My grandmother was a midwife and delivered my Gramma's kids. She put the first names that SHE wanted instead of what gramma wanted. When looking for the birth certificates most of the boys had the wrong names on it. Someone tried to tell me that my uncle didn't know who his grandparents were! Can you imagine! He was there and knew them he should know. The documentation on their names was wrong. Nothing is for sure. Census records are often wrong. The 1930 census is way off on my grandparents. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harold" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 2:23 AM Subject: [TURNER] DOCUMENTATION > Some people don't have the money > resorces etc to go to archives and > get copies of Documents: > > All some people have is word of mouth. > which is true if truer than a document: > The words on a document came from > someone's mouth befor it was written in > a document: When a child is born, the > parent(s) tell a nurce what the child's name > is to be, she writes it down on a pad, it > is transcribed by someone else in the > hospital, the hospital sends it to the State, > Someone at the State transcribes it to > a birth Cert................ an people take > that over the word of the Parent. > > I can not document that I was horn; > how am I suppose to document someone > born over 200 years ago? My TURNER line is one of my major brick walls. My father's parents never married, and I am looking for any information on my grandfather Robert Lee TURNER born in northern Alabama between approx. 1890 and 1900 and his family line. He was thought to be around 10 years older than my grandmother, Nancy Cornelia PAYNE who was born in 1903. From information passed down from the family he was born to a Robert S. TURNER, who had a brother named Oliver. This brother named Oliver, had a son that he named Oliver also, and he and my grandfather being first cousins, were about the same age. I have found this information that appears to be on my TURNER family line in the online 1880 census: Household Record 1880 United States Census Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace W. I understand from talk in the family that possibly there was a third Oliver TURNER in the Oliver TURNER line that is around my Dad's age in his 70's...but have not been able to find him or make contact. Robert Lee TURNER was also supposed to have a sister that married a man named Howard JOHNSON...but just try researching THAT one! LOL Robert Lee TURNER also was thought to have fathered another child, and he and this woman never married either. The child's name was Kenneth HARRIS, as he was not given his father's last name, but his mother's name is unknown. He was born in 1932 and was said to have been killed in the Korean War, though I have not been able to find record of him either. Last know whereabouts of Robert Lee TURNER, was he was thought to have left Alabama in the mid 30's and moved to central Florida. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I would love to be able to find out more information for my father regarding his family, and help fill in some branches on our family tree. This is how it seems to run: W M Turner born circa 1827 in Tennessee Robert S Turner born circa 1868 in Alabama Robert Lee Turner born circa 1890-1900 Ivy Lee Turner born 1932 in Alabama Anna Turner Ely I enjoy reading all the posts to this group, although I've never seen anything yet that seems to match up with my Turners! Most of the information you find on Ancestry is also on their supported web site www.Rootsweb.com. Rootsweb also supports a lot of cities and counties geneology. It's quite helpful, especially when looking for information on say Old Pickens County, Ga. Another link is Cyndislist.com. This site is really helpful.

Hi Joanne, Excuse me for butting in. There is another branch of TURNERS that seam to be in the same area as the ones you listed below. John TURNER b. 1687 and d. 1759 in Guillford, New Haven, CT., USA. m. Hannah Penfield 1710. She was b. 1687 and d. 1778 in Guillford, CT., USA. I am not sure that the above information is correct, but if so, he was my 8 great grand father. He appears to be the first of this line to be born in the colonies. After many decades, this branch moved gradually north to vermont and then in Lower Canada (Quebec). Artemus Turner b. 1775 in Whatley, MA., USA. He d. 1860 in Dunham, Quebec. He m. Elizabeth Dunham. I have been able to .... starting from John TURNER above to the present .... and with a lot of help .... piece together 11 generations. In your search, have you come across any of this family, and more specifically ... who John TURNER's parents were in England. My hope is that John was not an only child and my have siblings that would provide some help. I am very willing to share the data I have, but I can only vouch for the information from 1798 to the present. Thanks for listening. I am not talking about databases, I am referring to queries that were written on free sites and those queries are now at Ancestry.com. I am unable to correct mistakes and my name is not on it so that someone can take the advantage to contact me. Also, they have taken something from a free site, placed it on their paid to view site. That is what I think is wrong. Also, many of us cannot afford the fees to view Ancestry.com. I am intitled to an opinion based on experience whether everyone agrees with it or not. Enough said. Have a happy day!
Obviously most of us do not "purchase" vital records due to cost and availability for everything in our databases, but what we should do is cite the sources where we received our various pieces of information --be it a birth certificate, a page from a genealogy book, a newspaper obituary, etc., even word of mouth from a relative who remembers particular bits of information. Most of us have access to public libraries, LDS family history centers, and sometimes historical societies and other places where one can procure facts from written materials for very little money. Although genealogy can become very expensive, one is not limited to vital records that one purchases or some clues pick up in an online database for which you have no idea of the source. There are many sources of information (and obviously not all are 100% correct). The LDS church microfilmed many public records that can be rented inexpensively. Public libraries may have vital records information on microfilm such as the Barbour Collection of CT Vital records, vital records from Vermont, Selected Rev. War pension files, many US census microfilms, etc. The point is not to get hung up on a vital record for information one already know to be true. If you do not have your birth certificate, that is ok unless you are joining a lineage society. If that is the case, one must procure the vital records necessary if they want to join the organization that requires them. If you have to use an incorrect vital record -- yes they are not all correct -- then you can explain the errors. Mistakes abound everywhere -- it is not always easy to be correct -- but in general primary source documents made at the time of the event are likely to be more correct than unsourced information one finds online. Written/official documents such as death certificates, marriage certificates are not always accurate. I cite my grandmother as an example. I knew her quite well and although I never addressed her by her given name I knew what it was. The records though show many variations of her given name. Her given name was Mary Rosa but I have found documents showing Mary Rose, Rosemary as well as the correct name. Enjoy your search for your ancestors. I deem it a fun thing to do and not arms and legs. I'm not going to court with any of my information.

