    3. Hi All I said I'd put the cat amongst the pigeons. So far have had 25 replies 5 in favour 4 of whom I think are UK based 20 against 4 from Oz, 8 from USA, 5 with AOL address, 2 Juno address and 1 iflint.com address. So I admit defeat, but some very good suggestions came out of this. I think most on the list also received them. I'm current on 7 list and I received 497 postings this morning, most of it is filtered but I find that it doesn't always work. One name I'm searching is ARMER but every posting that has the word "farmer" in it ends up in my ARMER box. My problem not yours Thanks for all the replies. You may be interested to know that I put the same on the Wilson list and got 5 replies, obviously not a passionate as the TURNERS. Michael

    3. I am not advocating " a lot of different lists" - just two. One for the U.S.A. which is currently responsible for virtually all of the postings (an then for enquiries relating solely to persons born in the U.S.) and which are of no interest to me, and another for the rest of the world. Those in the U.S. who wish to go back beyond their earlies U.S. ancestor would have to subscribe to two lists, but surely that is not a great burden, especially given the scarce number of non U.S. postings. A separate list mike actually get TURNER people from outside the U.S. to subscribe and take more interest. I subscribe to three U.K. lists dealing with Yorkshire and one dealing with Essex and do not find that a great burden, especially as I know theat postings on that list will be of interest to me. In about three months or more of subscribing to the TURNER list I have only encountered les than a handful of postings which were not dealing solely with the USA. I notice that the protests against two lists are almost all coming from the U.S. How many of those are researching outside the U.S. and, if they are, would they really find it a burden to subscribe to a second list which would result in very few postings at present, but which might tncourage others to join and thus increase their chances of getting valuable information? Another point is also that it would make searching the archives for new members much easier. Given that there are a number of place names common to both the U.S. and U.K. For example, when I search "Ripon" I get lots of old postings, but all relating to Ripon in the States and not in the U.K. The same appies to Essex and Middlesex. 3. I have very little information on this side of my tree. I do know that my great grandfather was Alfred John Hubert Turner and this name was passed down for about 6 generations to the oldest son. I beleive he is the end of the chain. He married Mary Jane Congdon on June 5 1901. He was born on Sept 17 1875 in Erindale Ontario. Where Erindale is I do not know. I do know he has brothers and sisters. I would love for any pieces of information at all possible. Thanks in advance Janet Loyer.

    1. [TURNER] William TURNER, Yorkshire, England - Victoria, Australia
    2. Carol Turner
    3. Reposting my interests in the hope that the needle I'm looking for has joined this particular haystack. Thomas Turner m. Hannah Wood | Thomas Turner m. Catherine Brown | William Turner m. Margaret Jane Killean m. Harlettie Louisa Groombridge | Sydney Groombridge Turner m. Martha Lydia Paterson | Douglas Ernest Turner m. Jessie Rose Hanniver | Graeme Sydney Turner m. Jeannette Frances Wilton William Turner was christened in Maltby, Yorkshire, in 1813. He may have been any age from newborn to 5 years old, but that's beside the point at this stage. His parents were Thomas TURNER and Catherine. Although Catherine is listed as BROWN on both marriage record (1810) and christening record, William was to record her name later as Catherine ELLIS. This could be just to drive me insane, as William and co. seemed to have the gift of foresight, and took great pleasure in making my life miserable. I digress. William's father, Thomas, was himself the son of a Thomas TURNER, and of Hannah WOOD. They married in Maltby in 1776, and had a few children, but at the time of the 1881 census, Francis TURNER (William's brother) and his wife Mary were the only TURNERs listed for the town. Thomas Sr., Thomas Jr., William and Francis were all tailors. William joined the army. His commission took him to Australia. I will now quote Muriel McGivern from her book "A History of Croydon" volume 2: While this locality still remained forested hills and intermittent lagoons with wildlife abounding and natives hunting, the first permanent white man came -- William Turner, pastoralist. Recorded in the first volume of this book as one of the initial Europeans to gaze upon the region, substantiation of his residence at Croydon was not found, but since that publication descendants of his from far afield who know his history have come forward to tell of him. Arriving at Port Phillip in 1837, he pastured stock with Goliath Chatterton q.v. ("as much as you wish"), recorded in Billis and Kenyon's Pastoral Pioneers of Port Philip. Turner family records state that the grazing lands of Turner's first run extended to and about the Dandenongs including Croydon to Fern Tree Gully. William TURNER had had a colourful career. Born in Yorkshire in 1808, he came of an early Quaker family. He was a captain in the English army