Hello, I hope some of you out there on the Turner list may be able to help me. I'm searching for any information on my Great Great Grandfather's family. His name was James R. Turner, born April 4, 1836, and we have reason to think it was in Patrick County, Virginia. He married Sarah Jane Wood, daughter of Josiah Wood and Deliah Boyd. After the Civil War both families moved to southwestern Virginia. James served in the 51st Infantry. I'd appreciate any information that might lead me to finding his parents. Thanks, Wilma Carroll http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4987

I am thrilled to have become acquainted with my granddaughter's family. And what a sweet family! Now I can put all this great information in her book and she will be thrilled when she is old enough to read it. This has been the most wonderful thing that has happened to me...since her birth. I worry all the time about being able to give the kids and grandkids their ancestry, I think it is a basic right to know where you come from. Thanks so much to this list for all the responses, they were great, and something wonderful has come of them. Happy grammy in CA. Dorothy, I read your comments about James Turner with interest. As I looked for Jesse Turner, I found him and many of the names were the same. I also suspect they had the same path from VA to NC. Do you know who all his siblings were? Who his parents were? They both had daugthers named Winaford. Jesse names his first twin sons James and John. Thanks. Deana

It occurs to me that it has been a long time since I have posted my Turner information to this list. The wonderfully successful match that Rose Adams and I made yesterday reminds me that it may be time to post this information again. Rather than make this an impossibly long message I am going to post each generation in a separate message. Generation 1 William Turner William's parentage continues to elude us. It is 99% certain that he is not the William Turner son of Terisha Turner and Sarah Wimpey that is listed in the DAR records. (Terisha and Sarah Wimpey Turner are my husband's direct ancestors) William was born speculatively between 1738-1750. It is possible he had a brother, Zachariah, who died during the Rev. War while serving on the ship "Phantom" The first we pick him up with certainty is in 1790 in Franklin Co, GA on the tax list. There is a William Turner in Granville Co, NC as early as 1778 or earlier that appears to be the correct person and living in the area of collateral lines. It is possible that he, at one time lived in the northern part of Laurens Co, SC before moving to Franklin Co, GA William was described as "of Roane Co, TN" in a land deed in Franklin Co, GA on 2 Feb 1809, directing his son Nathan to sell his land. His death place and date are unknown to us, although family legend states that he died in Roane Co, TN cir 1828. William Turner married Sarah "Sally" Denney, daughter of Zachariah and Mary Denney. Her birth and death info are also unclear. Children: 1. Elizabeth "Betsey"; b. cir 1782; m. Abner Casey, thought to be the son of Aaron Casey; children: Turner Franklin Casey, Jesse Casey, perhaps others 2. Polly; m. Ruben Kelly 3. Pricilla "Rissie"; m. Denny Harris; living in Granville Co, NC as a widow in 1810 4. Sarah "Sally"; b. cir 1794; m. John Acord 1819 Roane Co, TN; children: Calvin, Cornelius C., William G., John Columbus, Francis Marion 5. Susan; b. cir 1782 (census records state she was born in SC); m. James Casey 6. Nathan; b. 21 Feb 1780; d. 1 Mar 1840 Roane Co, TN; m. Elizabeth Hicks; 7. Zachariah; b. cir 1765; m. Mary Casey 1783; probably the Zachariah living in Bedford Co, TN that had 13 children 8. Anna; b. cir 1786 probably SC; m. John Casey cir 1802 probably Franklin Co, GA; living in Polk Co, MO as a widow in 1870; children: Jane, Levi; Hettie; Keziah; John Allen, Elizabeth Ann, Frances Mariah, Mary Ann, Clarissa B., Susanne E., Sarah. 9. Daniel; b. cir 1789 probably SC; m. Elizabeth "Betsey" Hill 1811 Roane Co, TN; living in Washington Co, MO on 1850 census Any connections on this family would be joyfully received!! Glad that someone on the Turner list has been instrumental in a reunion of some Turners. Wish I could get some help. A marriage is what divided my Turner relatives. My grandmother Lena Turner married an Irish Catholic immigrant and for that her parents disowned her. Lena was born in 1871 in Kentucky. On Lena's death certificate her mother is listed as Turnettie Pemberton and her father as George Turner. Guess they were born around 1850. I have searched the Immigrant list for Turners and the list goes on forever. I remember my grandmother used to visit her brother in Joplin, Missouri in the 1930s and 40s. I believe his name was Lance Turner and that she also had twin sisters who lived in Arkansas and their names were Ada and Ida. Does any of those names ring a bell with anyone? George Turner +Turnettie Pemberton 1. Lena Turner b. 1871 KY +John Walter Moran b. 1864 Ireland Lena Moran b. 1900 AR +John Wiley Evans b. 1898 AR 2. Lance Turner (Lived in Joplin, MO) 3. Ada Turner (Lived in AR) 4. Ida Turner (Lived in AR) Thanks, Rose
