were married on 20-Sep-1883. Thomas' census listing shows my grandmother, Bessie, to have been born in Tennessee, and her tombstone confirmed the vital dates. Her death certificate did not show the first name of either of her parents, only that her mother's very unusual maiden name was TRIBUE. Her obituary gave no other information not already known, except that a sister, Mrs. Jim Young of Rockfield, KY, was listed as a survivor. As yet, have had no results in finding any J., Jim or James Young in Warren Co., KY, who fits that description. The same fellow researcher who found her marriage records reported that her middle name was listed as Lee. Several middle initials have been used in various records. The 1900 census records have her middle initial as E, and her cemetery records show it as J., but her tombstone shows it as T, which is probably for Turner. I have Thomas' information back to the 1500s, in Wales, but can't get over that well known brick wall on finding any useful information about Bessie, her parents or siblings. Does anybody have any information on Bessie Turner's mother's first name, anything about her father, or her birthplace, or verification of any the above info? As always, will happy to share anything I have. John

    2. Just wanted to let the group know that I am probably one of the main sources for information on this particular TURNER line. William Godwin TURNER was born William GODWIN in Derbyshire, England in 1789, eventually came to America, added the name TURNER, moved to SE Ohio, married and had a large family. This TURNER line is not connected to any of the other TURNER lines at all. I am now trying to trace his parents (I do have a clue) and have some info on when/why he left to come to America. Sue