and his commission took him to Sydney; in 1837, one year after Captain Lonsdale arrived at Port Phillip to take charge of Batman's unauthorised settlement, William TURNER came to Melbourne by sailing ship as an officer in the army of occupation... TURNER soon after gave up his commission, the cause unknown; but he had taken strong exception to the public flogging of convicted persons in the streets of Melbourne for trifling offences such as stealing a loaf of bread... Croydon can still be proud that her founder was a humanitarian. There are one or two things that I wouldn't strongly agree with in this book, the first being that the family were Quakers, especially since they were apparently Anglicans, and the fact that William joined the army seems to negate this. Another rather startling omission is that of William's second wife, Harlettie Lousia Groombridge, and their three children, but no other member of the family was aware of this second branch until I located them and told them!! But once again, I'm getting ahead of myself William TURNER married Margaret Jane KILLEAN of Kilkenny, Ireland (born 1825), and had ten children: William, Janet, Thomas, Joshua, Louisa, Rose, Hector, Catherine, Annie and May. Joshua was the first known child of European descent born at The Basin in 1849. Annie was one year shy of being the first white child born in Croydon. Now we get to the part of the story left out of "A History of Croydon" In December 1882, Margaret TURNER (nee KILLEAN) died. In June 1883, William remarried. He was about 70 years old, his new wife was 38. Their son, Sydney Groombridge TURNER was born in July, 1883, making for one of the shortest pregnancies in history. Miraculously, their baby survived being born 8 months prem (yeah, right), and the marriage endured for ten years, until William's death. In that time, they had two more children - Claribell (who died at the age of 3) and Myrtle. William's new wife had been a busy lady... born in Tasmania in 1848, she married William WILLIAMS at the age of 16. They had one child, a son who was not named on the birth certificate, and then she was widowed. Her second husband was a man named William Henry SMITH. They were married two years after her first marriage, and had somewhere between 5 and 9 children. Following his death, she moved to Victoria, and married our William TURNER. Her name? Born Arlette, she changed the spelling of her name and became Harlettie Louisa GROOMBRIDGE WILLIAMS SMITH TURNER HAWARD ROTHERY. There is a rumor that she married a Capt. COLLISTER in Canada, but I've been unable to confirm that as yet. Besides, 5 husbands is enough for any woman, if you ask me. Sydney Groombridge TURNER was my great grandfather. He married Martha Lydia PATERSON (daughter of Eleanor DUNWOODIE and Robert PATERSON of Seymour, Victoria), and they had 9 children. My Grandfather, Douglas Ernest TURNER is their only son still living, and there are three daughters also still living. Myrtle Elsie Adelaide TURNER married Francis RUSH in Tasmania and had 3 children. 3. Don't understand how a list could be turned into only States. With all the migration, seems very few people stayed in one state. Would there then have to be a list for Turner's who weren't originally Turner's?? Here's my dilemma: Searching for Isaac TURNER b 1788 Paris, FR d 1867 Wayne Co., PA. Have no idea of his parentage or siblings. He served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., NY. Isaac m Nancy KELLEY in 1848 after he stopped at her farm in Wayne Co., PA and worked for her. (Nancy was previously married to ? VAN GELDER) They had 8 children: Mathilda b 1849 John Milton Franklyn Varney m Carolena Augusta MEYER Mary Angeline James Buchanan Rosilla Correll m 1- LOCKARD 2- HAUSER Elma Martha m 1- DENISON 2- BIRD Elmer Marcus (last 2 were twins) b 1864 Family lore says Isaac 'came from the West' when he stopped at Nancy's farm and that he had been married twice before. Nothing is know of these marriages but he had children from them. In the 1850 Wayne Co., PA census a John TURNER is shown living next door to Isaac/Nancy. His children were: Maria, George and Milton - twins; Victoria and Virginia, and Henry. Since the name MILTON shows up in the children with Nancy plus twins in each family (this also carried into the next generation), I feel this John was an earlier son of Isaac. 1. [TURNER] Eziekel Turner - VA
    2. It has been a while since I posted.... Ezekiel Turner, Edmonia Turner -- Rockbridge County - WV -- Edmonia was the mother of James Alexander Turner who married Mary T. Sinnett. James was born in 1829. He was raised by his mother and step-father william Jackson Chittum. Edmonia, James and Mary are buried in Madisionville Cemetery in Ralls County MO. I have tried to figure out if Ezekiel is James father or grandfather.... Edmonia (Edmonica) was born in 1808 in VA. I am on many different lists. I feel from the conversations going on that some of the posts don't get distributed to all on the people subscribing. My main concern is that dates and places are often omitted. To find a match... we need some key dates and places. And some of these ancestors moved around so much.... that it is very difficult to keep up with them... and here in todays age, people move on the average of once every two to five years...