Hi, Steve: Many thanks for your Turner abstracts. A Jim Tanner in Peoria, IL gave me info a year ago on two of my ancestors; I'd like to share the info here. JAMES TURNER, Senator, b. 20 Dec 1766, Southampton Co., VA, d. Bloomsbury, Warren Co., NC 15 Jan 1824. He early removed with his parents to Bute (now warren) Co., NC, and there received such education as the common schools of that district afforded. During the Revolutionary War, he served with Nathaniel Bacon in a company of NC volunteers commanded by Col. John Macon. His public career began by his election to the legislature in 1798, with re-election in 1799 and 1800, and was continued by his service in the upper house in 1801-02. He was then chosen governor of NC, which place he held until 1805. Gov. Turner was then elected as a Democrat to the US senate, and served from 4 March 1805, until 1816, when he retired on account of failing health. (See Turner, Daniel, his son) TURNER, DANIEL, soldier, b. Warren Co., NC 21 Sept 1796, d. Mare Island, Solano Co., CA 21 July 1860. Daniel married Anna Key, daughter of Francis Scott Key, author of the National Anthem. He was graduated at the US military accademy in 1814, (West Point?) and entered the army as 2nd Lt. in the corps of artillery. He served during the second war with England as acting assistant engineer in erecting temporary defences for NY City, after which he was ordered to Platsburg. On the reduction of the army, he resigned on 17 May 1815, and then spent two years at William and Mary College. He was elected to the lower branch of the NC legislature, serving from 1819 until 1823. Mr. Turner was elected to Congress, and served from 3 Dec 1827 until 3 Mar 1829, after which, in 1847-54, he was principal of the Warrenton, NC female seminary. His last office was that of superintending engineer of the construction of the public works at Mare Island navy yard, San Francisco harbor, which he held from the establishment of the navy yard in 1854 until the time of his death. Note: Daniel and Anna had 11 children. Both Daniel and Anna, and several of their children, and other family members are buried on Mare Island which was the largest US Naval Shipyard on the West Coast until a few years ago when it was dismantled/decommissioned. Daniel was a Civil Engineer who came west with Admiral Farragut to establish Mare Island. I was told James Turner was the brother of my 3rd great g'father, Henry H. Turner, making Daniel his nephew. I'm still trying to put this together! I am also very family with Mare Island. Dorothy Turner Gray
To Rose Adams I can't help you with family, but I looked up Turners, Missouri in a 1942 atlas. It was a town marked on the map about nine miles ESE of Springfield on a highway to Rogersville. The highway is no longer marked on modern maps. Turners had a population of 26 in 1942.
Hello: I am new to this list and am researching the name of Turner in a "populated place" near Springfield, MO., called Turners. It must not be a town as it is not listed in any of my atlas' . There are a lot of Turner's there, and I am looking for a family father Michael. He is alive, he has a sister Leanne. There are about 6 kids in the family. I am looking for his parents, hoping they are alive too. I am the grandmother of their great grandchild. Because of a divorce they are not aware of the birth of this child. I am a genealogist and really would love to have the ancestry of this family for my granddaughter. I am sure they would like to know about her, if the shoe were on the other foot, I would surely like to be told. Can anyone on this list help with this? Rose Adams in CA. The baby's father is Jeremy Turner. Rose Adams in CA.
Just to update the list on the query made earlier by Rose Adams about Turner's from Turner's, MO... Rose was looking for the parents and grandparents of the father of her granddaughter. The granddaughter's father is my first cousin's son. As soon as I read the message I called my aunt and uncle and told them of this message. They were completely surprised and absolutely delighted to hear that they have their first great grandchild. I have spoken to Rose on the phone and have arranged for a phone conversation between the two families later this evening. Thank you to this wonderful list for bringing about the reuniting of a family that was separated by divorce many years ago. We have a brand new Turner cousin and grandparents have found a long lost grandson. What a happy ending! Audrae Turner Mathis