One DOES NOT HAVE TO PAY to use the shared databases on Ancestry/WorldConnect. Go to www.rootsweb.com and scroll down to where you access World Connect. I don't know why people keep perpetuating the myth that the freely shared information is no longer free. One can easily remove their own database with the incorrect information and replace it with a new one. The BEST way to correct mistakes you may be unable to remove from other online sources is to post again with the correct information. That way, people searching will find both the correct and incorrect and can ponder the differences and write for clarification. If one posts to message boards, these are archived, and it only makes good sense to post only what they believe good information. Pure speculation might be left to private email, but we all make mistakes. That is why any of us should verify what we take from these online message boards and databases -- also books, and other material as well. I am a seasoned researcher and I find Ancestry very valuable -- both the "for pay" standard print resources and the large free WorldConnect/Ancestry databases. I cannot tell you the number of clues I have received from that large collective database. I also have made contact with people researching common lines. The point is to use any large shared database for clues, not the gospel truth. You may be surprised at the gems among the garbage. Margaret Scheffler ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> > About these untrue facts concerning family on the web. Hi, I want to comment about birth certificates. I cannot speak for every nurse, but as a labor and delivery nurse who has delivered 1000's of babies, I can tell you what we have always done here in Texas. I am sure other hospitals throughout the USA do it this way, too. There is a worksheet asking for information which the NURSE does give to the new parents. They fill out the forms themselves. In many hospitals, a day or so later, a hospital representative from Medical Records comes and reviews the information with the parents to make sure everything on the form is correct. The form then goes to Medical Records where it is typed out and sent to the proper city/county office. At no time have I ever seen NURSES fill out the forms themselves. If a nurse DID fill it out, I would think that s/he would first ask the parents how they wanted to spell the names before writing them down. You would be surprised how many people don't even have a clue how the names they give their children are spelled! I do realize that the way things were done in hospitals many, many years ago were different than they have been in more recent times. I just had to speak up on behalf of my L&D/nursery compadres! :) Susan Looking for TURNERs in Centre County, Pennsylvania (direct descendent of John Turner, patriot of the American Revolution)
I believe the point is many areas of Ancestry are FREE......especially the family trees that you submit and message boards...the subscription only covers the databases. Susan A. I am searching for the parents of William Toliver Turner. He was born in VA. He died in Fauquier Co. in about March 1865. He married Martha Jane White in Warren Co. They lived in Fauquier Co., next door to Mrs. Eliza Letitia Steptoe (Clarkson) Marshall. Some of William's children, including my great-grandmother, were born in Mrs. Marshall's house. My research shows that Mrs. Marshall's grandmother was Dorcas Turner who migrated to Fauq. Co. from St. Charles Co., Maryland. So I believe that William Toliver Turner's parents also migrated from St. Charles Co. Md. The middle name of William T. Turner is Toliver. I know that Toliver belongs to one of Virginia families, not of Maryland families. Jean Boutcher [email protected]
My brick wall is Isaac TURNER b May 1788 Paris, FR came to US c 1792 d 1867 Wayne Co., PA. The family name was de la TOURNEUR (var. sp.). The only information I have on him is he enlisted in the War/1812 in Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., NY. He then disappears until he 'arrives' in Wayne Co. in 1848 when he married Nancy KELL(E)Y. They had 8 children - married into the Depew and Bird families. In a newspaper interview with one of his daughters, she gave the information re her father's date and place of birth and when he came to US. I have no info at all on Isaac's parentage or siblings. Family lore says he 'came from the West' to PA and was married at least once before he married Nancy. I believe he had a son John who lived next door to Isaac/Nancy in the 1850 census in Wayne Co., PA. The name MILTON was given to several sons in those early years. The family was also prone to TWINS. Anyone missing a grandfather Isaac??? Diane * * * * * * ~ ~ ~ ~ Please check our Home Page ~ ~ ~ ~ * * * * * * http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/a/n/d/Sharon-D-Andreasen/
There are two counties in Maryland that you could be talking about. One is ST. Mary's County and the other is just plain Charles County, Maryland. Charles County is just across the Potomac from Virginia and a lot of the people migrated across the Potomac to Fauquier, Warren, and Rappahannock. My great great great grandmother Sophia Turner born about 1782 came from Maryland which she listed being born , in the 1860 Warren County census. I can not find if she was not orginally a Turner or married a Turner. Same with an Eliza Turner living with her in 1860. Eliza has two son Henry 19 and William 13. Eliza's other daughter Mildred married Thomas Fox and on her death certificate she listed her mother's maiden name as Howard. No record can be found of that either. Since my Turner's were from Warren county Virginia I wonder if there is some kind of connection. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 1:24 PM Subject: [TURNER] William Toliver Turner >I am searching for the parents of William Toliver Turner. > He was born in VA.