    3. Hi All Looking for TURNER, DAY, THOMPSON & MCMURCHY" IN Ohio or KY I apologize in advance for the length of this but I wanted to get everything in. I am looking for information on the following TURNERs from Clark and Clermont Counties, Ohio, in the mid to late 1800s. Ezekiel Edwin TURNER was born Dec 17, 1817. According to Census records, he was in Clark Co. Ohio in 1860 and in Tate Township, Clermont Co. Ohio in 1850,1870 & 1880. His birthplace listed in the various Censuses as PA , KY and Ohio. The 1880 Census also lists his parents birthplace as PA. Ezekiel died June 2, 1889. He is buried in and his will was probated in Clermont Co. On January 19, 1845, Ezekiel married Charlotte W. THOMPSON who reportedly has roots back to the Mayflower. Charlotte was born Sept 9, 1816. Birth state for her is shown as both Ohio and PA. She died in Clermont Co in 1873. They had four daughters, Mary (died unmarried at age 16), Melissa Jane, Lucy Ann and Laura Elizabeth. They are all shown as being born in Ohio. Lucy is my great-grandmother. Ezekiel took a new wife, Keziah ? after Charlotte died. JONES 1877 - ................... 3 Edna Erett DAY 1883 - ................... 3 Loren Wellington DAY 1885 - After a visit to Clermont County last year, I have found that other TURNERs lived adjacent to Ezekiel in Tate Twsp. in the 1850 Census. The other TURNERs are Adam age 67 and Jane age 58. They have a son (?) William B. age 26 living with them. Next to Adam are Joseph and Naomi TURNER ages 28 and 27 with children Samantly (sp?) female age 2 and Wm. B. age 10 mo. In 1860 Clermont Co. Census, Joseph age 40 is living with wife Naomi age 37 and children (?) Wm. B age 11, AnaBelle age 9, Sarah Jane age 7 and Mariah M. (sp?) a male age 5. Naomi died in 1868. In 1870, Joseph is still in Tate Twsp. living with William age 20, Anabell age 18, Sarah J. age 17, Merit (sp?) age 16, Adam age 9 and Elizabeth age 8. I could not locate Adam or Jane TURNER after the 1850 Census including in the death, cemetery or probate records. I understand that death records for the period around the early 1850s are incomplete so that might me one explanation. I am speculating that Adam and Jane might be Ezekiel's parents. I did follow Adam back to 1840 in the same vicinity (based upon similar names of other family from the 1850 Census). In 1830, he was found in Lewis Twsp. in Brown Co. Since there are no family member's name in the early Census, a connection to Ezekiel was not possible. Adam, Jane and Joseph TURNER were shown as being born in PA as was Ezekiel for the 1850 Census. I ran out of time before I could research further. Is anyone familiar with any of these names? OR, does anyone have access to Land Records that might show who Ezekiel got his land from? Possibly his Father, Adam?? Thanks in advance. Walter Wood Apopka, Florida wwood@cfl.rr.com http://home.cfl.rr.com/wwood/
